'Expired' Molde deal to ease way for Solskjaer

LONDON • Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said that his contract at Norwegian club Molde may have expired, paving the way for him to take charge permanently at Old Trafford at the end of the season.
He was loaned to the English Premier League club by Molde after Jose Mourinho was sacked in December.
The former United striker has guided the team to an impressive run of form, with the Red Devils still undefeated in domestic competition under his charge.
He had said previously that Molde's owners would support him if he decides to stay at United.
"I'm not sure how it works. I think the contract has expired and that now I only have a contract with Manchester United," Solskjaer, 46, said on Norway's Fotballklubben podcast. "There may have to be another contract (for me to return to Molde)."
The British media reported on Tuesday that Molde had taken down a statement on their website saying he had signed a new three-year deal with them before his switch to United.
However, Molde chief executive Oystein Neerland said yesterday that he expects Solskjaer to return to the club after his stint with United.

"Before Christmas we signed a new agreement with Ole Gunnar for three years, until the end of the 2021 season," Sky Sports quoted him as telling broadcaster TV2 Norway. "He is now employed at United, and plans to return to Molde after the season."
Solskjaer is reportedly the front runner to be appointed United manager on a full-time basis, ahead of Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino.
Spain international Ander Herrera became the latest player to back the Norwegian.
"If I was sporting director of a club, I'd sign Ole," he told FourFourTwo magazine ahead of yesterday's Champions League last-16 second leg at Paris Saint-Germain.
"Ole has a quality that's difficult to have in football, which is to have the affection of all the players."
Solskjaer also said last Friday that he has featured in a promotional video for United supporters to buy season tickets for the 2019-20 season - another indication that the role as Mourinho's permanent successor could be his. "It's not strange doing it (the video), it will be stranger to see yourself in the video if you're not here," he said.

Football: PSG buy Argentina midfielder Paredes for estimated 47m before Man United clash

PARIS (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain have completed the signing of Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes on a four-and-a-half-year deal, the French football champions announced on Tuesday (Jan 29).
The 25-year-old put pen to paper on a contract until 2023 after completing a medical in Qatar. No transfer fee was disclosed, although press reports have put the fee at €47 million (S$72.7 million) from Russian team Zenit Saint Petersburg.
"Leandro's arrival will keep the momentum, both on the pitch and among our supporters, ahead of the major events coming up. Exciting times lie ahead," PSG's Qatari president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said in a club statement.
The Ligue 1 leaders were looking to strengthen their midfield ahead of their Champions League last-16 tie against Manchester United, with Marco Verratti sidelined with an ankle injury and Adrien Rabiot frozen out after refusing to sign a new contract.
PSG go to Old Trafford in the first leg of that tie on Feb 12, and they are currently sweating on the fitness of Neymar, who suffered a metatarsal injury last week.
Paredes, who has won nine caps but was not part of Argentina's squad at last year's World Cup, previously played for Boca Juniors and Roma. He moved to Zenit in 2017.

Football: France make light work of South Korea in World Cup opener

PARIS (REUTERS) - A rampant France smashed South Korea out of sight on Friday (June 7) to open their women's soccer World Cup campaign in irrepressible style with a 4-0 victory that sent a warning to all other teams with a design on the trophy.
It was one-way traffic all night in a packed 45,000-seater Parc des Princes as the French launched wave after wave of attack at the hapless Koreans, running out easy winners to stamp their authority on Group A of the FIFA extravaganza.
France skipper Amandine Henry controlled the midfield with a firm grip and deft touch, while strikers Eugenie Le Sommer and Delphine Cascarino were constant threats.
From the very first minutes South Korea struggled to get out of their own half and Le Sommer set the tone after nine minutes when she slammed a shot past Korean keeper Kim Min-jung into the roof of the net to send the stadium into raptures.
France had all the play, and thought they had doubled their lead after 27 minutes when Griedge Mbock Bathy slammed a volley home, only for the video assistant referee to rule it out for offside two minutes later.
Wendie Renard made amends after 35 minutes, the powerful central defender thumping a header home for her 21st international goal. She added another headed goal to make it 3-0 on the stroke of halftime of what was rapidly becoming a non-contest.
The Koreans were being outclassed in every department, and trudged off at the break having barely ventured out of their own half.
Korea desperately scrambled to keep the French at bay - just - and with the result in no doubt French coach Corinne Diacre looked to preserve some of her star names for later action, taking Cascarino off in the 70th minute, replacing her with Valerie Gauvin; and replacing Amel Majri with fellow defender Eve Perisset four minutes later.
Just as the Koreans thought they had somehow kept the French at bay for the second period, Henry added to the tally, slamming a right foot shot curling into the Korean net from the edge of the area for 4-0 and a fitting finale.

