Football: Neymar to resume training on Wednesday after injury

PARIS (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar will returning to training on Wednesday for "on-pitch tests" after two-and-a-half months out with a foot injury, the club said on Tuesday (April 2).
The world's most expensive player has been sidelined since hobbling off during a French Cup win over Strasbourg on Jan 23, missing PSG's Champions League last-16 defeat by Manchester United.
"@Neymarjr's recovery from injury is progressing well and he will return to training on Wednesday as scheduled for on-pitch tests," PSG said on Twitter.
"Club specialists will carry out a full medical and radiological assessment in two weeks' time."
PSG were hoping Neymar would be healed enough to get back on the pitch in time for a potential Champions League quarter-final later this month, but the French side suffered a humiliating exit as United sensationally overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit.
The 27-year-old may be targeting a return for a potential French Cup final on April 27, should PSG get past Nantes in the last four on Wednesday.
Coach Thomas Tuchel said Tuesday that PSG will also be without Edinson Cavani, Angel Di Maria and Thomas Meunier against Nantes.

Football: Tottenham to make late call on Kane for Champions League final

MADRID (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino will wait until the last minute to decide whether Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is fit enough to face Liverpool in the Champions League final on Saturday (June 1).
Kane has said he feels ready to start in Madrid, despite not playing since damaging ankle ligaments in the quarter-finals against Manchester City last month.
Asked in a press conference on Friday if Kane would play, Pochettino said: "I don't know. We have one training session left and then we are ready to decide."
If Pochettino picks Kane, it would deliver a significant boost to Spurs but they have survived without him, after Lucas Moura scored an incredible second-leg hat-trick to knock out Ajax in the semis.
"It is not going to be easy to take a decision tomorrow," Pochettino said.
"We have all the information and we know every single detail. To try to win, you can only use 11 players, that is the most painful situation."
Pocxhettino had lobbied to include all his players in the official pre-match on-field photo.
"I proposed a few weeks ago that the whole squad do a picture together before the game and I think UEFA have listened.
"We talk about the value of the game - many things have happened in England, a lot of problems, and tomorrow we have one billion people watching and we can show the value of football.
"I think tomorrow is about showing togetherness and it is a great chance to show the value of a collective sport."
Tottenham have reached their first ever European Cup or Champions League final, while Liverpool are bidding to win the tournament for a sixth time after losing to Real Madrid in the final last year.
Spurs' run is the greater surprise after dramatic, late goals against Manchester City and Ajax put them within sight of the trophy, despite not signing a single player in the last two transfer windows.
"To be here, with everything falling for us, it means the praise comes a lot and the team feels strong at the end of the season," Pochettino said.

'IF YOU BELIEVE'

"The club couldn't sign players, it's true, we could not open the new stadium until a month ago and we had to play at Wembley, as well feeling the effects of the World Cup.
"All these things have given us strength, they have made us better, more creative. If you believe, and you have faith, and you work hard, you can have rewards."
Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris is bidding to win both the Champions League and World Cup within 10 months, after he triumphed with France in Russia last summer.
"It is a privilege to be part of these two teams," Lloris said. "To win the World Cup with my country was a massive achievement but it couldn't be possible without the help of my teammates and it is the case again in this final.
"I think we have a good mix of experienced players and young players and they need to follow the leaders, first the manager and then the team's leaders.
"And then we just need to be ready because it is a fantastic game to play. It's going to be about small details. They can be decisive."

