Messi calls for search to continue for missing Sala

BARCELONA • Lionel Messi on Friday urged investigators to resume the search for missing striker Emiliano Sala, after police called off rescue operations and admitted the chances of finding him were "extremely remote".
Police from Guernsey abandoned the search on Thursday, after the light aircraft taking the Argentinian to Wales following his signing with Cardiff from Ligue 1 side Nantes disappeared from radar near the British island on Monday.
"While there is the possibility, a shred of hope, we ask that you please #NoDejenDeBuscar (don't stop searching) for Emiliano. All my strength to your family and friends," said the Barcelona striker on Instagram, with the hashtag #PRAYFORSALA.
His plea comes after Sala's father and other players, including Manchester City's Sergio Aguero, begged authorities to continue.
Sala's family have also asked Nantes not to commemorate the 28-year-old at today's French Cup clash with third-tier Entente Sannois Saint-Gratien.
"We ask you to respect the family who absolutely refuse to talk about mourning and ask us to keep believing," Nantes captain Valentin Rongier told more than 300 fans who attended an open training session on Thursday.
"It is for this reason that we are not going to have a minute's silence or a minute's applause because we still have hope."
Sala's sister, Romina, also vowed that she would never stop looking for her brother, before thanking Messi for his support.
She told a press conference in Cardiff on Friday: "He is a fighter. All he wanted was to play football and fulfil his dream. We are not going to stop looking, we are never going to stop."

Football: Klopp says he is a 'world-record holder' at winning semi-finals, as he laughs off 'unlucky' tag

MADRID (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp laughed off suggestions he is an unlucky manager as he looks to halt an unfortunate run of ending up on the losing side in his last six finals as a coach when he leads Liverpool into Saturday's Champions League decider.
"Since 2012, apart from 2017, I was every year with my team in a final, so we are getting there sometimes with luck in some moments, but most of the time because we had to go there," Klopp told reporters at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, where Liverpool will face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday (June 1).
"I am probably at the moment a world-record holder, in the last seven years at least, in winning semi-finals, but if I wrote a book about that probably nobody would buy it."
This is the seventh final Klopp has taken a team to since leading his brilliant Borussia Dortmund side to a German league and cup double in 2012.
He lost the 2013 Champions League final with Dortmund and the German Cup final in each of the following two campaigns.
Klopp then lost the Europa League and League Cup finals in his first season with Liverpool, before being defeated in the 2018 Champions League final by Real Madrid.
Liverpool also finished second to Manchester City in this season's Premier League despite losing just one game and amassing 97 points. But the German insists it cannot all be about him.

"I'm a normal human being, and if I would now sit in a room and think it's all about me, I am the reason, if I would see myself as a loser or whatever, then that would be a problem. But I don't see it like this."
Klopp, 51, added: "The things that happened in the past, for me I still got confidence I can take out of that, and could always, so it's all good.
"Now I understand luck - if you work for it, you have it from time to time, not always... but apart from that, no, it was not an unlucky career and it's not over, I have still a few years!"

Football: Guardiola dismisses Klopp's claim that Man City have no weaknesses

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Pep Guardiola on Friday (Dec 21) dismissed Jurgen Klopp's suggestion that Manchester City are a team with no sign of weakness as the two battle for the Premier League title.
Guardiola's City and Klopp's Liverpool appear increasingly to be the two main contenders in the title race, as the season approaches its halfway point.
With few slip-ups from either side, their meeting at the Etihad Stadium on Jan 3 looks a potentially significant moment in the battle for first place - a position held by unbeaten Liverpool going into the weekend's fixtures.
Yet Klopp claimed this week that the only team that can stop Guardiola's men from defending their title are City themselves.
Guardiola, though, says his team are fallible and can point to the fact that they lost their season's unbeaten league record at Chelsea this month as proof.
"Any team has strong points and weak points," said the City manager.
"Of course we have weaknesses. We are working on it, but that's normal. These kind of comments have to be put in perspective."
Guardiola's side, who are at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday, were a point off the top of the table before Liverpool went to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday.
Palace are 15th in the Premier League and have collected just one point from their past six away matches. Yet they have started to climb away from the relegation zone after home wins over Burnley and Leicester.
Palace have lost on all their seven visits to the Etihad and have suffered defeat in each of their past nine away games against City, a run going back to the days of Maine Road.

