Football: Late Alonso header gives Chelsea win in Prague

PRAGUE (REUTERS) - A late header by defender Marcos Alonso and Kepa Arrizabalaga's goalkeeping heroics helped Chelsea beat a stubborn Slavia Prague 1-0 in their Europa League quarter-final, first leg on Thursday (April 11).
Spaniard Alonso broke the deadlock for the west London side in the 86th minute when he sneaked behind two defenders to connect with Willian's cross and score what proved to be the winner in the first competitive meeting between the two sides.
"I'm very happy with the result and also with the performance, because at this moment we are able to suffer, in the past we were not," Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri told reporters.
"In the past, when we were in trouble, we conceded immediately a goal, now we did not concede anything."
Sarri made seven changes from the team that beat West Ham United 2-0 in the Premier League on Monday, with talisman Eden Hazard coming off the bench for the last half an hour.
Willian's fierce shot hit the bar in the first half before the hosts had a chance to open the scoring on the counter in the 69th minute when Ibrahim Traore drive into the Chelsea box and struck a shot that was superbly punched away by Kepa.
The Spanish goalkeeper then kept out left-back Jan Boril's close-range shot in the 80th minute.
Alonso's goal gave the Blues a vital away goal as they put behind them bitter memories of the stadium where they lost the 2013 Super Cup to Bayern Munich in a penalty shootout.
Slavia defender Simon Deli said: "It's disappointing because we did very well and in the last minutes we conceded this kind of goal. Of course, it's difficult for us, but it's football.
"Now we'll prepare for our next game - the derby - and then against Chelsea in London," he added referring to the Czech league leaders' game against third-placed Sparta on Sunday.

Football: Deulofeu hat-trick fires Watford to 5-1 win at Cardiff

LONDON (REUTERS) - Spaniard Gerard Deulofeu bagged a hat-trick as Watford hammered lowly Cardiff City 5-1 on Friday (Feb 22) to move up to seventh place in the Premier League.
Deulofeu put Javi Gracia's side ahead in the 18th minute after a mistake from Cardiff defender Bruno Manga but it was after the break when Watford ran away with the game.
Deulofeu made it 2-0 with a clinical finish after a swift break in the 61st minute and the former Barcelona and Everton winger completed his hat-trick after more poor defending from Neil Warnock's side.
Deulofeu then turned creator, teeing up Troy Deeney for a simple tap-in as Watford romped into a four-goal advantage.
Cardiff, who are 17th and could fall back into the bottom three after this weekend's games, pulled a goal back through defender Sol Bamba but Watford added further punishment with Deeney's second in stoppage time.

Football: FA charges Emery over water bottle kicked into crowd

LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal manager Unai Emery has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association after kicking a water bottle into the crowd during the 1-1 Premier League draw at Brighton on Wednesday (Dec 26).
A Football Association spokesman said on Thursday: "Arsenal manager Unai Emery has been charged following the game against Brighton yesterday (Dec 26, 2018).
"It is alleged his action of kicking a water bottle during the fixture amounts to improper conduct. He has until 6pm (1800 GMT) on Jan 2, 2019 to respond to the charge," the FA spokesman added.
Spanish boss Emery went to speak to the home supporter nearest where the bottle landed immediately after the incident and again at full-time at the Amex Stadium.
Emery, speaking earlier Thursday before the FA's announcement and ahead of Arsenal's trip to league leaders Liverpool this weekend, said he hoped his apology would draw a line under the incident.
"I say yesterday my apologies, I kicked the bottle in frustration but not for the supporter, I kicked for me and it went near to the supporter and I said to them my apologies. There is not another communication.
"I repeat today my apologies for my individual action but I kick the bottle because it is near me, but not because it is my intention."
Emery, while hoping the matter was done and dusted, added he would respect any decision taken by the FA.
"I hope so, yes," he replied when asked whether his apology should close the book on the incident.
"But I have to respect the decision because it is a circumstance of my action but not another intention from me with the supporter. I say to them my apology," the 47-year-old added.