Football: Solskjaer makes dream start as Man United thrash Cardiff

CARDIFF, United Kingdom (REUTERS) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer enjoyed a dream start as Manchester United's interim manager as his side turned on the style to thrash his former club Cardiff City 5-1 in the Premier League on Saturday (Dec 22).
Goals from Marcus Rashford, Ander Herrera, Anthony Martial and two from Jesse Lingard gave United an emphatic and a much-needed victory in the Norweigan's first game in charge.
It was the first time United had scored five since Alex Ferguson's last game in charge in May 2013.
Solskjaer, handed control after this week's sacking of Jose Mourinho, spent a miserable nine months at Cardiff in 2014, getting them relegated from the top-flight.
However, he was quickly celebrating on his return to the Welsh capital when Rashford scored with a fiercely-struck free kick from distance after three minutes.
United doubled their lead before the half hour mark. Herrera was given time to unleash a right-footed shot from about 25 yards out which deflected off the head of Greg Cunningham and over the hand of goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.
Cardiff got a lifeline before halftime, however, after Rashford gave away a penalty for handball and Victor Camarasa sent the spot kick into the top left corner for only his second goal of the season.
Two minutes later, Martial started and finished a brilliant quick passing move to weave into the box and restore United's two goal cushion.

After the break, Cardiff defender Sol Bamba clumsily took down Lingard in the box and the forward got back to his feet to put resulting spot kick to Etheridge's right.
Another quick passing move from United set up Lingard to round the keeper and score in the 90th minute to put the seal on an emphatic win.
The result and the manner of United's play, with Paul Pogba restored to the lineup, lifted the mood after United's worst start for 28 years. They moved back up to sixth having briefly been displaced by Watford.
"Football is easy if you have good players. This is such a great group of players. The quality is just unbelievable," Solskjaer told BT Sport.
"It's been a tough week... it's been loads of things swirling around their heads so the players have responded brilliantly."
Neil Warnock's Cardiff, meanwhile, remain 17th and just two points above the relegation zone.
"I thought we started well, even at 2-1 down I thought we had a chance but it's not a penalty is it, dear me. But you can't blame the referee," Warnock said.
"It's very disappointing, but if you'd have told me at the beginning of the season we wouldn't be in the bottom three at Christmas I would have snapped your hand off. So we've got to take the positives now."

Home United snap Albirex Niigatas title-winning streak

The long trophy streak has, at long last, been broken.
After hoovering up all 11 trophies on offer in the previous three seasons, Albirex Niigata finally tasted defeat when Home United triumphed 5-4 on penalties to lift the Community Shield last night as the new Singapore Premier League (SPL) season kicked off.
The season curtain-raiser, played before 4,626 fans at Jalan Besar Stadium, ended goalless after 90 minutes and no extra time was played.
But it was a new SPL rule that was a talking point for the White Swans, apart from a rare defeat.
For this campaign, the Japanese club have to sign at least four Singaporean players, with at least two of them starting and playing the entire first half.
Against Home, Albirex coach Keiji Shigetomi started with Firas Irwan and Zamani Zamri in wide midfield at the beginning. But both were replaced respectively by Sota Sugiyama and Shuhei Sasahara at the break.

HOME AMBITION
I told the boys from the beginning that we want to go for the title. There will be lots of hard matches and we have to take care of ourselves physically and mentally.
SASWADIMATA DASUKI, Home United coach, hoping to make a bang this season.

