Juve await 8th title in a row as Ron sulks
TURIN • While Juventus have to turn the page on yet another Champions League disappointment as they focus on sealing an eighth straight Serie A title at home to Fiorentina today, a summer of change is expected following their latest failure.According to Italian daily La Gazzetta dello Sport, Cristiano Ronaldo, who Juventus paid a club-record €100 million (S$152.3 million) fee to Real Madrid last summer, with the specific aim of ending their 23-year European Cup drought, is livid after their midweek quarter-final exit.

Solskjaer laments 'poorest' performance

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted his Manchester United team had taken "a big step backwards" after turning in the worst display of his four-month reign, as Wolves sent them packing from the FA Cup with a 2-1 win on Saturday.
Marcus Rashford's added-time strike was not enough as Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota fired Nuno Espirito Santo's side into their first semi-final appearance since 1998.
This was United's second straight defeat and Solskjaer conceded "quite a lot was missing today" from his players, who were second-best at Molineux.
The United caretaker manager said: "It was the poorest performance we've had.
"We never had the urgency and quality on the ball, even though without the ball in the first half, we did okay.
"There was a lack of urgency going forward and a lack of forward passing and a lack of regains.
"We felt too comfortable in possession and we never managed to put their goalkeeper or defenders under pressure. Today, we got what we deserved because we never deserved to win this game."

Wolves captain Conor Coady showing his delight after attacking midfielder Diogo Jota scored their second goal in the 2-1 FA Cup quarter-final win over Manchester United at the Molineux Stadium on Saturday.

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, interim Manchester United boss, on his team's poor display in the loss to Wolves in the FA Cup.

However, the Norwegian was still upbeat for the rest of the season, claiming that United had "much to play for" as they aim for a top-four finish in the Premier League and progression past Barcelona in the last eight of the Champions League.
He said: "We're in a great position in the league, we've got the Champions League. You can't sulk for too long. We've got to look forward and put the result today behind us.
"Manchester United in April and May always find their form. We can't wait for the challenge when Barcelona come."
While Solskjaer will not lift any domestic silverware this term, newly promoted Wolves, who had upset Liverpool in the third round, are in with a huge shout of winning their first trophy since lifting the League Cup in 1980.
And Santo, who has yet to win a major honour in his managerial career, paid tribute to "the amazing support of our fans believing in us", with the 12th man playing its part in spurring his players on against the Red Devils.
The Portuguese said: "It means a lot of course. The FA Cup is the oldest competition and we played well.
"The noise was fantastic. We achieved it together. Now, we have to prepare for the next one."
Wolves captain Conor Coady also felt it was "a deserved result" as the home side "nullified them from start to finish".
He added: "We were outstanding. They are an unbelievable club with talented players, (but) we said before in the changing rooms, we have the chance to make history and we now have the chance to go through again."

Football: England captain Harry Kane wants to end career as NFL kicker

LONDON (REUTERS) - England captain Harry Kane has his heart set on ending his playing career in the United States kicking field goals for a team in the National Football League (NFL).
Kane, the top scorer at last year's Fifa World Cup, has long been an admirer of American football and believes successfully switching sports late in his career will help him go down in history as one of the greatest sportsmen of all time.
The path from European football to the United States is a well-travelled one, with the likes of David Beckham, Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard all ending up in America's top soccer league (MLS), but Kane wants to blaze his own trail.
"(The desire to play in the NFL) is real," the Tottenham Hotspur striker told ESPN in an interview. "(It's) something that in 10 or 12 years I definitely want to try.
"If you play in the Premier League and the World Cup and you then play in the NFL, would you then be considered one of the greatest sportsmen ever?
"It goes back to that drive to be the best. Even if I download a game on my phone, can I be the best in the world?"
Kane is a fan of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and was at the Super Bowl this year, watching from the stands as the 41-year-old won his sixth title.

"We've had a similar path being doubted when we were younger. Maybe not being the best athletes as kids," Kane added. "Not many people thought he'd become that good or even play in the NFL and he went on to become the best ever.
"At the time, it gave me a real boost to say, look, anything is possible. If you have that self-belief and that drive and that hunger, you can do it."