Football: Cardiff keep up the fight with win over Hammers

(REUTERS) - Relegation-threatened Cardiff City earned three vital points with a 2-0 win over West Ham on Saturday (March 9), moving them within two points of 17th placed Burnley.
Cardiff got off to a flying start, taking the lead in the fourth minute when Spaniard Victor Camarasa broke from midfield and fed Joseph Murphy whose low cross from the right was turned in at the near post by Junior Hoilett.
Neil Warnock's side, who have just Fulham and Huddersfield below them, had plenty of opportunities to extend their lead in the first half against an out-of-sorts West Ham but went in at the break with just a single goal advantage.
The Hammers, who had 70 per cent possession, brought on Marko Arnautovic for a below-par Felipe Anderson at the interval as Manuel Pellegrini looked to add some life to his attack.
But seven minutes after the restart the decisive second came when Hoilett got past Ryan Fredericks and his cross was headed back across goal by Josh Murphy for Camarasa to turn it on from close range.
All West Ham had to show for their possession was a long range effort from midfielder Declan Rice which struck the Cardiff post.
The defeat was the fifth in the last six away games for West Ham who sit in ninth place.
"If I'm honest, they fully deserved it - we weren't good enough today," said Hammers defender Aaron Cresswell.
"We didn't start well and the crowd were up for it. We knew it would be tough and it certainly was today," he added.
Cardiff, in 18th spot, move to 28 points while Burnley, on 30 points, face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
Midfielder Harry Arter said the team's work-rate and spirit had driven them to victory.
"We outworked them and we had a lot of quality on the ball. We raised our level of performance today. We put things right on the pitch after a hard week in training," he said.
"Everything we've done this season has been fighting until the end until the last three games. It's always been a united dressing room. There's been no rift in this squad."

Spurs living the European dream

LONDON • Tottenham's casualty list makes for grim reading.
Harry Kane, Erik Lamela and Harry Winks and Serge Aurier are all injured. There are doubts over Moussa Sissoko and Jan Vertonghen. And, crucially, Son Heung-min is suspended.
But, ahead of the first leg of their Champions League semi-final with Ajax today, Mauricio Pochettino believes his injury-hit squad can "go to infinity and beyond".
Having upset the odds to end Manchester City's quest for an unprecedented quadruple, the Spurs manager insisted at his pre-match press conference yesterday that their strength as a collective can overcome Ajax's talented group of rising stars at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Argentinian, who has led the north London club to the last four of the Champions League for the first time, is relishing being among European football's elite after cracking rarefied territory.
He said: "To be in a Champions League semi-final is something I dreamed about. You need to settle your dreams.
"The chance to play a semi-final for Tottenham has not happened often (their last appearance at this stage was in the 1962 European Cup).

RARING TO GO
To be in a Champions League semi-final is something I dreamed about. You need to settle your dreams...
It is impossible to be tired, impossible to not be excited to play. I am sure there is no doubt we will have the energy for 90 minutes.
MAURICIO POCHETTINO, Tottenham manager, on preparing his side for their semi-final.