ATTACKING THREAT

Palace, though, did end City's run of 18 consecutive league wins on Dec 31 last season with a 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park, and might have won had goalkeeper Ederson not saved an injury-time penalty from Luka Milivojevic.
Roy Hodgson's side deserved he goalless draw they earned on their previous visit to Manchester, against United at Old Trafford on Nov 24, and Guardiola is wary of players such as Wilfried Zaha, Max Meyer, Andros Townsend and Milivojevic.
"They have quality players in Zaha, Townsend, Meyer, Milivojevic," he said.
"They have an incredible experienced manager. I saw the game against Chelsea (on Nov 4, when Palace lost 3-1), and it was so difficult to attack them.
"After winning 18 games in a row, you have to draw once eventually, that's normal. We played decent in the first half that day. But in the second half they were much better and missed a penalty.
"Palace bring worries because of the qualities they have. They know what they have to do. Maybe people expect better results from them than they got but in every game they have more chances.
"Winning against them is complicated, and tomorrow it will happen like this (and be difficult for us) if we are not completely focused."
Playmaker David Silva is back in training as he recovers from the hamstring injury he suffered against Chelsea but will not be available to face Palace.
Centre-back Vincent Kompany will be absent with a muscular problem but Kevin De Bruyne could make his first league start of the season, having played and scored in Wednesday's League Cup win at Leicester after recovering from two knee injuries.
Sergio Aguero, who started the Leicester match after coming back from a groin problem, will compete for a place in attack with Gabriel Jesus.

Football: Premier League voices fears over proposed Champions League reforms

Football: Premier League voices fears over proposed Champions League reforms

LONDON (AFP) - The Premier League voiced "significant concerns" over potential reforms to the Champions League on Friday (April 5), saying the changes would damage the thriving domestic game.
Reported reforms being put forward for further discussion include changing the current group stage from eight groups of four to four groups of eight, guaranteeing clubs far more Champions League games from 2024.
A tiered system involving relegation and promotion could see the top six teams of each group automatically qualify for the following year's competition rather than through their domestic leagues, while Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin denied reports games could be played at weekends.
"All 20 Premier League clubs today discussed their 'significant concerns' regarding reported proposals for changing the format and qualification criteria of Uefa club competitions from season 2024/25," the Premier League said in a statement.
"All clubs unanimously agreed it is inappropriate for European football bodies to create plans that would alter the structures, calendar and competitiveness of the domestic game and will work together to protect the Premier League."
The Premier League is one of the most competitive domestic competitions with its top six of Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham fighting for just four places in the Champions League every season.
All six are still involved in European competition this season, with City, United, Liverpool and Tottenham in next week's Champions League quarter-finals, and Arsenal and Chelsea in the Europa League last eight.

OPPOSITION

However, it is believed leading clubs on the continent are seeking change to combat the Premier League's advantage over its European competitors from more lucrative TV rights deals.
"In England, football plays an important role in our culture and everyday life," the statement added.
"Millions of fans attend matches across the country, with allegiances and local rivalries often passed down through generations. We have a fantastic combination of competitive football and committed fans that we will vigorously defend."
The Premier League are not alone in standing up to the proposals, with senior officials in the Spanish and German leagues also stating their disapproval.
On Friday Lars-Christer Olsson, the president of the European Leagues body which represents domestic competitions across the continent, said that there was "unanimous" opposition to the reforms.
"Our major objective is to safeguard the domestic competitions and protect them," Olsson said at the organisation's annual general meeting in Lisbon.
"We have decided to invite all club members of our leagues to a meeting in Madrid on May 6-7, to discuss how they would like to see the development of professional club football in Europe."
On Wednesday multiple sources told AFP that Ceferin and Olsson would meet on May 8 to discuss the proposed changes that were reportedly put to Uefa last month by Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli, head of the European Club Association (ECA) which represents the continent's biggest teams.
The reforms are also set to be discussed by Uefa's Club Competitions Committee on May 14.