Football: Struggling Fulham sign Dutch forward Babel from Besiktas

LONDON (REUTERS) - Fulham have signed Dutch international forward Ryan Babel from Turkish club Besiktas on a permanent deal running until the end of the season, the Premier League club said on Tuesday (Jan 15).
Babel makes a return to the English game, having made 146 appearances for Liverpool during his three-and-a-half year stint on Merseyside between 2007 and 2011.
The 32-year-old is manager Claudio Ranieri's first signing of the January window as 19th-placed Fulham seek a way out of the Premier League relegation zone.
"I definitely have faith that Fulham can stay up," Babel told the club's website.
"That's one of the reasons that I'm here, to try and help that to happen. I'm ready to go, I'm excited and I can't wait."
Babel could make his debut when Fulham host Tottenham Hotspur in the league on Sunday.

Football: Messi torments Liverpool with 600th Barca goal in 3-0 win

BARCELONA (REUTERS) - Lionel Messi put Barcelona on the verge of the Champions League final with a devastating double in a 3-0 home win over Liverpool in the first leg of their last-four clash on Wednesday (May 1), taking his goal tally for the Catalans to 600.
The Argentine's milestone goal was a moment of brilliance as he curled a dazzling free kick into the top corner from distance to add gloss to a scoreline that did not reflect the balance of play.
Yet whereas Barcelona took their chances with clinical precision, Liverpool wasted a string of opportunities that fell their way.
Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez reminded the visitors of his superb finishing by opening the scoring in the 26th minute of a tense and finely-balanced first half at the Nou Camp, darting between two Liverpool defenders to divert Jordi Alba's cross into the net.
Barca captain Messi scored the all-important second goal of the night in the 75th minute, chesting the ball down on the rebound and dribbling it over the line after Suarez had hammered the crossbar with a shot with his knee.
The Argentine then added to Barca's already huge advantage to take into next Tuesday's second leg at Anfield by smashing home his sizzling free kick in the 82nd minute.
"Four goals would have been better than three but this is a very good result," Messi told reporters.
"We know that the tie isn't over, Anfield is a very difficult place to go but we're happy with the super game we played tonight. They clearly wanted to score because an away goal means a lot but they didn't and we have a great advantage."

LITTLE MERCY

Liverpool, who were beaten 3-1 in last year's final by Real Madrid, played far better than the scoreline suggested, carving out a number of clear chances but spurning them all.
Barca's South American duo of Suarez and Messi showed little mercy whenever they sniffed out a chance and condemned Juergen Klopp's side to their first defeat in any competition since January with some ruthless finishing.
Klopp praised his side's performance but he was not optimistic about the likelihood of a miraculous turnaround.
"I was completely happy with how we played, we played between the lines, we had chances and caused them a lot of problems," the German told a news conference.
"If you lose away it's not a massive problem as long as you scored a goal but we didn't score that goal and that makes things a lot harder. We have a chance because it's football but we had a much bigger chance before tonight."
Suarez spared little thought for his former employers following his eventful three-and-a-half-year stay on Merseyside, as he celebrated his opening strike with relish, racing behind the goal and wagging his finger at the delighted Barca fans.

GLORIOUS CHANCE

Sadio Mane squandered a glorious chance to level for the Premier League side later in the first half but scooped the ball over the bar, while James Milner and Mohamed Salah were both denied by Barca's excellent Marc-Andre ter Stegen later on.
Klopp's side had done an impressive job of shackling Barca's all-time top scorer Messi, but there was little they could do when the Argentine pounced on the loose ball after Suarez had hit the crossbar.
Messi sparked further celebrations at a packed Nou Camp with another outstanding free kick, yet the drama in this blockbuster European encounter was far from over.
Liverpool again went agonisingly close to snatching an away goal as Barca's Ivan Rakitic scrambled the ball off the goalline only to find the feet of Salah, who somehow smashed the rebound against the near post.
Barca could have seized an even bigger advantage in the tie with two golden chances as Liverpool tired that fell to substitute Ousmane Dembele, but the Frenchman missed the target the first time then shot straight into the hands of goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Football: Jurgen Klopp fires up Liverpool with 'It's only pain' motto, Pep Guardiola urges City to 'be precise'