"We are in a circumstance that is not going to change and we must be ready.
"It is impossible to be tired, impossible to not be excited to play. I am sure there is no doubt we will have the energy for 90 minutes."
However, while Pochettino's stretched team were slipping to a sixth defeat in their last 10 Premier League games to West Ham on Saturday, surrendering their unbeaten record at their new ground, Ajax have had a full week to rest as the Dutch league calendar for the weekend was postponed to allow them extra time to prepare.
While Son's ban means Pochettino is robbed of another goal threat, already diminished through Kane's absence, he remains confident their teamwork can compensate for a perceived lack of firepower.
The 47-year-old said: "The point is that we arrive where we are now because we were a team and we are going to be a team.
"I don't care who is going to score. Always, it's an issue to not have all the players fit but, in front of any name, was the team, the collective."
Pochettino, though, will be keenly aware Ajax, who are also enjoying their own footballing renaissance with their first semi-final appearance in 22 years, "have no fear of anyone".
The Dutch outfit are gunning for the treble - last achieved by the 1972 Johan Cryuff-led team - they top the Eredivisie table on goal difference from PSV Eindhoven and play Willem II in next month's Dutch Cup final.
Yet the Champions League remains their main "objective" as Erik ten Hag's players want to write themselves into the club's folklore before the team get inevitably broken up in the summer.
Although Ajax's remarkable progression from the qualifying rounds has come at a price - Frenkie de Jong has agreed a summer blockbuster move to Barcelona - while captain Matthijs de Ligt, Hakim Ziyech and David Neres are set to follow him out of the exit door, Andre Onana feels lifting their fifth European Cup and their first since 1995 would be the perfect send-off.
The Cameroon international, himself a Barcelona target, told Agence France-Presse: "Not just for the goal in and of itself, but for us, because after this season, there will be a lot of players who will leave.
"It is important for us to do something big. If that means winning the treble, that will be simply beautiful."

Football: Cardiff return a reminder of the challenge facing Man Utd caretaker boss Solskjaer

CARDIFF (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first test as Manchester United's caretaker manager will come in familiar surroundings as the Norwegian returns to Cardiff City on Saturday (Dec 22), hoping to fare better than he did during an ill-fated nine-month spell with the Welsh side in 2014.
Solskjaer's appointment was described as designed to put a smile back on the face of everyone at the club after the confrontational end to Jose Mourinho's two-and-a-half years in charge.
The new man's first act on his return to the club's Carrington training ground was reportedly to gift a bar of Norwegian chocolate to the club's long-serving receptionist - a gesture of the human qualities United know they are getting.
"The smiling assassin sums him up," former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, who played with Solskjaer, told the BBC. "He's a lovely fella but Ole will let people know if he's not happy with them." The best way for him to lighten to mood quickly will be with results on the pitch.
A 3-1 defeat by Liverpool last weekend left United 19 points off the league leaders and 11 points adrift of the top four, but Solskjaer can look forward to a relatively forgiving fixture list over the festive period.
After visiting the Cardiff City Stadium, the Red Devils host Huddersfield and Bournemouth before travelling to Newcastle on January 2.
Solskjaer's presence rekindles memories of United's golden age, but also serves as a stark reminder of how far the club have fallen since the retirement of Alex Ferguson in 2013.

In 11 seasons under Ferguson as a predatory striker, Solskjaer scored 126 goals, including the one that famously won the Champions League final in 1999 as part of a treble of major trophies.
Yet, doubts remain over whether Solskjaer's appointment as caretaker boss until the end of the season is based too strongly on sentimentality than someone with the right mix of motivational and tactical prowess to get United not only competing again in the Premier League, but who can push Paris Saint-Germain in a challenging Champions League last-16 tie.
His time at Cardiff that resulted in just three wins in 18 Premier League games, relegation and being sacked early the next season after a poor start in the Championship does not offer much cause for optimism.
But two spells in charge of Molde in his homeland have been far more successful and Solskjaer also started his managerial career working as United's reserve coach, where he oversaw Paul Pogba among others.
The French World Cup winner's frosty relationship with Mourinho was a major factor in the Portuguese's failure to build on winning the League Cup and Europa League in his first season at Old Trafford.
Pogba has started United's last three Premier League games on the bench, but is expected to return to the starting XI after Solskjaer claimed earlier this year he would "build the team around him".
Solskjaer must also find the right defence to offer David de Gea more protection. The Spaniard has conceded more goals in the Premier League this season (29) in 17 games than the whole of the previous campaign as Mourinho persistently changed his backline to no effect.
In attacking areas, Mourinho's dismissal could also provide a fresh start for Juan Mata and Anthony Martial, while £50 million (S$86.7 million) summer recruit Fred, who did not even make the bench at Anfield last weekend, may now be given the chance to flourish.