The tactician explained: "When we were preparing for this match, it (replacing the two local players at half-time) was already in our plans.
"The two boys are very young, still only 18. They helped to keep the shape (of the team) and worked very hard but, in the second half, I wanted to retain more possession.
"That's why I brought on the Japanese players, who are able to retain the ball better."
With or without the local players, what was noticeable yesterday was a change in Albirex's style.
Swaggering and stylish, they won the SPL after an unprecedented unbeaten campaign that saw them win 21 and draw three of their 24 fixtures last term. Also, apart from their consecutive clean sweeps from 2016 to 2018, Albirex did a double in 2015 by winning the Singapore and League Cups to totally dominate the local scene.
Against Home yesterday, Albirex played more direct balls out of defence, did not press as intensely and the backline struggled with clearing the ball at times.
Shigetomi said: "It was a very difficult game. It was very tight defensively and there's not much space on the pitch."
Home's Hami Syahin was the man who denied the White Swans their space in attack.
An attacking midfielder by vocation, the 20-year-old impressed in a deep-lying role and buzzed all over midfield to recover possession.
In a scrappy first half, chances were few as both sides sized each other up with a series of crunching tackles.
The best chance of the game fell to the Protectors in the 35th minute, but Shahril Ishak was unable to connect with the teasing cross from Iqram Rifqi, with goalkeeper Kengo Fukudome beaten.
Both teams missed two of their first five kicks during the shoot-out.
At the sudden-death stage, it was Hami who scored the decisive attempt after defender Naruki Takahashi's effort rebounded off the bar.
Home's gritty win delighted their new head coach Saswadimata Dasuki, who said: "In terms of effort and commitment, the boys put in a great performance.
"They really want to fight for their places. And we have senior players like Shahril, Juma'at (Jantan) and Izzdin (Shafiq) guiding the youngsters.
"Even at 0-0, we did not panic as we controlled our emotions and tempo.
"I told the boys from the beginning that we want to go for the title. There will be lots of hard matches and we have to take care of ourselves physically and mentally."

Abramovich steps in amid racism outrage
LONDON • Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has requested reports on the club's attempts to clamp down on the fans who sang anti-Semitic songs during the Europa League tie against Vidi in Budapest on Thursday.
The Blues have asked the Hungarian club for close-circuit television footage that they hope will enable them to identify the vocal minority of travelling fans responsible for the chanting, which has disgusted Abramovich and others connected to the club.
Manager Maurizio Sarri has told The Daily Mail he "condemned every form of racism and discrimination". Having experienced it himself while managing in Italy, he also felt it was not just an English problem as "there are some stupid people all over the world".
Midfielder Cesc Fabregas agreed, saying he was happy for the club to be taught a lesson if it led to better behaviour from their supporters.
The Spaniard said: "The focus now is on Chelsea for what happened. Unfortunately, if we look around carefully all over the world, all sports, all football clubs, we will find things like that.
"The people that did it, they will be punished for it and they will be taught a big lesson in their lives. The quicker we get rid of these people, the better. This is not the real face of Chelsea."
Chelsea will issue life bans to any miscreants whom they are able to identify, although that may not be straightforward because the incident took place at an away ground where they do not control the ticketing arrangements.
Abramovich has been kept informed of Chelsea's attempts to combat racist behaviour, which include cooperating with an inquiry by London police into a supporter who allegedly racially abused Raheem Sterling during last Saturday's Premier League game against Manchester City.
The club have since temporarily suspended four people over that incident.
While Abramovich, who is a Russian Jew, has not been to home games this term after being denied a visa to enter the United Kingdom in May, he has followed Chelsea's progress closely and is passionate about eradicating a problem that has afflicted the club for years.
He took a prominent role this year in Chelsea launching a campaign against anti-Semitism, which is a problem among some fans that is exacerbated when they play Tottenham, who are known to have a big Jewish fan base.
While Uefa is still looking into the reports before deciding on any further action, a possible sanction could result in the closure of a section of Stamford Bridge for a Europa League knockout tie.
The ongoing racial storm threatens to overshadow their league game at Brighton, where Sarri's men are hoping to build on their morale-boosting win over champions City last weekend.
But Seagulls manager Chris Hughton feels off-field events will have little bearing on the pitch, saying: "They've adapted very well (to Sarri), any team that beats City at the moment has to have quality. The likes of Chelsea have so many threats that it's difficult to cope with all of them."

Football: Yoshida-san, restore the Lions' semangat, boleh?

Football: Yoshida-san, restore the Lions' semangat, boleh?