LONDON (THE GUARDIAN) - Jurgen Klopp has vowed Liverpool's injury-hit squad will fight to the last to land the club's first English Premier League title in 29 years on Sunday (May 12) and will go to Wolves with the motto that defines their season: "It's only pain."
The Reds picked up several problems in securing a remarkable second successive Champions League final on Tuesday, with Andy Robertson and Jordan Henderson hurt in the 4-0 win against Barcelona.
But, with the EPL title at stake - they need to beat Wolves at home to capitalise on any slip by Manchester City at Brighton - Klopp revealed his walking wounded were determined to play on.
Only Roberto Firmino and Naby Keita are confirmed absentees, while Mohamed Salah, the league's top scorer on 22 goals, should be available after missing their Champions League semi-final triumph through concussion.
At his pre-match press conference on Friday, Klopp said: "The famous three words of this week in the dressing room. Very important for all the young lads to learn.
"Hendo said, 'It's only pain', Robbo said, 'It's only pain', but it was real pain. Wow. Robbo could deal with the pain but couldn't activate the muscle. They should be fine. Mo looked good around the celebrations... Today, he will join in training."
The German also felt such defiance had characterised their entire campaign and that his bond with the club's fans, one that underpinned incredible victory over the Spanish champions, would be non-existent without it.

He explained: "In Liverpool, it's mainly about the supporters and not me. If I want to love Liverpool fans, I have a bigger choice because there are so many. They have to deal with me and my character.
"It's a proper fit, but it's about the performance. I could be the most funny guy in the world but, if the boys would not play good football, nobody would laugh at my jokes.
"It's all about the boys, always. They have to deliver. If they don't, no chance. The group of players we have here is so special. Since Tuesday, if I had to find a very short description for the group, I would say, 'It's only pain'. That's how they went through the season. It was always hard, always difficult, but it was only pain. So let's carry on."
Klopp also touched on the June 1 Champions League final with Tottenham as a meeting of the "two teams who showed the biggest heart in the whole competition", but was critical of the exorbitant prices fans were being charged and of Uefa's "irresponsible" choice of venues for the two European finals.
He added: "With Madrid, it's unbelievably expensive, but it's not another part of the world at least. Going to Baku (in Azerbaijan) for a Europa League final is really funny.
"The guys who make the decisions, I don't know what they have for breakfast.
"Baku, I don't even know how to go there or if there is any regular flight (from England). These decisions, they must be more sensible and reasonable."
However, destiny remains in the hands of Pep Guardiola's team, who will be the first to retain the title since Manchester United in 2009 with a win over Brighton.
While he admitted there were so many variables that could cause the title to swing towards the Reds, including "one mistake of our side, one incredible performance from the opponent, or one mistake from the referee", the Spaniard urged his team to "be more precise in all the aspects and try to win the game".
Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference on Friday: "It's a privilege. We are in this position because we won a lot of games, 13 in a row, we have to win one more and that is what we have to do."

Pochettino 'happy' there's less focus on Spurs
LONDON • Speculation may be the bane of many clubs, leaving players and staff unsettled. But, for Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, the rumours validate his hard work and mean that he is doing something right.
Fresh talk about his future emerged this week following the club's qualification for the knockout stage of the Champions League, with reports suggesting the Londoners are bracing themselves for interest from Manchester United and Real Madrid.
But the Argentinian, who signed a five-year contract with Spurs in May, feels the gossip "does not upset or bore him", saying: "I prefer that newspapers talk about things like this than talk about, 'Tottenham is going to sack me', or 'People are tired of me', or 'We are in a difficult situation'.
"Of course, if I choose one situation, I choose this one."
Pochettino is also happy for Spurs to go under the radar as they prepare to welcome Burnley in the Premier League today.
Dark horses Spurs are third in the league, six points adrift of leaders Liverpool, and that gap could be narrowed this weekend should Spurs manage to capitalise on any slip-up by the Reds, who will play Manchester United at home.
Ahead of their match with the Clarets at Wembley, he said: "We are there (in the table) - we are in a good position, of course.

"I am happy with the perception today, when the perception from the media is only Manchester City and Liverpool, and not us."
However, having given it their all in their Champions League tie at Barcelona in midweek, Pochettino warned the opposition were ready to take advantage of any tired legs, calling Burnley a "tough game".
"We are playing for three very important points, to be in the Premier League top four - for me, it is a massive motivation," he added.
"(Playing) every three days is always tough but we need to try to find the way to approach the game in the best condition."
With regular right-backs Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier still injured, Kyle Walker-Peters, who endured a torrid night at the Nou Camp, is expected to be given the nod again.
Fellow defenders Juan Foyth and Davinson Sanchez will also miss the game through injury.