Klopp unfazed by early FA Cup exit

Klopp unfazed by early FA Cup exit

LONDON • Another year, another early departure from the FA Cup for Liverpool. In four seasons under manager Jurgen Klopp, they have not got beyond the fourth round and, this time, they did not even reach that far.
The bigger picture this season, of course, is that they have bigger prizes to aim for.
It probably says much about the FA Cup's place in Klopp's list of priorities that he looked more perturbed by a hamstring injury to Dejan Lovren in the opening minutes against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday than by the 2-1 third-round defeat that followed.
The German believes the injury, in the midst of a hectic schedule, highlighted precisely why he chose to name a second-string side to face the Wolves.
"Hamstring, is what I heard - without any signs before," the Reds manager told reporters. "I asked everybody, no signs, nothing, just out of the blue, so that's the decision you have to make.
"I am not sure what you all would have said if immediately from the beginning, our centre-half situation was Fabinho and Ki-Jana (Hoever); then probably a few very smart people would tell me that I don't respect the competition or whatever."
Klopp made nine changes to the side that lost for the first time in the Premier League this season to Manchester City last Thursday, with Lovren one of only two players to retain their place.

  • 2011
Liverpool have been knocked out of the FA Cup in the third round for the first time since 2011, when they lost 1-0 to Manchester United.

  • 5
The Reds have been eliminated from five of their last seven FA Cup ties against fellow Premier League sides.

He gave rare starts to Simon Mignolet, Alberto Moreno, Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge as well as senior debuts for Curtis Jones, a 17-year-old local lad, and Rafa Camacho, an 18-year-old Portuguese midfielder who found himself filling a hole at right-back.
Lovren's injury meant that they were soon joined by the Dutch defender Hoever who, at 16 years and 354 days, became the third-youngest player in Liverpool's history and the youngest in the FA Cup.
Goals from Raul Jimenez and Ruben Neves either side of half-time sent Wolves into the fourth round, despite Origi's fine strike after the break briefly bringing Liverpool level.
Without forwards Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, the Reds struggled to get any momentum going forward.

Wolves, though, have made a habit of upsetting the Premier League's established top six in their first season back in the top flight.
After beating Chelsea and Tottenham and holding City, Manchester United and Arsenal in the Premier League, Liverpool can now be added to the list of scalps for Nuno Espirito Santo's side.
Klopp had a final roll of the dice by throwing on Salah and Firmino for the final 20 minutes, but even their firepower failed to spark a fightback and his selection will now be questioned as he is still to deliver a trophy in his four seasons in charge.
However, with Liverpool still in pole position to deliver a first league title in 29 years, the German remained defiant over his changes.
"We played a similar line-up and had three tough games in the last couple of weeks, so it was clear we had to change," Klopp added after a run of four Premier League games in 13 days over the festive period.
"The intensity of the last few games gave me the information it was not possible to start with these three (Salah, Firmino and Mane) up front."
Wolves will now face the winners of the replay between Shrewsbury Town and Stoke City in the fourth round, the highlight of which is a mouth-watering clash between Arsenal and Manchester United.
The Gunners, with 13 FA Cup wins, and United with 12, are the most successful clubs in the world's oldest knockout competition.

PORTO • An unstoppable force will meet an immovable object when Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal clash with Virgil van Dijk's Netherlands for the inaugural Nations League title today.
While there is a rare international trophy at stake, just as fascinating will be the head-to-head battle between two of the finest players in the world - even if this is being played down on the Dutch side.
"We're not just playing against Cristiano Ronaldo," defender van Dijk said after Thursday's 3-1 extra-time semi-final win over England.
"We're playing against an amazing Portugal."
His coach Ronald Koeman agreed and said possession would be the best form of defence against Ronaldo at Porto's Dragao Stadium.
He said: "We know that, sometimes, it's impossible to defend well against Cristiano Ronaldo.
"The best thing we can do is to keep the ball because when we have the ball, he can do nothing in attack."
Van Dijk, who won the Champions League with Liverpool on June 1, was his usual impressive solid self against England, aware of where he needed to be before anyone else. He would arrive, unhurried, and the likes of Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling, Jadon Sancho and Harry Kane were duly dispossessed.
Statisticians Opta said no player has dribbled past van Dijk in his last 64 club games before the Nations League. Strong and quick, good in the air and relaxed on the ball, he is the complete defender.
"He deserves the Ballon d'Or," Koeman added.
Van Dijk himself played this down, citing Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi as favourite.
But it is not Messi but his great attacking rival, Ronaldo, that van Dijk will meet today.
Should Portugal retain their 4-4-2 formation from their 3-1 win over Switzerland, there is the mouthwatering prospect of the two matching up for 90 minutes.
Ronaldo, now 34, may not be quite as dominant as before but a magnificent hat-trick, his 53rd, against Switzerland took his side through to the final.
"A football genius" was coach Fernando Santos' view of his talisman while "little Messi" Bernardo Silva said: "We're used to this kind of thing, he's been doing it for ages. It isn't a surprise to anyone now."
The Portuguese media went to town with his return following a post-World Cup break, with the Correio da Manha newspaper declaring "The Return of the King" on its front page.
Captaining Portugal to a trophy at home would be another high point in Ronaldo's incredible career and would vanquish any lingering scars from the Euro 2004 final loss to Greece in Lisbon.
"It's the preparation, my work ethic. I still feel good despite being 34," Ronaldo told uefa.com. "The most important thing is your head, to feel motivated and happy, and to follow my path as a player, because I think I still have a lot to give."