They suffered a surprise 3-2 home loss to Crystal Palace last weekend before a 3-1 defeat at Wolves on Wednesday to leave the Gunners fifth in the table, a point behind Chelsea (67 points) in the final Champions League qualification spot with three games left.
Emery conceded he has had to lift his squad before heading to the King Power Stadium today.
"The first target is to recover our confidence," he said at his pre-match press conference.
"We can build on this confidence each minute, each hour, each day, each week - and above all we're training and we're looking for a big performance for the three points."
Arsenal, who play Valencia in the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday, have been impressive at home this season. But their away form has been poor, with only six wins in 17.
"If we think negatively with the last two matches, we can't think positively about the (away) games we won against Napoli and Watford," added Emery of the matches before their two defeats. "Each match is a new history, a new test."
After Leicester, Arsenal host Brighton before finishing the season with a trip to Burnley on May 12 as they seek to qualify for the Champions League after a two-year absence.
Arsenal top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with 19 goals, could be back today after missing the Wolves game with a sinus issue.
Emery also praised Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers, who has overseen a turnaround since his appointment in late February - 13 points from four wins, one draw and two losses.
Before his arrival, in the same number of games, they managed only one win, one draw and five defeats.
"This coach has given them a new idea, a new energy and a new style," said Emery. "He hasn't changed the players a lot but used a different system. He's doing important things in the set pieces. They feel good now with confidence."

GABRIEL QUAK (WARRIORS FC)

The first Singaporean to score in Thai League 1, Gabriel recorded four goals and one assist in 24 games for Navy in 2018.
Despite their eventual relegation, Quak had done enough to not just become a fan favourite but also earn a Lions recall. Rediscovering his creative abilities and adding a defensive dimension to his game, the fleet-footed winger was one of the bright sparks in Fandi Ahmad's national team.
While Quak was released by Navy, there was interest from other Thai clubs, as well as Indonesia's Barito Putera. But he had already set his mind on returning home to nine-time champions Warriors FC, who he had actually signed for last season before Navy came in.
He said: "I thought about playing in the Singapore Premier League when I found out my wife was expecting our second child.
"I already missed out on a lot of my firstborn's childhood moments because I was in Thailand and these are the things money can't buy.
"I hope to continue scoring and creating goals for my new team but the main aim is to add one more star to the Warriors crest. We want to take the club back to the top and make it to the AFC Champions League qualifiers or AFC Cup."

SHAWAL ANUAR (GEYLANG INTERNATIONAL)

A poster boy for the National Football League, Shawal Anuar made the leap to join Geylang International's professional ranks in 2014 and never looked back.
Despite his waifish 1.68m, 58kg frame, the 27-year-old winger has tormented defences with his speed and goal sense. In just 77 league games, he scored 22 times for the Eagles, and he also took just two international appearances to grab his first goal for Singapore.
Both club and country missed him dearly when Shawal tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a 3-1 league win over Young Lions last July, which ruled him out for the rest of the season as well as the AFF Suzuki Cup.
Eager to make his return, Shawal said: "I was really sad to miss out on the Suzuki Cup, but now I'm focused on making a full recovery and coming back stronger.

"I had 17 league goals in the past two seasons and I want to score more this season. Geylang have a really balanced team this season, we have bonded well pre-season and we are feeling really positive about the new season."

