Football: Spurs win gives United more to be happy about than just David de Gea

Football: Spurs win gives United more to be happy about than just David de Gea

LONDON - It would be easy to simply file this one under "Games Manchester United Won Thanks To David de Gea".
And yet, while that particular cabinet must be bulging after the Spain goalkeeper's latest outstanding performance, the Red Devils' 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium on Sunday (Jan 13) was by no means an injustice.
The travelling United faithful celebrated wildly in the stands at their corner of the stadium for some time after the majority of the 80,000 had exited and had every reason to be thrilled.
For it was the way they saw off Mauricio Pochettino's formidable Spurs side that mattered to them. They were gritty, opportunistic, confident.
Even when Spurs had stirred from their slumber - they did not register a single shot on target in the first half - and started testing de Gea, one effort after another, United's players did not panic.
Jesse Lingard shone brighter than his England teammate Dele Alli, Paul Pogba was a cocky, assured presence at the tip of United's midfield trident, and the duo of Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic behind him, so often the target of fans ire during the Dark Mourinho Days, were excellent.
Centre-back Victor Lindelof, meanwhile, stuck to Spurs' chief goal-scorer Harry Kane like a leech, snapping away at his heels and giving him hardly any room in the penalty box.

Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and de Gea drew jeers and whistles from the home supporters for their time-wasting tactics in protecting their lead, and looked fully in control - something that rarely happened before Mourinho's sacking just before Christmas.
The swagger is back.
It should be noted, though, that the two teams had vastly different build-ups to Sunday's game.
United spent a week basking in the warmth with a training camp in Dubai, while Spurs negotiated a hard-earned 1-0 win over Chelsea in the League Cup semi-final.
This explained in part Spurs' slow start, and United's quickness of thought, which was highlighted by Pogba's superb pass to release Marcus Rashford, who raced past Jan Vertonghen to arrow a shot beyond Hugo Lloris just before half-time.
Much has been made of Spurs' title tilt - which now looks unlikely after two consecutive Premier League losses at home - but United exposed their shallow squad's inadequacies.
When Moussa Sissoko was forced off in the first half, they had no established central midfielder on the bench to come on for him. Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama are on the mend from injuries, while Mousa Dembele has started only seven games and is reportedly on the verge of a lucrative move to China.
Worse still, talisman Kane limped off the pitch after appearing to twist his ankle late on in the game. The team's second highest goal-getter? Asian Cup-bound Son.
Last week, Pochettino, who has been tipped as the leading contender for the permanent manager's job at United, spoke about Spurs having to "operate differently" if they are to take the next step and rub shoulders with the elite of European football. His words were taken as a call for more investment from Spurs, even if he downplayed his remarks later.
If the London club do not spend in the January transfer window, though, the lure of resources at Old Trafford in the summer, could be too much to turn down for Pochettino.

Football: Chelsea appeal to CAS against Fifa transfer ban covering two windows

(REUTERS) - English Premier League side Chelsea have filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against a transfer ban imposed by world football governing body Fifa, the CAS said on Friday (June 7).
The Europa League champions were sanctioned in February for breaching rules regarding the international transfer and registration of players under 18. They were also fined 600,000 Swiss francs (S$825,160).
The transfer ban prevents Chelsea from signing players in the close season and in the January transfer window in 2020 and CAS said it had registered the club's appeal, which could be considered just by written submissions.
"Following the hearing, if one is held... the panel deliberates and then issues its decision in the form of an Arbitral Award," the CAS statement read.
"It is not possible to say at this time when the Arbitral Award will be issued."
Chelsea had initially appealed against Fifa's ban in April and Fifa's Appeal Committee partially upheld the appeal, allowing the London club to register youth players during the period.
The club refuted Fifa's findings and had said last month they would appeal against the decision to the CAS.

The CAS also said it would not provide any more information on the matter until the panel came to a decision.