Football: Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey must rise to challenge after hitting Juventus jackpot

LONDON (AFP) - Aaron Ramsey has joined European football's moneyed elite after agreeing on a lucrative move to Juventus, but doubts remain about the Arsenal midfielder's ability to justify his jaw-dropping salary.
Reports in Britain claim his four-year deal will pay him a basic salary of £400,000 (S$699,000) per week once he officially joins Juventus in the close-season.
While some in the Italian media have questioned whether the contract is really that high, there can be no doubt the Wales star is now among the best-paid players in the world.
The staggering salary was available to Ramsey because his Arsenal deal was due to expire at the end of this season, making him eligible to sign a pre-contract with any overseas team after Jan 1 under the terms of the "Bosman ruling" that provides the guidelines for free agent transfers.
The 28-year-old is a quality player but few would rank him alongside soon-to-be Juventus team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Paris St-Germain's Neymar, all global icons whose pay packets are now joined by Ramsey as among the biggest in the sport.
Juventus' willingness to splash the cash has surprised many but, because the Italian club did not need to give Arsenal a transfer fee, they see the deal as good business.
Juventus sporting director Fabio Paratici told Gazzetta dello Sport that Ramsey can finally unlock his full potential in Turin.
"Ramsey is a player who in my opinion has never found his position, because he has never played in a three (in midfield), which is his role, capable as he is of running from deep," he said.
Ramsey has provided six assists in the English Premier League this season - more than any Juventus midfielder - and John Toshack, who gave Ramsey his Wales debut, believes his former player is versatile enough to cope in Serie A.
"He might do better in a three-man midfield, where he has the possibility to push forward. In modern football you do need to be versatile and he is a modern player," Toshack said.
Arsenal had been prepared to offer Ramsey an improved long-term contract themselves, but that deal was suddenly taken off the table following the arrival of new manager Unai Emery in the close-season.
"We thought we were in a position where we had agreed a deal but that's no longer the case," Ramsey said in October.
While he is a fan favourite for his whole-hearted play and knack of scoring crucial goals, he has been reduced to bit-part status under the Spaniard.
Stand-out moment
Ramsey has made only nine Premier League starts for Arsenal this term, featuring 13 times as a substitute.
Even in his truncated time on the pitch, Ramsey has given glimpses of the talent Juventus have paid so richly to acquire.
His standout moment came in a rout of Fulham when he helped instigate a flowing move that ended with his audacious back-heeled finish for one of the goals of the season to date.
This roller-coaster campaign has been the perfect encapsulation of Ramsey's 11-year Arsenal career.
Signed from Cardiff in 2008 as a precocious 17-year-old who had already become the second-youngest player to appear in an FA Cup final, he was heralded as the centre-piece to a new era for then Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.
Ramsey initially looked capable of living up to that billing, but a horrific broken leg suffered in a challenge from Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross in 2010 took a heavy toll.
It was three years before he was mentally and physically recovered.
His gruelling rehabilitation was rewarded when he scored the winner goal in the 2014 and 2017 FA Cup finals and was voted Arsenal's Player of the Year last season.
Now Ramsey is preparing to follow in the footsteps of fellow Welshmen John Charles and Ian Rush, who also made headline-grabbing moves to Juventus.
Charles is still revered as a Juventus legend, while Rush is a footnote after one forgettable season.
Ramsey's place in Juve's hall of fame is uncertain, but his bank balance will never be a problem again.