BARCELONA (REUTERS) - Spanish LaLiga's organising body has said it does not expect president Javier Tebas to jump ship to the Premier League, responding to British media reports that the Spaniard has emerged as a candidate to become the English top flight's chief executive.
"We are not aware of this supposed interest. That said, if a competition as important as the Premier League is taking note of the work being done by LaLiga, including its president, clubs and employees, it is a source of pride for the entire organisation," a LaLiga spokesman said on Wednesday (Feb 20).
"Javier has a contract with LaLiga and not only is he happy here, he also has responsibilities and challenges which occupy his full attention. This includes the changing broadcast landscape and battling the threat of new competitions - including format changes that put domestic leagues at risk."
The Premier League has struggled to find a successor to long-serving chief executive Richard Scudamore, who stepped down last December after 19 years with the organisation.
Susanna Dinnage, a senior executive at media organisation Discovery, was named as the new chief executive last November but later announced she would not be taking up the role.
Tebas, 56, made headlines by pledging last August to play one LaLiga game per season overseas, although a bid to stage Girona's game against Barcelona in Miami last month fell through after Barca withdrew from it, citing a lack of consensus.

Football: 'Pray for no rain' as Manchester City return to China after Beijing debacle

SHANGHAI (AFP) - Manchester City will return to China this year for the first time since their ill-fated visit of 2016, when a game with cross-town rivals United was called off at the last minute.
The first overseas Manchester derby was cancelled just hours before kick-off because of an unplayable surface at Beijing's "Bird's Nest" stadium following heavy rain.
Pep Guardiola's City will hope there is no repeat when they compete in the 2019 Premier League Asia Trophy, which will be held in Nanjing on July 17 and nearby Shanghai on July 20.
The other teams will be Newcastle United, West Ham United and Chinese-owned Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Premier League said on Tuesday (March 26).
Each side will play two games in the mini tournament, which is likely to be testing for the players with peak temperatures over 30 deg C and the possibility of torrential rain.
The Asia Trophy was similarly dogged by pitch problems - again after rain - when it was held in Hong Kong in 2013.
Then-Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio labelled the muddy surface "a killer pitch" and Tottenham Hotspur's Jan Vertonghen suffered an ankle injury on the waterlogged surface.
While uncomfortable conditions for players and disruptive to managers' pre-season preparations, the Premier League and clubs see such trips as a prime opportunity to grow their fan bases in China, the world's second-biggest economy.
City recently purchased a stake in Chinese third-tier club Sichuan Jiuniu as part of their overseas expansion drive.

"In Manchester City we have the reigning Premier League champions competing for the trophy," the league's interim chief executive Richard Masters said when naming the July line-up.
"I have no doubt the fans can expect some competitive and thrilling Premier League action."
A glut of European football clubs look set to visit China in pre-season, with Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur also committed to coming.