Football: Improved Denis Suarez ready to make impact, say Unai Emery

LONDON • With Granit Xhaka facing a late fitness test and Lucas Torreira suspended, Unai Emery has challenged Denis Suarez to finally make an impact in Arsenal's bid to climb back into the Premier League's top four.
Suarez has struggled since his January loan move from Barcelona and the Spanish midfielder is yet to make a competitive start for the Gunners.
But a series of impressive displays at Arsenal's recent training camp in Dubai could earn the 25-year-old a place in the starting line-up against Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium today (tomorrow morning, Singapore time).
Suarez played the full 90 minutes and created a goal for Carl Jenkinson in Arsenal 3-2 friendly victory over Al Nasr.
Arsenal boss Emery is encouraged by Suarez's timely improvement, saying: "He is okay for starting in the first XI, to give us this impact. We are going to need everybody, every player for the next matches.
"We decided to go away to train for four days and play a match in Dubai. But it's the same idea, the same spirit."
Emery was keen to work with Suarez again after signing him on loan at Sevilla in 2014-15.
Asked about the time it had taken Suarez to settle in north London, Emery added: "It's normal. Now we have a lot of players ready, with a big mentality and with a big performance to play and help us."
Beating Newcastle would give Arsenal a 10th successive home league win, equalling a run they last enjoyed in the 1997-98 season in Arsene Wenger's first full campaign as manager.
A victory is essential after Arsenal dropped to fifth place on Saturday as a result of Manchester United's 2-1 win over Watford.
Emery's men are one point behind United and can't afford to drop points as they battle to qualify for next season's Champions League via a top-four finish or winning the Europa League.
Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez has warned his players not to ease up as they inch closer to guaranteeing their safety.
The Magpies are seven points above the bottom three and their 35-point total is just three short of the number Benitez believes will be enough to stay up.
Newcastle have lost only one of their last six league games, but Benitez is taking nothing for granted.
"If you see what Arsenal are doing, they are doing really well, so we cannot expect that it will be an easy game," the Spaniard said.
"We have now 35 and we are fine, but still we have to win. The next game is the most important for us, it's like a final for us and I don't think about what the others will do."

Football: 'Start playing like Manchester United', pleads Rashford

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Marcus Rashford has called on Manchester United players to "be real with each other" after Manchester City condemned them to a seventh defeat in nine games on Wednesday (April 24).
Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane struck for the visitors in 12 second-half minutes at Old Trafford to seal a 2-0 win over United, who remain three points adrift of the top four.
"Today we didn't play like Manchester United," Rashford told Sky Sports.
"It's not right. The bare minimum is to work hard and give all for the badge, the supporters, the club and yourself.
"It has been a tough road to get to where we are, to get there and not be putting up the same performances as we were in January is disappointing. We know what's been going wrong - it's mentality and willingness to run for your team.
"Forget the league and top four, you don't lose this game. It's that simple as a Manchester United fan. We never call each other out but we have to be real with each other. It's a matter of trying to improve each other.
"It's more getting back used to doing it on the pitch. They (the supporters) know we can do it. Forget the top four and the Champions League. We have to get to the bottom of it and start playing like Manchester United for ourselves."

This was a night for Spurs fans to savour a 2-0 Premier League win over Crystal Palace that took them back above their neighbours Arsenal into third spot, but it was an evening that meant even more.
It meant they now have the finest stadium in the country. All those planning debates, frustrating delays and rising expenses were upliftingly worthwhile.
Fans, players, staff and board stood during the brief ceremony and looked proudly around on Wednesday. Harry Kane, usually the model of professional focus, permitted himself a glance up, admiring his new home.
Club chairman Daniel Levy dreamt big with the state-of-the-art building and now has to dress the windows. He has not signed any player in the past two transfer periods.
Palace held Spurs to a goal-less first half, but the hosts were not to be denied. Ten minutes after the restart, Son fired in a shot that thrilled the crowd of 59,215 before Eriksen added the icing on the party cake 10 minutes from time.
Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said his club are now "World Cup winners" in terms of facilities and called on his players to now perform at a "world-class" level.
"Now we are World Cup winners in facilities," said Pochettino. "Now the stadium is here and we need to be on the same level."