STIPE PLAZIBAT (HOUGANG UNITED)

The last time Stipe Plazibat played in Singapore, he scored 37 goals in 39 games for Home United in all competitions in the 2017 season.
It earned him a move to Thailand in 2018, but it ended up being his most turbulent season yet as Bangkok Glass de-registered him just two days before the transfer window closed. Mutual termination came only in June and he returned to Croatia to play for NK Solin in the second division.
The 29-year-old striker is no stranger to Hougang fans as the Cheetahs were the first Singapore team he signed for in 2016, when he scored 16 league goals.
He said: "It feels like homecoming, and also unfinished business because I know many people and places here and I feel secure, and I have very good chemistry on and off the field with players like Faris Ramli, but I also really want to win something here.
"My target this year is team success because in the past I scored many goals but didn't win anything. I always aim to score in every game, but the most important thing is to feel that my conscience is clear after I have done everything I could on the pitch."

I do agree and have said so in many posts, the lack of control over the games is a major cause of our defensive problems. But even after that, individually the back line is not good enough. 1 vs 1, playing from the back, tracking runners, tackling the ball off the opp or generally dealing with technical players…etc All are glaring problems.

Football: Germany unbeaten in 13 matches after edging out China 1-0 in Women's World Cup

RENNES (REUTERS) - Germany's teenage midfielder Giulia Gwinn scored a second-half winner as the two-time world champions stormed past China 1-0 on Saturday (June 8) to kick off their Women's World Cup campaign.
The 19-year-old fired in from the edge of the box in the 66th minute to break stiff Chinese resistance in the Group B encounter.
China had almost stunned the favourites against the run of play in the first half when Yang Li was sent through after a German error but her shot was cleared when she looked certain to score.
Carolin Simon hit the woodwork with a cross minutes later but Germany's early dominance faded as the Chinese gained in confidence.
China earned another golden chance from a quick break, hitting the post in the 44th minute before Germany goalkeeper Almuth Schult came to the rescue.
Gwinn then found just enough space in a crowded Chinese defence to fire home a cleanly-struck shot past goalkeeper Peng Shimeng to settle the game.
Germany are now unbeaten in their last 13 matches, the longest run of any team taking part in the tournament in France.
They next take on Spain on Wednesday, while China play South Africa on Thursday.

Wonder strike puts city in good Kompany

Wonder strike puts city in good Kompany

LONDON • Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany said he ignored calls "not to shoot" from teammates as he fired in from long range to earn his side a crucial 1-0 Premier League win over Leicester City on Monday.
With Liverpool having reclaimed the top spot in the standings after their 3-2 win at Newcastle United last Saturday, City looked nervy as they reached the hour mark at the Etihad without scoring a goal.
The Belgium defender then came to the rescue with a stunning strike into the top corner in the 70th minute to score his first goal of the season and his first-ever from outside the box in the Premier League, to win the match for City.
After the victory, which put City on 95 points and one ahead of Liverpool after the penultimate match of the season, cameras caught striker Sergio Aguero jokingly telling his skipper: "I tell you no shoot! No! No!"
Kompany was undeterred.
"I haven't scored this season, but I always feel in big moments I can do something," he said.
"Headers, anything. There was a little bit of frustration today. I could hear people saying, 'Don't shoot'. It annoyed me. I've not come this far in my career to be told when I can and can't shoot.
"I've had 15 years of top-level midfielders telling me not to shoot, but I always told them one day I am going to have a shot from outside the box and I'm going to score a goal."
Forward Raheem Sterling was one of those who had his doubts.

SELF-BELIEF
I've had 15 years of top-level midfielders telling me not to shoot, but I always told them one day I am going to have a shot from outside the box and I'm going to score a goal.
VINCENT KOMPANY, Manchester City captain, on proving his doubters wrong about his ability to score from outside the box.