Madrid set to be Hazard's new home

Madrid set to be Hazard's new home

BAKU • Eden Hazard helped make it a night to celebrate for Chelsea in Baku, but the Belgian's confirmation that it was almost certainly his last game for the club opened the way to a summer of uncertainty at Stamford Bridge.
Hazard scored twice, including a penalty, and set up another goal for Pedro Rodriguez after Olivier Giroud had set Chelsea on their way to an emphatic 4-1 win over London rivals Arsenal in the Europa League final in Azerbaijan on Wednesday.
Maurizio Sarri's side will be back in the Champions League next season, by which time Hazard looks set to be wearing a Real Madrid shirt.
"I have made my decision already and now I'm waiting on both clubs. I think it is a goodbye but, in football, you never know," the forward told BT Sport after the game.
The 28-year-old has long been linked with Real and all signs point towards a transfer that could be worth €100 million (S$153.7 million).
"My dream was to play in the Premier League and I have done that, so maybe now it is the time for a new challenge," added Hazard, who has won two Premier League titles, one FA Cup and a League Cup as well as a second Europa League trophy in his seven-year spell with the Blues.
Chelsea have known this moment was coming, but it is a huge concern for a club who are facing a Fifa-imposed ban on signing players in the next two transfer windows.
Sarri can celebrate, for now. This was the Chelsea manager's first major trophy in management at the age of 60, at the end of a season in which he also steered Chelsea to third place in the league, but it remains to be seen if the Italian will stick around for a second season.

Manager Maurizio Sarri, who lifted his first major trophy in management at the age of 60. PHOTO: REUTERS

He has struggled to win over supporters and has been strongly linked with a move to Juventus.
"I have to speak to my club tomorrow," he admitted. "We need to know what the club can do for me, what I can do better for the club. Then we will decide. I love the Premier League, so I am happy."

  • 39

Matches Maurizio Sarri has won with Chelsea in all competitions this term. Only Jose Mourinho has won more in his first season in charge of the Blues (42 wins in 2004-05).

TIME TO MOVE ON
I have made my decision already and now I'm waiting on both clubs. I think it is a goodbye but, in football, you never know. My dream was to play in the Premier League and I have done that, so maybe now it is the time for a new challenge.
EDEN HAZARD, after helping Chelsea win the Europa League title on Wednesday.

Should Sarri also leave, Chelsea will probably not miss him as much as they will miss Hazard.
There have been times during the season when the Belgian appeared to be going through the motions, as if his heart and mind were already in Spain, but his contribution over the final months has been immense.
In a team that looked low on confidence, struggling to adapt to Sarri's methods, he was so often the creative inspiration, scoring 21 goals and providing 17 assists.
It seemed to come to him so naturally on Wednesday night. This was Hazard playing his own game, not trying to overcompensate as players sometimes do when their ego tells them that this is their stage.
Those little shimmies, the change of pace, that little roulette turn in the first half and the way he drifted away from Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka in the second.
The downside in Baku was that there were not many fans to celebrate his genius - thousands of empty seats contributed to a muted atmosphere.
Many Chelsea and Arsenal fans, probably half their 12,000 combined allocation, stayed away, unable to afford the money or time to make the expensive and inaccessible 9,000km round trip.
For those who made it, they arrived only to realise that the pitch was a fair distance away from the stands.
"You travel all that way to watch a European final and, when you sit in your seat, you're not much closer to the pitch than when you left home," tweeted BT Sports pundit Gary Lineker.
For the fans who tuned in to the live broadcast from home, they were also at times treated to camera angles that were so high that player numbers could not be seen.
But, for all the controversies, the night deservedly was Chelsea's.
No other team have gone through an Europa League campaign this century without losing a game and they did that despite all the doubts surrounding their management and associated issues on and off the pitch.