Football: Gareth Bale 'nowhere near' being Real's leader, says ex-Madrid striker Mijatovic

Football: Gareth Bale 'nowhere near' being Real's leader, says ex-Madrid striker Mijatovic

(REUTERS) - Former Real Madrid striker Predrag Mijatovic criticised Gareth Bale for lacking leadership qualities and hit out at coach Santiago Solari after the club's La Liga title ambitions were dented by Thursday's (Jan 3) 2-2 draw at Villarreal.
Real's record signing Bale had to be substituted at halftime after a knock when his side were 2-1 up and Solari later took off playmaker Luka Modric, who had been ill with flu in the build-up to the game.
Veteran midfielder Santi Cazorla then scored for the second time in the game by heading in an equaliser with eight minutes remaining, leaving Madrid in fourth place in the standings and seven points adrift of leaders Barcelona.
"What keeps happening with Bale is a real shame. I like him a lot as a player but he is nowhere near being the leader of the team after Cristiano Ronaldo left," Mijatovic told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser.
"It's worrying that he gets injured so often."
Bale, who has scored only four goals in the league this season, has been injured over 20 times since his 105 million euro (S$163.2 million) signing from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013.
Although he has not suffered any serious injuries this campaign, he has been substituted 15 times in all competitions, sparking concerns about his ability to last 90 minutes.
Mijatovic, scorer of the goal which won the 1998 Champions League final for Madrid over Juventus, also criticised Real coach Solari for removing Modric and said he has not enjoyed watching his former side this season.
"If a player starts a game and feels good and doesn't ask to be substituted, I can't understand why you would take him off. He made a big mistake by taking off Modric," he said.
"I am struggling to watch Real Madrid this season. They played well in the first half (against Villarreal) then when we thought they were going to kick on they played a disastrous second half with no gameplan.
"They have taken a step back in the league this season. I don't think it's a problem of attitude, but more one of impotence. The way they are playing does not make me feel optimistic." Mijatovic's feelings were echoed in the Spanish media.
"It was like tearing your hair out," said newspaper Marca of Madrid's performance, also describing the team's campaign, in which they sacked coach Julen Lopetegui in October, as "a recurring nightmare."

Football: Christian Pulisic is most expensive American player in history after $100m move to Chelsea

LONDON (THE GUARDIAN, AFP) - Chelsea made the first major statement of intent in the January transfer window by signing United States forward Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund for a reported fee of £58 million (S$100.3 million) on Wednesday (Jan 3).
The 20-year-old becomes the most expensive American player in history and will be loaned back to the German Bundesliga leaders until the end of the season.
Pulisic, who moved to Germany as a teenager and has played more than 80 times for Dortmund, has featured more in the Champions League this season than the domestic league as coach Lucien Favre favours English winger Jadon Sancho in his line-up.
He admitted in November last year that he hoped to play in the English Premier League, having refused to extend his existing contract expiring in June 2020.
Pulisic said in a statement issued by Chelsea: "It's a privilege to have signed for such a legendary club and I look forward to working hard towards being a contributor to their team of world-class players."
Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said: "It was always Christian's dream to play in the Premier League. That certainly has to do with his American background and, as a result, we were unable to extend his contract.
"Against this background, we have decided to accept an extremely lucrative bid by Chelsea, given the low contract maturity.

"Christian Pulisic is a character- perfect player. I am sure that in the coming months, he will do everything in his power to bring his high quality to the team and to achieve his sporting goals with his teammates at Borussia Dortmund."
A former Under-17 captain, Pulisic became the youngest player to captain the US senior side aged 20 years and 63 days in November last year.
Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia stated her delight to have signed "one of Europe's most sought-after young players... who has the potential to become an important Chelsea player for many years to come".

Spying common in Europe, says Guardiola

Spying common in Europe, says Guardiola

LONDON • Pep Guardiola has hinted that while his staff spied on opponents during his spells in charge of Barcelona and Bayern Munich, there was no chance of that occurring under his watch in England.
Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa is being investigated by the English Football League after Derby spotted one of his scouts spying on their training session last week.
But the Manchester City boss has not lost any of his admiration for his friend Bielsa, who helped him during the early stages of his managerial career.
"My respect remains the same," he said at a press conference ahead of their Premier League trip to relegation-threatened Huddersfield today. "I admired what he did in the past, so why should I change my opinion?
"In other countries, everybody does that (spying). It is more difficult. It is private. But, in all the countries I have been, everybody does it.
"When we were training at Bayern, there were people in the little mountains with cameras and the opponent was watching what we did.
"It is the culture of the clubs. Not because you said, 'You have to do it'. It is the leagues. (But) I am not going to send anyone to spy on Huddersfield."