"My face screaming 'Noooo Vinny why u do this' so hard. what a hit boi!!! Captain Incredible," he wrote on Twitter.
City manager Pep Guardiola also praised Kompany for his wonder goal, saying: "Sometimes, you need a goal like Vinnie's today."
It was certainly a goal worthy of settling the Premier League title race this season. What happened in the 70th minute will long be remembered by City fans, and may haunt Liverpool for some time to come.
Leicester had been defending so strongly, with Wilfred Ndidi immense in shielding his back four, yet City never betrayed any nerves. They kept pouring forward, with the defenders joining the attack, too.
When Aymeric Laporte laid the ball off towards his central-defensive partner 30m out, Kompany took a touch and decided to push on, encouraged by Leicester's momentary decision to back off.
The Belgian took another touch and then connected powerfully with a strike that burned its way through the chilly Manchester air, flying in high past the diving goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
City had known Leicester would be organised and determined. Brendan Rodgers' side played deep, with even the lone striker Jamie Vardy dropping back into Leicester's defensive third at times.
The look of sheer joy on Bernardo Silva's face as he ran towards Kompany summed up City's gritty win.
Guardiola was also asked about the significance of Kompany being on the pitch at the end with his children and if it signalled the last home game of an 11-year City career.
"Kompany has been here for more than 10 years and he has helped with an incredible generation of players," the Spaniard said.
"With other players like (Joe) Hart and (Pablo) Zabaleta, they created this club. This club is what it is because of people like Vincent.
"We spoke with him and his agent. We are going to take a beer together (at the end of the season) and decide what is best."
City have one hand on the Premier League trophy but Guardiola hit back at Liverpool, claiming that the Reds are playing "without pressure".
Ahead of Sunday's final-day fixture at Brighton, he suggested that the pressure has been weighing heavier on the shoulders of his players despite both teams going neck and neck in the title race.
"Liverpool play without pressure because they know it is not in their hands. It is easy," he said. "We have the pressure."

Football: Manager Maurizio Sarri to discuss Chelsea future after Europa League final

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri plans showdown talks with the club's hierarchy after next week's Europa League final to see if they want him to remain in charge next season.
The Italian's side recovered from a mid-season slump in time to secure Champions League football next season via a third-placed finish in the English Premier League, and could end the season with a trophy when they face Arsenal in Baku on May 29.
However, Sarri's style of football has not been universally embraced by the Chelsea fans during his first season in charge and rumours in his homeland have linked the former Napoli boss with the vacant managerial roles at Juventus and Roma.
"I will speak to the club as I want to see if they are happy with me or not," said Sarri on Wednesday (May 22). "I have two more years on my contract."
The Milan stock exchange does not appear to share Chelsea fans' reservations. Juventus shares rose 5.6 per cent on Wednesday afternoon following reports in the Italian press that the Serie A champions had been in contact with Sarri.
Juventus are looking for a manager after parting last week with Massimiliano Allegri, who won the Italian title in each of his five seasons in charge. Juventus shares, which dipped below €0.60 last May before Cristiano Ronaldo arrived, reached €1.46 on Wednesday.
Sarri insisted any decision on his future should not be dependent on the outcome of the Europa League final.
"If the situation is like this then I want to go immediately," he added. "Ten months of work and then I have to play everything in 90 minutes, that is not right. You are either happy about my work or not happy."

'Good to wonderful season'

Sarri, though, defended his record after guaranteeing the club's principal target for the campaign of a return to the Champions League and reaching two Cup finals.
"I think that we had a good season, with a lot of problems of course," he added.
"We finished third in the Premier League, final of League Cup, a very difficult competition, now we have the possibility to play the final of the Europa League.
"If we are able to win then it will become a wonderful season."
Arsenal's preparation for the final has been disrupted as midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has decided not to travel on safety grounds due to political tensions between his native Armenia and hosts Azerbaijan.
Supporters from both clubs also face huge logistical issues and expense in trying to attend the final in a city nearly 2,500 miles (4,025km) from London.
And Sarri joined Arsenal's condemnation of selecting Baku as the host city for such a prestigious final.
"The location is a big problem for our fans. I think it was better to be in another location," he said.
On Mkhitaryan's decision not to travel, he added: "Really disappointed for the situation, I would like to see him on the pitch.
"In a decision like this you have to respect the decision of the man. Not of the player, of the man."