Football: Tampines Rovers sneak past Yangon United 4-3 to top AFC Cup Group F

SINGAPORE - Tampines Rovers needed a three-goal salvo in the dying minutes in their last AFC Cup Group F match against Cambodia's Nagaworld FC to secure a 4-2 victory.
On Wednesday night (May 1), the Singapore Premier League side endured another "crazy" AFC Cup game as they lost the lead twice but still ended up beating Yangon United 4-3 at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
Stags striker Khairul Amri missed a host of chances but went home with the match ball after notching a hat-trick in the second, 43rd and 77th minute.
But even his hat-trick was not enough to seal the win as Yangon capitalised on sloppy defending to come back from 2-0 and 3-2 down in an end-to-end second half with goals from Soe Min Naing (58th), Maung Maung Lwin (71st) and Kyaw Zin Oo (85th).
The visitors, clearly fired up by a sizeable Myanmarese contingent among the 1,827 fans, could have even snuck ahead in the 87th minute, but Tampines goalkeeper Syazwan Buhari did well to deny Kosuke Yamazaki.
That allowed Tampines full-back Irwan Shah to steal the show and three points in the 91st minute as he latched onto Madhu Mohana's flick-on to lash past Wai Lin Aung for his fourth goal of the season.
With four wins and a draw, Tampines lead Group F with 13 points and need a draw at Ha Noi on May 15 to be sure of making the Asean Zonal semi-finals.
They may also qualify as the best runners-up from the three Asean groups, but Tampines coach Kadir Yahaya wants his team to improve on their defending if they are to go far in the competition.
He said: "Like the last game against Nagaworld, after we scored the first goal, we dropped a gear.
"Maybe that was due to confidence, but we kept trying and had chances to kill off the game which we didn't make full use of.
"We entertained the fans but, from a coach's perspective, we made individual errors that we need to correct in order to go further.
"We have been conceding in the last five to 10 minutes, which is quite worrying. If we played a stronger team today, they would have killed us."
Amri also felt the need to improve at the other end, saying added: "It was a crazy game. i missed a lot of chances and let my team down and they had to fight until the final whistle.
"I'm happy to contribute three goals, but it was almost not enough and I should have scored four or five. We will need to be sharper in the upcoming games."

Football: China all but confirmed as 2023 Asian Cup hosts after South Korea withdraws

(Reuters) - China was all but confirmed as the host nation of the next Asian Cup tournament in 2023 after the only other bidders South Korea withdrew from the process.
The Korean Football Association (KFA) notified the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) of their intention to withdraw in a letter on Wednesday (May 15), paving the way for China to host the tournament for the second time.
The world's most populous nation last hosted the continental championship in 2004, when they lost the final 3-1 to Japan in Beijing.
"We need to make a choice between the 2023 AFC Asian Cup and the Women's World Cup," KFA secretary general Chun Hanjin said in a statement on the organisation's website.
"We decided to focus on the Women's World Cup strategically.
"In case of the Women's World Cup, Fifa and the government will actively support the joint hosting of the two Koreas."
The KFA in March announced a joint bid with North Korea to host the 2023 Women's World Cup. Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa have also expressed interest.
The AFC are scheduled to announce the 2023 Asian Cup hosts on June 4.
Qatar, the hosts of the next World Cup in 2022, won their first Asian Cup title earlier this year with a 3-1 victory over Japan in the United Arab Emirates.

Football: Mohamed Salah retains African award to seal great day for Egypt

DAKAR (AFP) - Mohamed Salah completed a memorable day for Egyptian football by retaining his African Player of the Year title in Senegal on Tuesday (Jan 8).
The 26-year-old Liverpool star finished first with club-mate Senegalese Sadio Mane and Arsenal and Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang the other finalists.
It was an identical outcome to last year when Salah became only the second Egyptian after 1983 winner Mahmoud al Khatib to be voted the best footballer in Africa.
Egypt crushed sole rivals South Africa 16-1 earlier on Tuesday in a CAF executive committee vote in Dakar to decide which country succeeded Cameroon as 2019 Cup of Nations hosts.
Delays to preparations and concerns about security resulted in the central African nation being replaced as hosts, and they will stage the 2021 tournament instead.
While the 15-vote winning margin for Egypt was unexpected, the success of Salah was anticipated as he continues to score regularly for the English Premier League leaders.
Salah netted 44 goals in all competitions for Liverpool last season - his first with the Anfield club - and has bagged 13 Premier League goals so far this season.
Ironically, Aubameyang has scored one league goal more than Salah, topping the charts with Tottenham Hotspur and England star Harry Kane on 14.
Salah was born in a northern Egyptian town Nagrig and used to make eight-hour return trips on buses to train with Cairo-based El Mokawloon (Arab Contractors).
Spotted by scouts from Swiss club Basel, he moved there in 2012 before joining Premier League giants Chelsea two years later.
Salah found scoring difficult early in his professional career and was nicknamed "chancentod" (chance killer) by the Swiss media.