NOT SO STRAIGHTFORWARD
It's a little bit of a problem really because we don't know... We will have to, immediately adapt after five or 10 minutes.
PEP GUARDIOLA, Manchester City manager, on how his team must be wary today against a Huddersfield side with a new coach in charge.

Not like any advantage will be gleaned even if City employ subterfuge as their opponents currently do not have a full-time manager, with David Wagner leaving by mutual consent earlier last week.
Under-23 coach Mark Hudson will take charge until a permanent appointment is made and Guardiola admitted he "did not know exactly anything" as his counterpart was an unknown quantity.
Warning his men they have to adapt as quickly as possible today, he told reporters: "It's a little bit of a problem really because we don't know. Of course, we have some information about what he's done at the U-23 (level), but it's completely different (in the league).
"Whether they will play long or short balls, whether they will go four in the back, five in the back, one striker or two strikers? High pressing or low pressing?
"We will have to immediately adapt after five or 10 minutes, the players have to understand what is going to happen with the game."
The Spaniard also touched on additions, revealing that while City are unlikely to move for anyone in the January transfer window, the league champions will be targeting not only a central midfielder but also a left-back in the summer.
He has long spoken of City's need for an alternative to Fernandinho, given that they have no one who possesses like-for-like qualities.
But with Benjamin Mendy - who is close to returning after being out since November - having had two serious knee injuries in 18 months, Guardiola has highlighted the position as an area of concern.
He added: "We survived well last season, this season too, but we are thinking about that. At the end of the season, we are going to look at both options."
Leicester defender Ben Chilwell is thought to be on his shortlist.

Football: Injuries no excuse for quadruple chasing Man City, says Guardiola

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has warned his players not to use injuries and fatigue as an excuse as the English champions chase a historic quadruple of trophies this season.
City secured the first of a potential four-trophy haul by beating Chelsea on penalties on Sunday in the League Cup and entertain West Ham in the Premier League on Wednesday just a point adrift of leaders Liverpool.
Guardiola's men also face Swansea in the FA Cup quarter-finals and are well set for the last eight of the Champions League after winning 3-2 away to Schalke in the first leg of their last 16 tie.
However, injuries to Aymeric Laporte and Fernandinho blighted victory on Sunday with John Stones and Gabriel Jesus also unlikely to return before an international break in mid-March.
"I don't want to see excuses from my players about tiredness, fixtures, schedules, the number of games. That is nothing," said Guardiola on Tuesday (Feb 26).
"When you have the opportunity to fight until the end, to fight for the title, then the power, the energy that gives you that is higher than any excuses you find.
"We have to run and beat them (the opposition), then beat them again. In the last two months of the season, the mentality makes the difference.
"I don't care about the way we play. I want the smell in the locker room, I want to smell at the beginning of the game and during the game, that we can win.
"When one competition is over I want to see that we want to win this title. I want to see it on their faces they want to win the title and I hope that after I will be able to tell you I saw something special."
Fernandinho's absence was strongly felt when City lost to Crystal Palace and Leicester in December to cede Liverpool an advantage in the title race, while Laporte has made such a big impression in just over a year in England that the Frenchman was rewarded with a new contract last week.
"People say: Without this player, they are not the same. It doesn't matter," added Guardiola.
"We have a good squad, a good second team, and I want to see the desire that we want to win the title."
A run of three draws in four Premier League games for Liverpool has allowed the champions back into the race, the latest of which came in a 0-0 draw away to Manchester United in the hours before the League Cup final.
And Guardiola wants his side to continue applying pressure with Liverpool desperate to end a 29-year wait to win the title.
"When I've said that we focus on our game, that's because it's the truth, but of course we look at what they do, and when they don't win we are happy," he said.
"We have the difference of one point between us and we have 33 to play for so it's in our hands. It's in their hands but our hands too.
"The only thing we can do is put on pressure, to feel we are not to drop points, but to win. Every game is the same, when you are on top you can drop points but when you are behind, you cannot."