Football: Crocked Kane won't change Pochettino's plans
LONDON • Harry Kane's ankle injury that will sideline him until March was tough to take but has not affected the club's January transfer window plans, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino told Sky Sports on Wednesday.
The striker damaged left ankle ligaments during the 1-0 Premier League loss to Manchester United at Wembley last Sunday and will be out for at least six weeks.
Spurs are already without forward Son Heung-min, who left after the United game to play for South Korea at the Asian Cup which runs until the Feb 1 final.
But France midfielder Moussa Sissoko, who injured his groin before half-time in the United defeat, should be fit for the League Cup semi-final second leg at Chelsea next Thursday. Spurs lead 1-0 from the first game at Wembley.
Pochettino said it was "tough" to be without "one of the best strikers in the world" but added that it could be an opportunity for the academy players.
He said: "We were always open to improve with Harry in (good) condition or not, but we know it is going to be difficult to add the player we want. It didn't change our mind, it's a very good opportunity for players to play more, to step up. I'm sure it's going to be a good opportunity for young players from the academy to show their quality."
He has brought several youngsters into the first team squad, with midfielder Oliver Skipp and Argentinian defender Juan Foyth already featuring this season. But he is likely to rely on the experienced Fernando Llorente as a replacement for Kane, while speedy Brazilian forward Lucas Moura should be back from injury soon.
"We know what it means to have Harry Kane fit, but we have a squad and (his absence) can't be an excuse," Pochettino said, ahead of the Premier League match at Fulham on Sunday. "We need to play with the same mentality - thinking we can beat any team."
Meanwhile, midfielder Mousa Dembele joined Guangzhou R&F yesterday on a three-year deal. The Belgian international, 31, will cost the Chinese Super League club about €12 million (S$18.55 million).

Pogba set to torment Gunners once again

Pogba set to torment Gunners once again

Manchester United may have won in Paris without their most famous Parisian, but capital occasions seem to bring the best out of their most expensive player.
They have a 100 per cent record in London in 2019. Paul Pogba has three goals and three assists in what seems like United's second home.
Their most famous player returns after suspension and a famous result, ready to take his place in the makeshift midfield of rookies and a supposed misfit, in Fred.
Yet the same may have been said of Pogba three months ago. Confined to a bit-part role at the end of Jose Mourinho's reign, he is now an indictment of the sacked Portuguese.
Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he has looked a World Cup winner and an £89 million (S$156 million) player. He has been ubiquitous, shedding his status as an enigma to deliver consistency and productivity.
Even while missing a penalty and picking up a red card, he has scored nine times and registered seven assists. Pogba has provided 16 goals in 15 games.
More, really. When United won at the Emirates Stadium in the FA Cup in January, Anthony Martial completed the scoring when Petr Cech had parried Pogba's shot.
The Frenchman had intercepted in his own half and powered forward: it showcased the verticality and directness that suits Pogba, but also the counter-attacking game plan United's last two managers have used in 3-1 wins at Arsenal.
They have had wildly different endings for Pogba. The 25-year-old also set up United's third goal, scored by Jesse Lingard, during an influential display in 2017 but was then sent off for a studs-up challenge on Hector Bellerin.
He has hugged the spotlight in home games against the Gunners, too: last season, he opened the scoring in Arsene Wenger's final encounter with United.
In November, a 15-minute cameo in a 2-2 draw proved his final league appearance under Mourinho; he was sent on for Marouane Fellaini and left unused in the Portuguese's final two domestic fixtures.
"I was in the shadows," Pogba said in January. His relationship with Mourinho broke down.
In contrast, Solskjaer has embraced his exuberance and encouraged a larger-than-life character.
In August, when few thought he could become United manager, Solskjaer had said he would build a team around Pogba. Given the opportunity, he has been true to his word.
He has given him defensive cover, finding his best role either in a trio or on the left of a diamond, but allowed him to surge forward.
He has been allowed to try the audacious. He is having more shots - 48 during Solskjaer's reign - but has actually showed positional discipline and greater productivity while looking liberated.
The unlikely lads showed in Paris that Pogba certainly isn't a one-man midfield, but a talisman still feels much more than just one man.

Sterling gives, Pep cheers

Sterling gives, Pep cheers

LONDON • Despite a "money grabber" reputation that was borne out of the way he engineered his acrimonious transfer from Liverpool to Manchester City in 2015, Raheem Sterling has since emerged as one of football's good guys.
Off the pitch, the England forward is increasingly being known for his charity work with organisations like Football Beyond Borders and supporting movements to help victims of the Grenfell Tower fire, while using his considerable social media presence to help the underprivileged.
On Thursday, the 24-year-old further burnished his altruistic credentials after buying 550 tickets for students of his former school, Copland Community, to catch City's FA Cup semi-final against Brighton at Wembley today.
Having spent his formative years in the vicinity of Wembley after moving from Jamaica at the age of five, Sterling, who also met the students the same day, said it represented "a great opportunity to give back to the community that helped me get to where I am".
He added: "I grew up right next door to the stadium and would dream of one day playing in a Cup final or even representing my country there. To now be able to play there myself is an honour.