OFF-TARGET

Later, playing for Chelsea in a League Cup tie, the Egyptian was so off-target with a goal attempt that the ball trickled over the touchline for a throw-in.
Unhappy with his two-goal return, Chelsea lent Salah to Italian outfits Fiorentina and Roma, then sold him to the latter club.
Salah blossomed in Rome, averaging close to a goal every two matches, and Liverpool paid almost £37 million (S$64 million) to sign him two years ago.
The Egyptian had his share of setbacks last year, too, with an injury in the Champions League final loss to Real Madrid also keeping him out of a World Cup defeat by Uruguay.
He returned to score against hosts Russia and Saudi Arabia, but the Pharaohs exited their first appearance at the global showpiece in 28 years without securing even one point.
Salah netted twice and missed two penalties three months later in a 6-0 Cup of Nations rout of Niger and snatched the late winner in a 3-2 victory over Tunisia in the same competition.
Having defended his Player of the Year title, his next goal will be to match the four straight wins in the competition by former Manchester City and Ivory Coast star Yaya Toure.
The other male awards went to France-born Morocco coach Herve Renard, the Mauritania national team, and Moroccan Achraf Hakimi in the youth category.
South African Chrestinah Kgatlana was voted Women's Player of the Year and South Africa coach Desiree Ellis and the Nigeria national team were the other female winners.
The Goal of the Year award also went to Kgatlana.

Football: Liverpool stun Barcelona 4-0 in second leg to reach Champions League final with 4-3 aggregate win

Football: Liverpool stun Barcelona 4-0 in second leg to reach Champions League final with 4-3 aggregate win

LIVERPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Liverpool produced one of the greatest comebacks in Champions League history to beat Barcelona 4-0 on Tuesday (May 7), overturning a three-goal first-leg deficit and advancing to their second successive final with a 4-3 aggregate victory.
Two goals each from stand-in forward Divock Origi and halftime substitute Georginio Wijnaldum left Lionel Messi and Barcelona utterly shell-shocked after a Liverpool performance full of passion, belief and determination.
Juergen Klopp's side will play the winner of Wednesday's other semi-final between Ajax Amsterdam and Tottenham Hotspur, with the Dutch side leading 1-0 from the first leg in London.
"It was overwhelming. I would say it's impossible," said Klopp, amid wild celebrations at the final whistle when his team stood in front of their famous Kop stand to sing You'll Never Walk Alone with fans.
"Playing against the best team in the world. Winning with a clean sheet, I don't know how the boys did it. It's unbelievable," added the German.
"I saw James Milner crying after the game on the pitch. It means so much to all of us. There are more important things in the world but creating this emotional atmosphere together is so special."
Liverpool became only the third team in the history of the European Cup or Champions League to come from three goals down after the first leg of a semi-final and progress after Panathinaikos in 1970-71 and Barcelona themselves in 1985-86.
It was a night that will be remembered by Liverpool fans alongside their fifth European Cup win in Istanbul in 2005, when they came back from 3-0 down at halftime to win on penalties.
For Barca, who went out on away goals to AS Roma in the quarter-finals last year, after winning the first-leg 4-1, it was a bitter occasion that will raise many questions for coach Ernesto Valverde.

MESSI SUBDUED

Messi, whose two goals in the first leg had given his team a seemingly comfortable advantage, was unable to influence the game with an away goal that would have been decisive.
The scoreline was remarkable enough in itself, but the fact that Liverpool overcame five-times European champions Barcelona without two thirds of their usual strike force made it extraordinary.

With inspirational Egyptian Mohamed Salah and key Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino injured, Juergen Klopp had to play Belgian reserve Origi alongside Sadio Mane, with Swiss attacking midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri also given a rare start.
Klopp had said before the game that he wanted his side to "fail in the most beautiful way" if they were to go out of the Champions League Yet the Anfield crowd wanted glory - they roared their team on to the field and greeted Barcelona, especially their former Liverpool players Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho, with boos.
The Liverpool players responded, taking the game to Barca and then grabbing a seventh-minute lead when a poor headed clearance from Jordi Alba fell at the feet of Jordan Henderson, who burst goalwards.
His low shot was parried out by Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen but straight to Origi who slotted home.