DAKAR • Egypt striker Mohamed Salah was named the African Footballer of the Year for the second straight year at the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) awards ceremony in Dakar on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old Liverpool star finished first in a vote by technical directors and head coaches of 56 CAF member associations, with clubmate Sadio Mane of Senegal and Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Gabon the other finalists.
"This award is very big for me. I have dreamt of winning this award since I was a child and now I have done so twice in a row," said Salah, who won BBC's African Footballer of the Year award last month.
"My thanks go to my family, my teammates and my fans, and I dedicate this trophy to my homeland Egypt."
It was an identical outcome to last year when Salah became only the second Egyptian after 1983 winner Mahmoud El Khatib to be voted the best footballer in Africa.
Salah netted 44 goals in all competitions for Liverpool last season - his first with the Reds - and has bagged 13 Premier League goals so far this season.
He was born in a northern Egyptian town Nagrig and used to make eight-hour return trips on buses to train with Cairo-based El Mokawloon (Arab Contractors).
Spotted by scouts from Swiss club Basel, he moved there in 2012 before joining Chelsea two years later.
Salah found scoring difficult early in his professional career and was nicknamed "chancentod" (chance killer) by the Swiss media.
Unhappy with his two-goal return, Chelsea loaned Salah to Italian outfits Fiorentina and Roma, then sold him to the latter club.
Salah blossomed in Rome, averaging close to a goal every two matches, and Liverpool paid almost £37 million (S$63.8 million) to sign him two years ago.
His next goal will be to match the four straight African awards won by former Manchester City and Ivory Coast star Yaya Toure.

Football: Tottenham's collective strength can overcome Ajax's young brigade in semi-finals, says Pochettino

Football: Tottenham's collective strength can overcome Ajax's young brigade in semi-finals, says Pochettino

LONDON (AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE) - Mauricio Pochettino has told Tottenham to shrug off the absence of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min as they prepare to face Ajax in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday (April 30).
Kane headlines a lengthy injury list which also includes Erik Lamela and Harry Winks, while Son is suspended.
But, having upset the odds to end Manchester City's quest for a quadruple of trophies in the quarter-finals, manager Pochettino insisted Spurs' strength as a collective can overcome Ajax's talented group of rising stars.
"To be in a Champions League semi-final is something I dreamed about. You need to settle your dreams, to infinity and beyond," Pochettino said at his pre-match press conference on Monday ahead of Tottenham's first European Cup semi-final since 1962.
"The chance to play a semi-final for Tottenham has not happened often. We are in a circumstance that is not going to change and we must be ready.
"It is impossible to be tired, impossible to not be excited to play. I am sure there is no doubt we will have the energy for 90 minutes."
However, while Pochettino's stretched squad were slipping to a sixth defeat in their last 10 Premier League games to West Ham on Saturday, Ajax have had a full week to rest as the entire Dutch league calendar for the weekend was postponed to allow them extra time to prepare.

Without Kane, who is not expected to return this season unless Spurs make it to the Champions League final on June 1, Tottenham's goals have dried up since a thrilling 4-3 defeat in the second leg of their quarter-final at City was enough to progress on away goals.
Christian Eriksen's late strike to secure a 1-0 victory over Brighton last Tuesday was Spurs' only goal in their past three games.
Son's absence means Pochettino is robbed of another goal threat, with Lucas Moura and Fernando Llorente his only striking options.
However, the Argentinian said Spurs' teamwork can compensate for that lack of firepower.
"I think the point is that we arrive where we are now because we were a team and we are going to be a team," he said.
"I don't care who is going to score. Always it's an issue to not have all the players fit but, in front of any name was the team, the collective."
Pochettino also played down any suggestion that Kane could return in time for the second leg if the tie is still alive heading to the Johan Cruyff Arena next week.
"He's doing well. He's working and starting to run a bit inside. His rehab is so good, but we cannot create any idea that we maybe cannot achieve.
"The most important thing is that he is in a good place and we'll see what happens."