ARCH IN SIGHT
When I was young, it was usual to see the final of the FA Cup over the Premier League games, the tradition at old Wembley. It will be nice for me, personally, and the players as well.
PEP GUARDIOLA, Manchester City manager, on the semi-final clash against Brighton at Wembley today.

"It is great to be able to give these students the chance to watch a game at Wembley."
Rebecca Curtis, the principal of his former school, now known as Ark Elvin Academy, was blown away by his gesture.
She said: "To know he still thinks about the community he came from despite how his life has changed is really powerful for us.
"The vast majority of our pupils have never been inside Wembley, let alone seen such a big game with one of our old boys playing."
So it puzzles City manager Pep Guardiola when Sterling, who was allegedly the subject of racist abuse earlier in the season at Chelsea and when England played Montenegro away in their Euro 2020 qualifier during the recent international break, continues to draw flak.
Calling it an "incredible gesture", he said at his pre-match press conference yesterday: "This makes a better society for everyone. Football players are human beings, we live all together and these kind of gestures dignify who he is."
Turning his attention towards the Seagulls, the Spaniard admitted that while City "are still young in terms of a lot of titles", he had set his team, who are still on course for the quadruple, "the target to win and be better".
He told reporters: "When I was young, it was usual to see the final of the FA Cup over the Premier League games, the tradition at old Wembley. It will be nice for me, personally, and the players as well. A challenge to get another (trophy) and we will try."
The 48-year-old also revealed mixed news over his likely first XI selection against Chris Hughton's men after confirming defender Oleksandr Zinchenko would be out for "10 to 12 days".
However, there was a better outcome for Guardiola in the striking department after Sergio Aguero, the league's top scorer on 19 goals, was passed "almost fit and will travel".
He also hinted that Benjamin Mendy could make only his second City appearance since undergoing meniscus surgery last November, as "he has been training for a week".

Football: Hung jury for Hillsborough tragedy police chief accused of involuntary manslaughter, retrial likely

LONDON (AFP) - The police commander at the Hillsborough football stadium disaster faces a retrial after a jury on Wednesday (April 3) - failed to reach a verdict over his role in the deaths of 95 Liverpool fans.
Nearly 30 years to the day after the tragedy in the northern city of Sheffield, the judge in the trial of retired chief superintendent David Duckenfield discharged jurors who could not decide on 95 counts of gross negligence manslaughter.
The match-day police chief had pleaded not guilty at the 10-week trial to culpability for the fatal crush at an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough on April 15, 1989.
There is no manslaughter charge over the death of supporter Anthony Bland, as he died almost four years later and under the law in 1989 it is now "out of time" to be prosecuted.
However, the jurors at Preston Crown Court in north-west England did convict a former Sheffield Wednesday club official for failing to renew the stadium's safety certificate.
The jury, comprising six men and six women, had entered their eighth day of deliberations when they found Graham Mackrell, 69, guilty.
But they remained deadlocked over 74-year-old Duckenfield.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), England's state prosecutors, has indicated it will seek his retrial.
In court it alleged Duckenfield had the "ultimate responsibility" for allowing the crush to occur.
But the defence argued the case was "breathtakingly unfair" and said the defendant had "tried to do the right thing".
Dozens of relatives of the victims who had gathered in Liverpool - 40km away - gasped as the jury foreman told the court they could not reach a unanimous decision on Duckenfield.
There were cheers as the guilty verdict for Mackrell was announced.
Victims' families fought a long campaign for events surrounding the disaster to be re-investigated, with the CPS announcing the decision to press charges in June 2017.
The crush was Britain's worst sports stadium tragedy.
The final memorial at Liverpool's Anfield stadium for the victims was held in 2016, 27 years to the day since the disaster took place.
Families of the deceased unanimously agreed the service would be the last public event at Anfield in memory of the supporters who died.