SINGAPORE - Dear Yoshida-san, welcome to Singapore.
Having taken up arguably the hottest seat in Singapore sport, I hope you know what you are in for with your first international assignment.
Your credentials have already been questioned and your command of English criticised but you can still prove them wrong.
I actually admire and appreciate how you were game enough to field questions in a foreign language at Thursday's press conference, even though you had a translator.
In any case, our most successful ringmaster ever was a chain-smoking Serb Radojko Avramovic who sometimes left people guessing what he just said with his gruff and mumbly diction.
He affectionately called Singapore fans "five million coaches", as there is no lack of persons, qualified or not, with an opinion of what the national coach should or should not do. Yet, Raddy delivered three Asean titles. So, ignore the haters and let your football (coaching) do the talking.
Like you said, communication will be key. And knowing English, and consequently Singlish, is not your first language, may I take the liberty to introduce you to some key words in our football lexicon.

There was a time when our Lions roared on the regional stage. But after three straight group-stage eliminations from the AFF Suzuki Cup, we have been reduced to whimpering pussycats of late.
We are looking to you to restore the semangat - which is similar to the Japanese concepts of seishin and tamashii - and revive the energy and enthusiasm, soul and spirit in the team.
You will have ideas about how Singapore football could improve, perhaps through the use of technology for example, but you may meet with a response that has frustrated previous coaches.
It is essentially known as money no enough.
Sport in Singapore generally does not enjoy as much corporate financial support as it does in your country. Vissel Kobe midfielder Andres Iniesta's $38.5 million annual salary tops the Football Association of Singapore's budget, for about four years. And football is the most well-funded sport here.
As a result, you will learn to make a little go a long way. And that applies to human resources too.
Ideally, you will have your best players at every Fifa international window, but next week, you will already miss having two of the nation's top young players - Irfan and Ikhsan Fandi - for the international friendlies against Solomon Islands and Myanmar.
They will play in the U-22 Merlion Cup instead. The situation may well be replicated during the subsequent Nov 11-19 window, when the duo is likely to play in the SEA Games, another U-22 tournament.
The SEA Games gold, which Singapore have never won, is prized by local sports authorities, who rightly or wrongly, sometimes place more importance on than the national team's endeavours.
It results in a biennial tussle for players. At least three players could not join the Lions for that memorable 0-0 World Cup qualifying draw in Japan because they had to stay with the SEA Games team in 2015.
But this is just how things are in Singapore - different people express patriotism in different ways.
One of them is national service, in which all Singaporean males have to be conscripted for around two years. This includes your talent pool, who may not be able to train and play regularly.
Agreeing to the initial two-year contract means you are essentially saying boleh, that you can deal with all these constraints and challenges and try and establish for the Lions a football identity that has been missing for years.
Given adequate time and support, I hope you will realise and internalise the spirit of our national anthem Majulah Singapura, which means "Onward Singapore".
You have astutely asked for unity among administrators, coaches, players, and Singaporeans in general. Hopefully, these various stakeholders can live up to the lyrics "Marilah kita bersatu/dengan semangat yang baru" which translates into "Come, let us unite with a new spirit", as we usher in a new football era under your reign.
Good luck and ganbatte.

Rodgers closing in on EPL return with Leicester

LONDON • Brendan Rodgers will soon make his return to managing in the Premier League, as Celtic "very reluctantly" granted him permission to talk to Leicester City.
The 46-year-old Northern Irishman, who has not coached a Premier League team since being sacked by Liverpool in October 2015, is in talks about filling the vacancy left by Claude Puel, who was sacked last Sunday.
Rodgers, who came agonisingly close to landing an elusive Premier League title for Liverpool in the 2013-14 season, has rebuilt his reputation in Scotland, guiding Celtic to a historic double treble in two seasons and are on course for a third one this term.
However, not even the lure of that - and getting the better of Rangers manager Steven Gerrard who played under him at Liverpool - has been enough to deter him from meeting the Leicester hierarchy.
"Celtic Football Club today confirmed that it has been approached by Leicester City to speak to Brendan Rodgers with regard to their current managerial vacancy," read a Celtic statement.
"Brendan has indicated to the club that this is an opportunity he wishes to investigate further and therefore, very reluctantly, the club has granted him permission to speak to Leicester."
Prior to Liverpool, Rodgers was in charge at Swansea, where he introduced a brand of possession-based play inspired by his interest in Spanish football.
Since arriving at Parkhead in 2016, Rodgers has won two league titles, three Scottish League Cups and two Scottish Cups.