Football: Man City blast 'false accusations' as Uefa opens spending rules probe

ZURICH (AFP) - Uefa on Thursday (March 7) announced they were opening an investigation into whether or not Manchester City broke Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, a breach that could lead to a devastating Champions League ban.
However, English champions City insisted the accusations against them are false and that they welcomed the opportunity to clear their name.
German magazine Der Spiegel, using material purportedly obtained from the whistleblowing outlet Football Leaks, alleged in November that City had set up sponsorship deals to circumvent regulations limiting how much money owners can put into a club.
"The Investigatory Chamber of the independent Uefa Club Financial Control Body has today opened a formal investigation into Manchester City FC for potential breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations," said a Uefa statement on Thursday.
"The investigation will focus on several alleged violations of FFP that were recently made public in various media outlets."
City responded immediately by saying they supported the investigation and that they had nothing to hide.
"Manchester City welcomes the opening of a formal Uefa investigation as an opportunity to bring to an end the speculation resulting from the illegal hacking and out of context publication of City emails," the club said in a statement.
"The accusation of financial irregularities are entirely false. The club's published accounts are full and complete and a matter of legal and regulatory record."

City had earlier responded to Der Spiegel's claims by saying there had been an "organised and clear" attempt to damage the club's reputation.
A ban from Uefa competitions, including the Champions League, is a potential punishment if City are found guilty of FFP breaches.
City were fined €60 million (S$90 million) and subjected to squad, wage and spending caps in a 2014 settlement agreed with Uefa following a previous breach of the rules.
City coach Pep Guardiola has always insisted that City would accept a ban but does not believe it is likely after discussions with the club's UAE owners.

QUESTIONS FOR PSG, MILAN

"We will not be banned, no. That's what I think because I trust in my chairman, with my CEO, what they have explained to me," he said.
"If it happens, because Uefa decide that, we will accept it and move forward."
City are not the only European heavyweight to be caught up in claims of breaking financial fair play rules.
French champions Paris Saint-Germain quashed reports they could be forced to sell either Kylian Mbappe or Neymar in a bid to circumvent eventual FFP sanctions.
Qatar-owned PSG, who splashed a combined total of more than €400 million in 2017 for Brazil star Neymar and France World Cup winner Mbappe, blasted allegations as "totally false and ridiculous".
Former European champions AC Milan were warned in December that they risk being excluded from European competition if they fail to "break even".
Milan had already been banned for a year from the Europa League due to breaching FFP regulations before winning an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) last year.
But Uefa said the former seven-time European champions again face suspension from continental competition in future seasons "should the club not be break-even compliant at 30 June 2021".

Klopp hails Salah as he targets 97-point total

LONDON • Jurgen Klopp was "blown away" by the brilliance of Mohamed Salah's strike against Chelsea as he urged Liverpool to produce a flawless finish to the English Premier League title race.
The Egypt international struck an astounding goal just two minutes after fellow forward Sadio Mane - his 13th in 16 games - opened the scoring at Anfield as the Reds regained a two-point lead over Manchester City with a 2-0 Premier League victory against Maurizio Sarri's side on Sunday.
While Klopp was thrilled by what he described as a complete team performance, it was Salah's emphatic finish past Kepa Arrizabalaga that left him momentarily speechless.
He said post-game: "I didn't think anything in that moment, but I know I was really happy because I was in line with the ball and maybe I saw first that it would go in.
"It was a really outstanding finish and I don't want to minimise that but I loved the first goal, too. I was immediately reminded of the 4-3 against Borussia Dortmund.
"Hendo (Jordan Henderson) instead of Milly (James Milner) and Sadio instead of Dejan (Lovren), but good team play, good cross, good header. The performance was really good, but you need the goals and we got them."
Salah has 19 league goals, 22 in total, but had been on a barren run by his high standards with one goal in 10 games before he sealed the win against his former club.
Asked about the drought, Klopp said: "The answer in football is always work rate and the work rate of all three up front was outstanding."