LONDON (REUTERS) - Goals from Aaron Ramsey and Alexandre Lacazette gave Arsenal a 2-0 win over Newcastle United on Monday (April 1) and lifted them to third place in the Premier League above rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.
Ramsey found his way through a packed defence on the half hour to score with a low shot before Frenchman Lacazette put the game to bed in the 83rd minute with a chip over the keeper.
The result put Arsenal on 63 points with seven games left, two above Spurs and Manchester United, with Chelsea a further point behind, as Unai Emery's side boosted their hopes of a top-four finish and Champions League football next season.
"The coach said we had to be patient and efficient in the box, and we did that. It's always like this against Newcastle. We are happy," Lacazette told Sky Sports.
"I can feel the difference in the atmosphere from last season. Now we can maybe go to the Champions League." The visitors had not beaten Arsenal since November 2010 and not won away since December and they appeared to set themselves up for a draw at best in North London, with five men in the back line and another four in front of them for most of the game.
The tactics worked until a sweeping Arsenal move in which Welsh midfielder Ramsey found Lacazette and then raced forward into the area to meet the return pass with a sweetly timed left-foot shot that went into the net off the far post.
Arsenal pushed forward repeatedly as the opening period came to a close but failed to finish off any of their moves, with Sead Kolasinac particularly guilty of some wayward passing.
Their best chance came just before halftime when Lacazette latched onto a pass from Mesut Ozil, spun round and lashed the ball goalwards only for Matt Richie to head it off the line.
Lacazette wrapped up the points, however, when Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles failed to clear a header into the area from Arsenal substitute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The Frenchman nipped in behind Lascelles and chipped an inch-perfect ball over Martin Dubravka to seal the win.
Newcastle remain in 14th place on 35 points, seven points above the relegation places, and have six games left.
"We have to try to get three points against (Crystal) Palace," manager Rafael Benitez said ahead of their home fixture on Saturday. "The next match is the most important."

Brighton game is the biggest of my life, says Sterling

Brighton game is the biggest of my life, says Sterling

LONDON • The Premier League title race has provided plenty of thrills and spills this season, with the winners to be decided on the final day tomorrow - only the eighth time since the league's inception in 1992 that this has happened.
Just one point separates Manchester City (95) and Liverpool (94), with both teams only losing a combined five times between them, and even Raheem Sterling has acknowledged "how big an occasion it is".
Such has been the titanic tussle that the Reds could set their highest points tally in league history, a win over Wolves will put them on 97 points - only City last season have achieved better with 100.
But even a victory at Anfield for Jurgen Klopp's players will come to nought should Pep Guardiola's men beat Brighton away.
City will become the first team in a decade to retain the league title since Manchester United in 2009.
And, because it is in their hands, Sterling is confident they can finish the job at the Amex Stadium and prolong Liverpool's agonising 29-year wait for a league title.
Speaking on Thursday evening after picking up his Football Writers Player of the Year Award, the England forward, who is the joint-fourth highest scorer in the league this term with 17 goals, said: "I'd much rather be on our side, to know if we win the game (against the Seagulls), it's ours."
However, the 24-year-old, whose exploits have also seen him collect the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Young Player of the Year accolade, warned his teammates "it will be a tough day" as Chris Hughton's players were not going to roll over for City to be crowned champions.
He said: "We know Brighton won't just sit there and let us score goals. They're safe and it is going to be really tough, to be honest with you, but it is one I am really looking forward to."
Paying tribute to his mum as his inspiration for "where I get my fight from", he added: "Right now, being here and getting voted the Writers' Player of the Year is amazing and on Sunday, I have the biggest game of my life to go and win. It's very special.
"My mum is the biggest inspiration in my life. Whenever something is going wrong, I always think of my mum. She is always fighting, I have seen her fighting through the hardest things."
He also told reporters of his delight at seeing his former club Liverpool reach their second straight Champions League final after stunning Barcelona 4-0 in midweek, despite having left Anfield for the Etihad under a cloud in 2015.
Sterling said: "I was really happy for Liverpool, I was buzzing. People might not believe me, but it's true.
"Seeing some of the boys like Hendo (Jordan Henderson) and Trent (Alexander-Arnold) in the final makes me happy, I'm really happy for them."
Virgil van Dijk, though, is not giving up hope City still can be pipped to the league title believing Liverpool are "still in this season and anything is possible".
The Netherlands defender, who pipped Sterling to land the PFA Player of the Year prize, told Liverpool's website that even if Guardiola's men do not slip up tomorrow, their double tilt - they will meet Tottenham in the Champions League final - will be a springboard for future silverware.
He said: "We have a great age group, between 20 and 27, 28. So hopefully, we can do it all together for the next couple of years at least and grow as a team and get a lot of successes.
"It's just the start... We'll see. If it (the league title) doesn't happen, then it's not the end of the world. We've had a fantastic season.
"To compete with City says a lot about how we're progressing from last year. It's not like next year we're not going to try to do it again. It's something we have to build on."