Celtic are currently eight points clear of local rivals Rangers in the Scottish Premiership as they chase an eighth consecutive top-division title.
Puel was dismissed after 16 months in charge following Saturday's 4-1 defeat by Crystal Palace.
The 57-year-old Frenchman left the club 12th in the Premier League, having lost five of their past six league games and just eight points above the relegation zone.
First-team coaches Mike Stowell and Adam Sadler were put in temporary charge for their league match at home to Brighton yesterday.

Football: Atletico extend lead over Real with narrow win over Eibar

EIBAR, Spain (AFP) - Atletico Madrid needed Thomas Lemar to come off the bench and score an 85th-minute winner against Eibar on Saturday (April 20) as they stretched their lead over Real Madrid to seven points in La Liga.
Real play at home to in-form Athletic Bilbao on Sunday but Atletico took another step towards finishing above their city rivals for a second consecutive year by squeezing past Eibar 1-0 at Ipurua.
Without Antoine Griezmann and Diego Costa, who were both suspended, Diego Simeone's side looked set for a stalemate that would have given Real at least a sniff of second place.
Instead Lemar, on as a substitute, tucked home at the back post to end Eibar's resistance and reduce the gap behind run-away leaders Barcelona to six points.
Eibar have now won only once in their last eight games and stay 13th.
Barca host Real Sociedad later on Saturday and it would take an incredible collapse for the Catalans to be caught. If they beat Real Sociedad, Alaves on Tuesday and Levante next weekend, an eighth league title in 11 years will be confirmed.
But, in the same week that goalkeeper Jan Oblak signed a new contract, this victory comes as another boost to morale for Atletico, who have now won four out of their last five matches.
Lemar's goal will have done his confidence no harm either, after a difficult debut season with Atleti, who paid 60 million euros to sign the Frenchman from Monaco last summer. Simeone will hope for more from the 23-year-old next term.
Atletico created the only real chance of the first half and Angel Correa missed it, slid through by the busy Alvaro Morata only to see his finish saved by the feet of Marko Dmitrovic.
Morata should have scored himself shortly after half-time but dragged his shot wide of the far post while Koke's long-range effort had to be palmed over.
Sergi Enrich might have nicked it for Eibar had Diego Godin not intercepted at the front post and when Godin drew another excellent save from Dmitrovic after heading Koke's free-kick towards the corner, it seemed the hosts would hang on for a point.
But Eibar's defence was caught too high with five minutes left as Morata threaded Koke through and he crossed to the back post, where Lemar was free to score the winner.

Football: Qatari goal machine Ali targets Europe move before 2022 World Cup

ABU DHABI (REUTERS) - Almoez Ali brushed off a row about his eligibility to scoop an Asian Cup winner's medal and smash a 23-year-old scoring record on Friday (Feb 1), confirming that Qatar have a potential star in the making for when they host the 2022 World Cup.
Ali notched his ninth goal of the tournament in the 3-1 victory over Japan at Zayed Sports City, bettering the record of eight that Iranian Ali Daei managed the last time the tournament took place in the United Arab Emirates.
His spectacular overhead kick not only helped earn his country a first continental crown, it won the Sudan-born 22-year-old the Player of the Tournament and top goalscorer awards.
"I thought I'd score goals but not nine," he told reporters.
"I thought it could be two or three but the team helped me a lot because they defended so well, only conceding one goal, so I would have been embarrassed not to score goals.
"Breaking Ali Daei's record was something amazing for me."
Ali, who graduated from Qatar's Aspire Academy, said the next step he wanted to take in his career was a move to a European club.