Although Liverpool are only four wins from their first league title since 1990 should City slip up in any of their remaining five matches, Klopp has insisted the focus is on finishing the season with 97 points and not on what Pep Guardiola's team produce.
The German added: "The biggest challenge for us is always facing the world outside. We play our game.
"We only try to collect as many points as possible. What is it now, 85? Four games to play, 97. Let's try. If that's enough, then perfect. If not, we cannot change it.
"By the way, on this point, we can finally close the slipping book. Robbo (Andrew Robertson) slipped (during the game) and nothing happened, so it's not a Liverpool thing. Done."
Defender Virgil van Dijk also urged his teammates to take it game by game, despite the red half of Merseyside anticipating they will finally end 29 years of title hurt next month.
He said: "We just focus on our games, we have a massive game next (at Porto) in the Champions League, then to Cardiff which will be tough as well."

Manchester's homeless in good Kompany

Manchester's homeless in good Kompany
LONDON • Vincent Kompany believes that he has a duty to tackle the issue of homelessness in Manchester, which he has called home for the past 10 years.
The 32-year-old Manchester City captain earlier this year set up a combined initiative called Tackle4Mcr with Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham in a bid to inspire social change in the region.
The BBC reported on Friday that he will also donate all profits from his testimonial match next year to Manchester's homeless.
In an interview with the Manchester Evening News, the Belgian explained why he felt the need to tackle the problem.
"It's undeniable - globally, England, the whole of the UK, is well off," he said.
"And in this part of the world, for this (homelessness) to still be possible, it's actually quite shameful.
"But problems happen - and if we have enough solidarity, we can perhaps change things for the future."
He added that the issue was more evident in the city than in the suburbs, and he realised this only when City's training ground moved from the outskirts to the complex around the Etihad Stadium in the east of the city.
Until 2014, many of the players travelled from their homes in the Cheshire suburbs to their old training ground in Carrington and were less aware of life in the city.
"It's a different thing if you live in the outskirts and you never see it, than if you live in the middle of it and you see it every day," he said.
"We're very closely linked to each other, no matter how much disparity there is in wealth. We live in the same environment, the same area and, if people have the means to help, they should do it."
The defender, who has led City to three Premier League titles, also felt that his efforts are aimed at trying to create a positive learning environment for his children. He married local girl Carla Higgs in 2011 and they are raising their daughter Sienna in the region.
He felt that any kids he has should grow up in an area where they can be "proud of how people behave" when help is easily rendered to those in need.
"I think we live in such a selfish world - it's all about guys trying to get on top by attacking the other one with populist rhetoric," he said.
"It's so easy now with social media to always create a divide and get on top. It's a lot harder to bring people together to do something tangible and something that brings us closer."

It has three main sources of funding to operate: The Mayor's Homelessness Fund which has so far raised over £125,000; Tackle4MCR which has funneled £1m through the donations of Manchester City's Vincent Kompany and, finally, Big Change Manchester (Real Change Manchester in some boroughs) which is open to donations from the public.

Football: MLS champions Atlanta name former Dutch star Frank de Boer as coach

Football: MLS champions Atlanta name former Dutch star Frank de Boer as coach

NEW YORK (AFP) - Major League Soccer (MLS) champions Atlanta United have named retired Dutch star Frank de Boer as the club's new coach, replacing Argentinian Gerardo Martino.
The 48-year-old Dutchman guided his former club Ajax to four consecutive Dutch league titles but less successful stints followed at Inter Milan and England's Crystal Palace.
In announcing last October that he was leaving Atlanta, Martino said the grind of a club campaign kept him from going home as much as he wanted. But he has been linked to the Mexican national team.
Former defender de Boer takes over on Jan 1 with Atlanta set for a pre-season match on Jan 14 and a Concacaf Champions League campaign that begins in February.
"The club's sportive ambitions, as set out in a long-term strategy to be the best in class, clearly fits my personal ambitions," he said.
"I would like to build on the current success to develop a secure, solid foundation for the club at the top of MLS and beyond."
De Boer lasted only 85 days at Inter after losing four of five Serie A matches and was gone after 10 weeks from Crystal Palace after a 0-4 start in the 2017-18 Premier League.
"Frank de Boer has a distinguished background, both as manager and player, and we're ecstatic to welcome him to our club," Atlanta president Darren Eales said.
Atlanta secured their first MLS Cup in just their second season when they beat Portland Timbers 2-0 earlier this month.