Gunners must do better away: Emery

Gunners must do better away: Emery
LONDON • Unai Emery believes Arsenal's major problem on their travels has been inside the minds of his players.
The Gunners have failed to win outside the Emirates Stadium since Nov 25 - losing four and drawing two of their past six Premier League away games to slip to sixth in the table - and he knows the rot has to stop at Huddersfield today.
The Spaniard did not quite accuse his players of complacency, but he did admit that they look better when they "prepare the matches by thinking it's going to be very difficult".
Despite Huddersfield being bottom of the league, having taken only one point from an available 36, Emery expects the Terriers - now under the management of German Jan Siewert - to press high rather than defend deep.
"We can have better balance (in performances) when we prepare by thinking it's going to be very difficult," Emery said.
"I spoke with the players that we need to think this match is very important for us.
"Every player needs to be ready, be focused and be thinking we need to win this match.
"We must impose ourselves from the first minute and throughout the 90 minutes, but first is the mentality.
"We know that defensively we need to do better. We have to continue in our way with passion and also stay calm."
Emery is adamant that the recent criticism of his stewardship had not affected him.
"My first critic is always myself," he said. "I work over the criticism of me because I know that work in the present can change our way.
"We have the possibility and the opportunity to get into the top four, but we know it's not easy.
"One month ago, we were in the same situation. We are strong at home, but we need to do better away."
Emery is hoping January loan signing Denis Suarez can make a bigger impact, following a poor debut in the 3-1 loss to his former club Manchester City last week.
"This week, he worked Monday alone here with our coaches and he's working with a different adaptation, better than last week," said Emery.
"I hope he's continuing to improve every day. Then he can show in the next matches how he can help us, better than in the first match against Manchester City."

7-0 rout proves 'teen' Citizens maturing fast

7-0 rout proves 'teen' Citizens maturing fast
LONDON • Pep Guardiola may have described his Manchester City side as Champions League "teenagers" in the build-up, but the 7-0 rout of Schalke in the second leg of their last-16 tie on Tuesday is a clear indication of their growing maturity.
The resounding 10-2 aggregate win - the biggest achieved in the Champions League by an English club - puts the Citizens among the favourites when the last-eight draw is made tomorrow.
And, after recording their 61st goal in all competitions this year, the Spaniard declared his side's intention to "try for the second time in our history to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League".
He said: "We are delighted to be in the quarter-finals. The last 15 minutes and the second half we were incredibly good, quick and dynamic.
"I know Schalke are in a tough period but, even in that situation, you have to do your job.
"I'm not going to say we are not going to fight (for a maiden Champions League title). As a club, we are like a teenager team because the best success... is one semi-final and two quarter-finals.
"You can't compare us to Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Liverpool or Juventus. They have how many?
"But the teenagers have desire and are not scared. This competition is incredibly tough. We will see how far we can get. I've won two (Champions Leagues) but I've lost seven. All I can say is we will try and, next season, we will try again."
In their seven previous Champions League campaigns, City have reached the last four only once but, having won 18 of their past 19 matches in all competitions, the momentum could carry them to the June 1 final in Madrid.
Leroy Sane again scored against his former club as he became the first player to make three assists in a knockout game since Franck Ribery in March 2012.
A brace by Sergio Aguero and strikes by Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, and substitutes Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus further contributed to the heaviest loss suffered by a German team in the competition's history.
But Guardiola felt it was far from Sane's best display, insisting the 23-year-old "wasn't aggressive enough", before warning City's future opponents that the winger's potential had yet to be fulfilled as "he is young".

Football: Franck Ribery angrily defends his golden steak on social media

BERLIN (AFP) - Franck Ribery appeared to respond to social media criticism of his eating a gold-coated steak with abusive posts on Instagram and Twitter on Saturday (Jan 5).
On Thursday, the 35-year-old France and Bayern Munich star had posted a video of a visit to a steak house owned by celebrity Turkish restauranteur Salt Bae and rubbing his hands before tucking into a huge chop coated in gold.
That ostentatious luxury drew ferocious criticism.
The messages on Ribery's official accounts were an angry response.
"Let's start with the envious, the angry, surely born because of a broken condom," read the first of the posts on Ribery's Twitter account.
"F*** your mothers, your grandmothers and your whole family tree," wrote Ribery, having taken care to sanitise the French word "n*quez".
"I owe you nothing, my success is above all thanks to God," the post continued.
"To me, to my relatives and to those who believed in me, for the others, you were only pebbles in my socks."

The second message castigated "pseudo-journalists" who are always "negative".
The third was accompanied by a photo of a French celebrity journalist, and contained the quote: "I do what I want with my money."
German tabloid Bild reported that the meal was in Dubai where Salt Bae owns the Nusr-Et restaurant.
Bayern, where Ribery is reportedly in his last season, are holding a winter training camp in Qatar.
Golden steak is one of Salt Bae's signature dishes, a 400g ingot cut of sirloin wrapped with golden leaves that costs a whopping 1,250 dirhams (S$460).