QUICKLY-TAKEN CORNER

Barca had openings in the first half but when Messi twice got space around the box he fired wide of the target and when Jordi Alba burst through just before halftime, Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker was out quickly to nullify the danger.
Yet the game took a remarkable turn following the introduction at the break of Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum for injured left back Andy Robertson.
The Dutchman drove home a low cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold, which Barca keeper Ter Stegen should have saved, to make it 2-0 in the 54th minute.
Two minutes later Wijnaldum rose to meet a Shaqiri cross with a powerful header to make it 3-3 on aggregate.
Liverpool then grabbed an extraordinary fourth goal with a quickly-taken corner from Alexander-Arnold, catching the Barca defence asleep with a low ball that was turned in at the near post by Origi.
That sent Anfield wild and meant Klopp's side suddenly needed to switch mindset and defend a lead as Barca slipped, belatedly, into their trademark possession game.
Yet with Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip outstanding in the centre of defence and Brazilian Fabinho making some crucial interventions in midfield, Liverpool held on for one of their most famous wins.
Klopp's side, who lost to Real Madrid in last year's final in Kiev, remain in with a chance of a double triumph as they head into Sunday's final round of Premier League games trailing leaders Manchester City by just a point.
After their defeat in Barcelona, Sunday was expected to be the conclusion of a Liverpool season that promised so much but would ultimately conclude with Klopp's side finishing empty-handed.
Now their campaign has been extended until the June 1 final in Madrid where they will have a chance of a sixth European Cup - which would move them above Barca on the all-time winners list.

Neville wants his Lionesses to be ruthless

NICE (France) • England coach Phil Neville believes his players have "nothing to fear" after beginning their women's World Cup quest on Sunday with a narrow 2-1 win over Scotland, in which a convincing first half was slightly undermined by a less than ruthless second.
Nikita Parris converted from the spot after a Video Assistant Referee review to give the Lionesses the lead and Ellen White added another before half-time.
While Scotland fought back in the second half, with Claire Emslie reducing the arrears, they could not find an equaliser against one of the tournament's favourites.
Revealing he was "really proud" of his team's efforts, Neville said: "It was good to get that game out of the way. It was always going to be emotional and was really hot. We played really well in the first half... started off playing very adventurously.
"When our legs got heavy in the second half, though, we let fatigue get the better of us. We have to keep driving standards higher and being ruthless but I loved every minute."
Having never been named in a World Cup squad as an England player, Neville was always going to enjoy the moment and had no objections with suggestions that the opening goal was harsh on Scotland.
The new rules allow no scope for a referee's discretion even if the offence lacked intent, with Scotland coach Shelley Kerr admitting, while it was "harsh" that Nicola Docherty was penalised after Fran Kirby's cross had flicked off her partially outstretched arm, that "by the letter of the law, it was a penalty".
Neville also reserved special praise for forward Parris, challenging her to take on even more on-pitch responsibilities as "she is someone with another 10 per cent still left in her".
But he urged the players to raise their game if England are to improve on their third-place finish in the 2015 edition and win their maiden world title.
The former Manchester United defender added: "They're a good set of players with good quality and when I see how they play like they did for the first 60 minutes, we are a good team which will progress in the competition.
"But if we drop our levels it will be tougher. We want to be here for the next 27 days."

Football: 'Super difficult' for Neymar to be fit to face Manchester United, says Thomas Tuchel

PARIS (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain coach Thomas Tuchel has admitted Neymar is unlikely to be fit in time for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Manchester United.
"It's going to be super difficult", Tuchel told Canal+ when asked if Neymar would return from a metatarsal injury in time for the game at Old Trafford on Feb 12.
"It is still too early to talk about a return date because we need to wait and see how 'Ney' reacts to treatment to be more precise," he said after PSG beat Rennes 4-1 at the Parc des Princes.
Tuchel's admission came after newspaper Le Parisien claimed on Sunday evening (Jan 27) that Neymar had suffered "a hairline fracture of the fifth metatarsal", exactly where the Brazilian underwent an operation on a fracture in March last year.
Neymar missed the last three months of last season as a result, including the second leg of PSG's Champions League last-16 defeat against Real Madrid. He only returned just in time for the World Cup.
"I can't confirm a new diagnosis. I think the club has said everything about this injury for the moment and now we need to wait," Tuchel added.
PSG have only said that Neymar had suffered "a painful reactivation of the right fifth metatarsal" in Wednesday's French Cup win against Strasbourg.
Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar is expected to visit the world's most expensive player on Monday.
The second leg of the Manchester United tie is scheduled for March 6.