"Of course, I look for European teams because in our league in Asia, not only in Qatar, but in all of Asia, we know teams are weak and we see that at the World Cup. They do not go far. Always, they go out," he said.
"I hope to go out (to Europe) to learn and to come back for the World Cup in Doha in 2022."
Qatar coach Felix Sanchez, a former Barcelona youth coach, said Ali's value to the team was not just in hitting the back of the net.
"Almoez is a fantastic player, he's a pleasure to coach," the Spaniard said.
"He's 100 per cent committed, each game he gives his all, and he arrived at this tournament in the perfect moment. He works for the team, he pressures the centre backs.
"He got two awards and they are fully deserved, in football we always talk about the group. Yes, he got these because of the group but he also worked really well.
"We're very proud of him. He's heading the right way."
A day that finished with Ali all smiles as he organised the team photo with the trophy on the pitch started out potentially fraught.
Ali and his team mate Bassam Al Rawi were the subject of a protest by the United Arab Emirates FA over their eligibility to represent Qatar which was dismissed by the Asian Football Confederation only hours before kickoff.
The striker said it had not been worried about it at all.
"No concern," he said.

Football: DC United's Wayne Rooney sees red for first time in MLS as Rossi nets hat-trick in LAFC's 4-0 win

(REUTERS) - Wayne Rooney was sent off for the first time in Major League Soccer (MLS) after the DC United forward made a poorly-timed lunging tackle on Los Angeles FC striker Diego Rossi on Saturday (April 6).
The 33-year-old, in his second season with DC United, lost control of the ball and lunged with both feet off the ground just as Rossi took a touch. His studs landed hard on Rossi's leg, just below the knee, scything down the Uruguayan.
The referee initially produced a yellow card but following a check with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), he changed his decision and showed the former England international a straight red card.
"I have no arguments," Rooney, who is England's leading scorer, told reporters. "It wasn't malicious, I didn't try to hurt him.
"But obviously I caught him. I was expecting (a red card) really when the referee gave me the yellow. It's the right call."
It was Rooney's first red card since 2014 and the seventh of his career for club and country. DC United, who were 3-0 down at the time, lost 4-0 as Rossi completed a hat-trick.

Football: Brighton to face Man City in FA Cup semi-finals after beating Millwall on penalties, Watford to play Wolves

Football: Brighton to face Man City in FA Cup semi-finals after beating Millwall on penalties, Watford to play Wolves

LONDON (THE GUARDIAN) - Brighton reached their first FA Cup semi-final since 1983 after coming back from the brink to beat Millwall 5-4 on penalties in their quarter-final tie on Sunday (March 18).
Millwall's devastation was immense. The Championship strugglers had led by two goals with two minutes remaining, only for Brighton to force extra time thanks to goals from Jurgen Locadia and Solly March.
The equaliser was gut-wrenching from Millwall's perspective, as goalkeeper David Martin somehow allowed March's harmless free kick drift past him in the fifth minute of added time.
Neil Harris' side could hardly believe their luck and, although they managed to force a shoot-out, their bravery went unrewarded as Jake Cooper blasted the decisive kick over the bar.
The only consolation for Millwall was taking part in one of the games of the season.
The home fans heckled every loose touch from the visitors, howled at every tight refereeing decision and urged their team to demonstrate their impressive giant-killing credentials.
The ear-splitting din acted as a leveller, making the underdogs run faster and tackle harder, and Millwall were quick to test Brighton's nerve.
No wonder Chris Hughton looked concerned on the touchline for much of the first half.
Brighton's timidity in possession invited pressure and Lee Gregory, Millwall's selfless lone forward, went close in the 29th minute, hooking on to the roof of the net.
Brighton crept into the contest as the half wore on, Beram Kayal spurning two decent chances, but Millwall began the second half in a frenzy, almost taking the lead in farcical circumstances.
Mat Ryan's clearance hit Shane Duffy and bounced back towards his own goal, but the Australian managed to gather the loose ball before Gregory could force it into the empty net. Such carelessness only served to encourage Millwall.
Kayal threatened from the edge of the area, drawing a good save from Martin with a measured effort, but Brighton were struggling to tame their impertinent opponents.
They had nobody to slow the tempo in the middle and their task became even more daunting when the wind started to swirl and hail fell from the darkening clouds.
The conditions were not for the faint-hearted, but they posed no problem for Millwall.
The game was just how they wanted it, broken and erratic, and they had chances to break the deadlock, Gregory and Wallace unfortunate to be denied by Ryan after breaking beyond Brighton's creaking back four.
Hughton replaced Alireza Jahanbakhsh with March, but Millwall broke through in the 70th minute when Alex Pearce charged on to a corner from the left and sent a brilliant header into the roof of the net.
Nine minutes later, the Den went wild when Wallace surged clear on the right and fired a low cross into the six-yard box. Aiden O'Brien showed more desire than any of Brighton's defenders and turned the ball past Ryan.
Brighton looked done. They had offered nothing for most of the afternoon.
Yet it was Hughton's substitutes who made the difference. Locadia pulled one back with a venomous shot in the 88th minute and the Millwall's fans howled when the fourth official's board showed four added minutes.
Time was running out when Brighton won one final free kick on the right. Ryan ran forward to join his teammates and he had a good view of a woeful goalkeeping error from Martin, who must have wanted the ground to swallow him whole after allowing March's overhit delivery to slip through his hands and into the right corner.
Harris turned away in astonishment on the touchline, but Millwall's manager could not wallow in self-pity.
He had to work out how to lift his troops for extra time and Millwall pushed at first, James Meredith's fizzing shot drawing an excellent save from Ryan. Mahlon Romeo put the rebound over.
The locals found their voice towards the end of extra time, raising the volume in an effort to get their exhausted team over the line, but there was still time for Shane Ferguson to earn a red card after kicking Lewis Dunk.
There was enough time left for one for piece of controversy when Locadia's goal was ruled out for a tight offside call against Jose Izqueirdo.
The game went to penalties and, when Glenn Murray missed the opening penalty, Millwall were favourites. But Ryan saved one Millwall penalty and then saw Jake Cooper fire over the bar to send Brighton into the hat for the semi-finals alongside Manchester City, Wolves and Watford.