ROME • Massimiliano Allegri believes that he is leaving behind a squad strong enough to win the Champions League next season, after it was confirmed on Friday that the Juventus coach will depart the club at the end of this season.
Speaking at an emotional press conference yesterday when president Andrea Agnelli, first-team players and club officials were present, the Italian said: "I leave a winning team which has the potential to repeat its achievements in Italy and have another great Champions League campaign.
"Unfortunately, some situations meant we couldn't go all the way (during my time).
"We talked, expressed our ideas on what was best for Juventus and the future of Juventus. After that, the club evaluated it and decided it was best that I wouldn't be the coach of Juventus next season.
"I leave behind a solid group with extraordinary players, both technically and as men, because you need good men to win as well as good footballers."
The 51-year-old, whose contract had been running through to June 2020, has been in charge of the Italian Serie A club since joining from AC Milan in 2014, and won the league title in each of his five seasons in charge.
In the Champions League, however, Juve's 23-year wait was extended this term after they lost in the quarter-finals to Ajax.
They had also lost the 2015 final to Barcelona and were again runners-up two years later to Real Madrid.
Despite that, Allegri, who also led the club to four Italian Cups and two Super Cups, insisted that he will part ways on friendly terms.
"I am happy and moved, but enough with it because tomorrow we have to celebrate the Scudetto (after Juve's final home match of the season against Atalanta today) and the farewell of (retiring defender) Andrea Barzagli," added Allegri, speaking at times with a broken voice.
"We have to celebrate because these were five extraordinary years."
Agnelli said he would not answer questions about the next coach, as he thanked Allegri for "closing one of Juve's most extraordinary moments" and gave him a shirt with the words "history alone".
The duo then hugged at the end of the press conference and left the room to huge applause.
According to Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport , former Juventus and Chelsea manager Antonio Conte will not replace Allegri because he has already agreed to join Inter Milan.

Football: Real's Ramos handed two-game European ban

MADRID (REUTERS) - Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has been hit with a two-game European suspension for "clearly receiving a yellow card on purpose", European soccer body UEFA said in a statement on Thursday (Feb 28).
Ramos received a yellow card for a foul on Kasper Dolberg late in his side's 2-1 win at Ajax Amsterdam in their Champions League last-16, first-leg match.
As a result of the booking, the 32-year-old was suspended from next Tuesday's second leg.
This, however, reduced his chances of possibly missing a more important match later in the competition, as all bookings are wiped from the quarter-final stage.
In a television interview after the game, Ramos said: "Looking at the result I would be lying if I said it wasn't intentional."
The defender later issued statements clarifying that he meant to say that he had committed the foul on purpose but had not intended to get booked.
UEFA's ruling means Ramos will be suspended from the second leg against Ajax next week at the Santiago Bernabeu and banned from playing in the first leg of a quarter-final tie should the European champions progress to the last eight.