SINGAPORE - His team were crying out for a saviour in Oslo, Norway, on Sunday night (May 12) and Ikhsan Fandi delivered.

He told The Straits Times: “I’m shocked because I  never  expected my first competitive goal to come from a bicycle kick. It feels even more amazing when it’s the match-winner. This may be just one goal, but this is not just for me.
“It’s for my family and all the people in Singapore supporting me. I will keep working hard to earn more playing time and try to score more goals.”
The 3-2 away win extended Raufoss’ unbeaten league run to four games, and propelled the second-tier Norwegian side to fourth place on 13 points after seven games.
They trail Aalesund (16 points), Sandefjord (15) and Start (13 and better goal difference) in the 16-team 1. Division. The top two teams earn automatic promotion while third to sixth enter the play-off for the last slot.
Raufoss coach Christian Johnsen said: “It was about time, regardless of the result, to let him play. Today, he was really good when he came in.
“He has many of the qualities – speed and physicality – and he is also a nice and humble lad who works hard, so we know he has great potential.
“However, in football, it is all about being in shape, and he’s starting to get there now.”

While Ikhsan had scored for Raufoss in pre-season friendlies, his acrobatic winner was his first goal in a competitive fixture.
It is the first time in 30 years a Singaporean has scored a senior goal for a professional European football club since V. Sundram Moorthy netted the last of his three goals for Swiss side FC Basel in 1989.
Ikhsan’s father, Fandi Ahmad, was the only other Singaporean to accomplish the feat with 11 league goals for Dutch team Groningen from 1983 to 1985.
Remarkably, Ikhsan’s goal comes after just 92 minutes of league action. Even though he has played in the last six league matches, they were all substitute appearances.

Fandi told The Straits Times: "I'm happy for him. He has been wanting to show what he can do, and he injected life into his team when they were down.
"I told him the coach (Christian Johnsen) has faith in him, and that's why he has been getting playing time. Even though it is not easy coming on late in the game - if they are winning, has has to do more pressing and defending - he must be patient because he will get his chance.
"Overall, we have been getting positive feedback. In a new environment, he has adapted well. He just needs to be confident because he can do better. It is good for him to learn like this, and he must not underestimate his own talent."
Ikhsan's older brother Irfan, 21, is also flourishing with Thai League 2 side BG Pathum United.
With 31 points from 12 games, BG Pathum are top of the table and on track for a swift return to the top tier.
And the Singapore international defender has played his part with six clean sheets, three goals and two Man-of-the-Match awards.
Irfan said: "T2 is not a league to be looked down upon because it is physically very tough and players also have to be mentally strong.
"It has been a good experience playing alongside very experienced and talented footballers.
"Being only 21 and entrusted with a key role, I feel I have a huge responsibility in defence, but we have worked well as a team to get to where we are at the moment.
"We have had to play one league and one cup game in a week recently, so it can take its toll and proper recovery is very important. I hope my team stay healthy and fit so we can fight for promotion and silverware."
Fandi said: "Irfan is doing very well in Thailand and their technical director Surachai Jaturapattarapong is very happy with how he is commanding their defence.
"Like I have been saying, I hope more of our footballers venture overseas and improve from playing in a strong league because that can only be good for the national team."