The Mexico international, whose diving header had made it 3-3 with six minutes left, nodded the ball in again from Felipe Anderson's cross to send the London Stadium crowd into raptures.
"Javier played well in past games but he was maybe under pressure to score. Now he's come off the bench and scored two," West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini told the BBC.
"I hate it when my team play bad. Winning or losing I want to play well. But winning is the important thing. Winning 4-3 and scoring three in the last 10 minutes is good for the team and the fans."
Defender Angelo Ogbonna had given the home side hope with a header from Aaron Cresswell's corner after Huddersfield scored three goals in a league match for the first time this season through Karlan Grant's double and a Juninho Bacuna strike.
Earlier, West Ham took the lead in the 15th minute through skipper Mark Noble who drilled his penalty past goalkeeper Jonas Lossl after midfielder Manuel Lanzini was brought down by teenager Aaron Rowe.
The visitors responded almost immediately with their first shot on target as an unmarked Bacuna rose well to meet fellow midfielder Aaron Mooy's whipped corner with a powerful header past Lukasz Fabianski.
Huddersfield went 2-1 up late in the first half with a well-worked free kick routine that led to Grant tucking in Chris Lowe's low cross from the left. Grant's second was a powerful effort from distance in the second half.
A frustrated Grant explained how Huddersfield squandered the lead to lose their third match in a row.
"It's a tough one to take, 3-1 up away from home... we have to do better from there. Don't concede three when you're 3-1 up, it's that simple," he said.
"Everyone's gutted. I scored two but we didn't walk away with three points, that's what hurts most. We have to play for pride at the moment. We're in a tough place. We need to stick together and go again."
Huddersfield have lost 16 of their last 18 league matches to sit bottom of the table with 14 points from 31 games.

Football: Wales leave it late to beat Trinidad without Bale

WREXHAM, United Kingdom (AFP) - Wales needed a stoppage-time goal from Liverpool teenager Ben Woodburn to beat Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 in friendly on Wednesday (March 20) after Ryan Giggs left Gareth Bale out of the home side in Wrexham.
Bale was one of several players, including Aaron Ramsey and David Brooks, omitted by Wales manager Giggs just days before the team begin their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign against Slovakia in Cardiff on Sunday.
Trinidad and Tobago are ranked 93rd in the world - 74 places lower than Wales - yet it seemed they might be rewarded with a highly creditable draw at a Racecourse Ground where their manager, Dennis Lawrence, played for Wrexham.
The last match between the two countries had seen Bale become Wales' youngest player at 16 years and 315 days in a victory over Trinidad in Austria in a 2006 friendly.
Bale was not even on the bench on Wednesday, with Giggs protecting his star player ahead of Sunday's match.
Trinidad nearly took the lead when Aubrey David's shot was cleared off the line by Chris Gunter.
But the second minute of stoppage time produced the lone goal when Woodburn chested in a Will Vaulks cross.
Bale, Wales' record goalscorer, completed 90 minutes for the first time in 2019 on Saturday and scored as Spanish giants Real Madrid beat Celta Vigo 2-0 in La Liga.
"We all know what a talent he is, and if he plays games he'll score goals," said Manchester United great Giggs of Bale ahead of Wednesday's match.
"But also I want to take the pressure off him at the same time, so if he's not available we're not just reliant on one player," he added.