Football: Klopp excited by Premier League title fight

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists the Premier League title race is something to get excited about rather than stressed about despite seeing his side overhauled by Manchester City in the past week.
City climbed to the top of the table on goal difference with victory against Everton in midweek but Liverpool's destiny remains in their own hands as they have a game in hand over Pep Guardiola's men, with both sides level on 62 points.
"It's getting exciting now," said Klopp on Friday (Feb 8).
"There was never a doubt that would happen. That was always clear. I don't think that anybody thought we would be top of the league with 12 points between us and another team with three games to go.
"The only chance to improve our position, even though it is a good position, is by winning football games."
Just over a week ago, Liverpool had the chance to move seven points clear at the top, but back-to-back draws with Leicester and West Ham on Monday have seen them reeled in by the champions.
Liverpool players and fans have been accused of letting nerves get to them in their desperation to end a 29-year wait to win the title.

And Klopp called on the home fans to make Anfield a cauldron when Bournemouth visit on Saturday.
"It's like shouting your soul on the pitch. That's how we say it in German," added Klopp.
"I know that with each fibre of our bodies we will be ready to fight for everything.
"The only thing I want to say after the season is we gave our everything."
There was good news for Liverpool off the field on Friday as the club announced a world-record £106 million (S$140 million) net profit last year thanks to the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona and a run to the Champions League final.
Much of that profit has already been reinvested in the signings of Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri, and Klopp is hoping he does not need to ask for a lot more money this summer.
"We built a really strong squad and that's a squad built for the future, not only this season," added the German.
"I hope we don't need too much money in the next years to be honest because if you have the right players in, you work with them and make the best of it."
Klopp's squad has been ravaged by injury and illness in recent weeks but he could have Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum back for Bournemouth's visit after all three returned to training on Thursday.

Football: Everton dish out 4-0 thrashing to awful Manchester United to dim their top-four EPL hopes

Football: Everton dish out 4-0 thrashing to awful Manchester United to dim their top-four EPL hopes