DHAKA (REUTERS) - A lawyer for Fifa council member Mahfuza Akhter Kiron is set to file a petition in a Bangladesh court on Tuesday (March 19) seeking bail for the official who has been arrested in a defamation case following her criticism of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Mahfuza courted trouble after her remarks in a news conference last month in which she said Ms Hasina was neglecting football in the cricket-obsessed country.
A sport organiser filed a defamation case against the 52-year-old, who was arrested on Saturday.
"Hopefully, we'll file a bail petition tomorrow," her lawyer, Liakat Hossain, told Reuters on Monday.
The lawyer said Mahfuza was denied bail on Saturday but he argued that an "established woman" who represented the country abroad should be granted bail.
"We will file a bail petition again."
Ms Hasina's administration has recently been accused of cracking down on free speech and adopting an increasingly authoritarian style.
Her government, which won a third straight term in a Dec 30 election marred by violence and allegations of widespread rigging, denies freedom of speech is under attack in the country of 165 million people.
Abul Hasan Chowdhury Prince, who filed the case against Mahfuza, said her comments against Ms Hasina were derogatory.
"I lodged the case as she made derogatory remarks against our sports-loving prime minister," he told Reuters.

Football: Man City look like world's best side but Liverpool will fight till the end, Klopp stresses

(REUTERS) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said English Premier League title rivals Manchester City are currently the best team in the world but there is no guarantee Pep Guardiola's side will finish the season with an unprecedented quadruple.
With the League Cup already in the bag, City are a point clear of Liverpool at the top of the league, and have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League and the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
"City look like the best team in the world, that's how it is," Klopp told reporters.
"Barcelona struggled a little bit (against Villarreal on Tuesday) but still did the job. Juve look pretty impressive in Italy but you don't exactly know how it will be in the Champions League if Cristiano Ronaldo cannot do it.
"And you think, OK, City look a bit more stable than all of them. But that doesn't mean they will win all their games."
While the focus has been on City seeking a clean sweep of silverware, the prospect of Liverpool themselves completing a Premier League and Champions League double seems to have slipped under the radar.
Klopp, however, does not expect his players to take their foot off the gas until the end of the campaign.

"I'm just interested in our games and we cannot do more than win our games," the German added.
"We knew pretty quick Southampton was the next challenge, then Porto, then Chelsea, then Porto again. There is a lot to come and the only thing I can say is that we try everything to be really ready for that fight."
Liverpool visit Southampton in the league later on Friday (April 5) before City meet Brighton in the FA Cup semi-finals on Saturday.

Football: Spurs back up to second after 3-0 win at Cardiff

CARDIFF, United Kingdom (REUTERS) - Tottenham moved back into second place in the Premier League, six points behind leaders Liverpool, after cruising to a 3-0 win at lowly Cardiff City on Tuesday (Jan 1).
Liverpool face third-placed Manchester City on Thursday night, and City could move back above Spurs if they avoid defeat at the Etihad Stadium.
Spurs, beaten by Wolves at home on Saturday, took just three minutes to get in front in South Wales through the familiar source of captain Harry Kane.
After Kane launched an attack, surging from deep, Kieran Trippier crossed and the England forward had a simple tap-in when the ball ricocheted off Cardiff defender Sean Morrison.
Cardiff manager Neil Warnock said that early goal was a heavy blow: "When we start off like that we shoot ourselves in the foot. All the planning goes out of the window," he told the BBC.
Christian Eriksen then made it 2-0 for Spurs nine minutes later with a clever finish from the edge of the box, although Warnock will be disappointed with the way his defenders backed off and gave the Dane space to wriggle and shoot home.
The game was effectively over in the 26th minute when Son Heung-Min produced a clinical finish with a shot on the turn after being well set-up by Kane. The South Korean has scored 11 goals in his last 12 starts.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino praised the way his side seized control of the game early.
"The energy we showed from the beginning was fantastic to dominate the game. We knew that it would be difficult to open the score and we wanted from the beginning to have a high tempo. We found the solution in the first 20 minutes," he told Sky Sports.
"I don't want to see the table. Of course we are in a good position. We need to be consistent. You must be consistent during the whole season," he said.
Pochettino added that he wouldn't let nervousness over the table prevent him from watching Thursday's clash between City and Liverpool, the league's highest-scoring sides.
"I don't care. Of course I will watch, it will be an unbelievable game and I enjoy football," he said.
For his part Warnock suggested that Cardiff, who remain in 16th place three points above the relegation zone, may need to go shopping during the January transfer window.
"Hopefully we can get one or two additions which will help," he said.