(REUTERS) - A woeful Manchester United suffered their fifth straight away defeat, in all competitions, with a 4-0 English Premier League hammering at the hands of a vibrant Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday (April 21).
United did not manage a shot on target until the 86th minute as they fell to their sixth loss in eight games since their memorable victory at Paris St-Germain in the Champions League.
The euphoria felt in Paris and at the start of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign already seems a distant memory after a United performance that lacked not only quality but aggression and fire.
"We just didn't perform. That was not worthy of a Manchester United team," said Solskjaer.
"We hold our hands up and apologise to everyone associated with the club," added the Norwegian, who went over to the travelling United support after the final whistle.
"Everton were better than us at all the basics. There are so many things that we need to do better to get a result. Talent has never been enough."
Brazilian Richarlison fired the Toffees ahead in the 13th minute with an acrobatic high volley after Dominic Calvert-Lewin flicked on a long throw.
Gylfi Sigurdsson made it 2-0 with a low drive from over 25 yards out that United goalkeeper David de Gea was slow to react to.
Lucas Digne then blasted in the third in the 56th minute after the Spaniard punched out a corner to the French full-back as United struggled to get even a foot in the game.
Icelandic playmaker Sigurdsson then put substitute Theo Walcott through with a clever pass through the legs of Victor Lindelof which the former Arsenal striker confidently converted.
That concluded a miserable week for United, eliminated from the Champions League by Barcelona on Tuesday, remain in sixth, outside the four qualification spots for next season's campaign. They are two points behind fourth-placed Arsenal (66) having played a game more.
Everton next play at Crystal Palace on Saturday, while United must now somehow pick themselves up in time for the visit of champions Manchester City to Old Trafford for the derby on Wednesday - a game that will help decide the destination of the Premier League title.
For Marco Silva's improving Everton, in seventh place, this was their third top-six scalp in as many home games following victories over Chelsea and Arsenal.
The first goal was the key," said Sigurdsson.
"After that we defended really well. It was important for us to get the next goal after going 2-0 up. It gave us constant belief and we controlled the game after that," he added.
The Red Devils had not lost five straight away games since 1981 and they ran 8.03 km less than Everton.

Football: Watford squeeze past QPR into FA Cup last eight

BERLIN (REUTERS) - Premier League's Watford were made to sweat to beat lowly Championship club Queens Park Rangers 1-0 on Friday (Feb 15) and book their spot in the FA Cup quarter-finals for the second time in four seasons.
Watford had possession in the first half but struggled to make any inroads against the solid home defence until Etienne Capoue swept a low shot into the net in first half stoppage time.
QPR turned the tables after the break, controlling the midfield but lacking the final touch up front.
Watford, who have never won the competition, put the ball in the net again in the 73rd minute but Andre Gray's effort was ruled offside in a very narrow call.
The visitors did it well in the final minutes, dropping deep to protect their lead as QPR frantically searched for an equaliser and with captain Toni Leistner missing a golden opportunity from point-blank range .

The 30-year-old Ozil, who is of Turkish descent, sparked controversy last year when he was photographed with Erdogan, raising questions about his loyalty on the eve of the defending champions' disastrous 2018 World Cup campaign in Russia. The couple, who have been dating since 2017, were married at the Four Seasons by the Bosphorous Strait, known for its terraces above the waters.

Football: Chelsea boss Sarri baffled by 6-0 humbling at Man City

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri said he could not understand what happened after Manchester City crushed his side 6-0 on Sunday (Feb 10) - their biggest ever defeat in the Premier League.
City scored four times inside 25 minutes and added two more goals in the second half to overtake Liverpool on goal difference at the top of the table.
The result was Chelsea's heaviest defeat in any competition since losing 7-0 to Nottingham Forest in 1991.
"At the moment I am not able to explain," Sarri, whose side slipped to sixth in the table, below Arsenal on goal difference after the defeat, told Sky Sports.
"During the week my feeling was good during training. Maybe the goal we conceded after three minutes it was difficult to play. It was difficult not to give them spaces. We were in trouble. I am not able to understand.
"We made a lot of mistakes against the wrong opponents. They played fantastic football and we made a lot of mistakes. We wanted to press them at the beginning of the action but the plan was completely ruined because we conceded after three minutes.
"I think the big difference between the two teams was the intensity of pressing. They pressed really well and we were not able to do it. We were not able to react in the right way. We were not able to stay in the match."

The Italian said his side had a problem away from home and added it was right he should shoulder responsibility for the performance.
"At the moment we have a big problem away," he said. "The beginning of the season we were better away than at home. But everything has changed in the last month. We need to understand.
"It is right. I am in charge of the team so it is right (that he faces pressure). You will have to ask the club (if there will be discussions about his future)."
