Football: Man United 'not good enough', says Solskjaer

LONDON (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Manchester United had not been good enough over the course of the season after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Huddersfield ended their chances of qualifying for next year's Champions League.
United have now won just two of their past 11 games in all competitions as Huddersfield ended a run of eight straight defeats despite goalkeeper Jonas Lossl's error handing the visitors an early lead through Scott McTominay.
Terrible defending from Solskjaer's men gave the Terriers something to celebrate in their final home game before heading down to the Championship as Isaac Mbenza levelled on the hour mark.
United huffed and puffed but could not find a winner and they cannot now mathematically finish in the top four of the Premier League.
"We are where we are for a reason," Solskjaer told Sky Sports. "Over a long season we haven't been good enough to challenge for the Champions League places. It's not come as a surprise but we hoped to show a better performance today."
"We haven't taken enough points, won enough games, scored enough goals. It's always difficult when you lose your manager halfway through the season," he added. "It's caught up with us a little bit.
"It shows us where we are. We're not living in fantasy land thinking we can catch the top two, we're far away but we shouldn't be speaking about being far off the top four at Manchester United.

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Manchester City survived a sloppy start to secure top spot in Champions League Group F by coming from behind to beat Hoffenheim 2-1 thanks to Leroy Sane's double on Wednesday (Dec 12).
Andrej Kramaric's penalty put the Germans deservedly in front on 16 minutes as another much-changed City side struggled to get up to speed.
However, Pep Guardiola's men found their feet as the first half wore on and were level just before the break courtesy of a brilliant Sane free-kick.
Guardiola was frustrated by his side's wastefulness in front of goal in the second period, but Sane did at least secure victory by converting Raheem Sterling's pass on the hour mark.
City made life difficult for themselves with a flat performance in losing at home to Lyon in their opening group game and were similarly caught cold having already secured their place in the last 16.
Kramaric had fired a warning shot inches over before Ederson in the City goal showed he wasn't to be outdone by Brazilian international team-mate Alisson Becker's heroics to secure Liverpool's place in the knockout stages against Napoli on Tuesday by producing an incredible finger-tip stop to turn another curling effort from the Croatian behind.
However, Kramaric's luck was in third time round from the penalty spot after Aymeric Laporte was punished for hauling down Benjamin Hubner.
All of City's best efforts before the break came from set-pieces as Gabriel Jesus headed Sane's corner off the post before Oliver Baumann got down well to deny John Stones.
Nicolas Otamendi sent another wicked dead ball delivery from Ilkay Gundogan off the crossbar, but the hosts were finally level in spectacular fashion when Sane curled home a free-kick into the top corner from 30 yards out.
Hoffenheim needed to win just to have a chance of qualifying for the Europa League knockout stages in third, but in their desperation to chase a winner left themselves hopelessly exposed to the pace of Sane and Sterling after the break.
Sane was guilty of overplaying as City incredibly spurned a three-against-one when Sterling fed the German, who tried to tee up the surprised Bernardo Silva rather than going for goal himself and Baumann saved the Portuguese's shot.
Sterling has been in the news for bravely speaking out about the alleged racist abuse he suffered in defeat at Chelsea on Saturday and news coverage he has received in the past.
However, the England international showed little sign of letting it disrupt his fine form on the pitch as he teed up Sane to round Baumann and slot home the winner.
Pep Guardiola handed Phil Foden his first Champions League start of the season and the 18-year-old was only denied a spectacular first goal in the competition by a fine save by Baumann to turn his dipping volley over.
However, it mattered little as the competition favourites march into Monday's last 16 draw where they can face Atletico Madrid, Schalke, Ajax or Roma.

The visitors opened the scoring inside five minutes after an effort from Abdoulaye Doucoure was blocked by Huddersfield centre back Terence Kongolo inside the area, only for Deulofeu to slot home a curling effort.
The Spanish winger doubled his tally for the afternoon with an identical goal after Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl had saved the initial effort from Doucoure.
It was the Deulofeu's ninth league goal of the campaign, continuing his sparkling run of form after his two strikes against Wolverhampton Wanderers put Watford in the FA Cup final.
Relegated Huddersfield struggled to create opportunities for the majority of the game before substitute Karlan Grant headed in a late consolation goal.
Watford boss Javi Gracia was pleased with an all-round display from Deulofeu, who has now scored six goals in his last five away league appearances.
"He's scoring important goals and very good goals," Gracia said.
"All goals are good for me, but in this moment I think Gerard is scoring and he is living an important moment for him and for the team, helping the team with his goals."
The win took Watford provisionally to seventh in the league standings, which could guarantee a Europa League spot should Manchester City beat them in the FA Cup final.
"This week is going to be tough with Southampton and Wolves," former Barcelona winger Deulofeu said.
"We know the FA Cup final is going to be tough against Manchester City but we did 10 months really well and we have to finish in the best way so we'll try to finish seventh."
Grant's fourth league goal of the season made him Huddersfield's top scorer of the campaign as the Terriers moved level with Derby County's lowest Premier League tally of 20 goals in 2007-08.

The Premier League club signed Pulisic - regarded as one of the hottest properties in European football - on a five-and-a-half year contract for a reported fee of Â£58 million (S$100 million) from German Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund a day after the winter window opened.
The sum smashed the previous highest transfer for an American, the reported â‚¬20 million (S$30 million) German club Wolfsburg stumped up for John Brooks in 2017.
"It's a privilege to have signed for such a legendary club and I look forward to working hard towards being a contributor to their team of world class players," said Pulisic in a statement published on the Chelsea website.
Dortmund will keep the 20-year-old right winger on loan until the end of the season as part of what they described an "extraordinarily lucrative offer from Chelsea" as they look to win their first league title since 2012.
Pulisic made his Bundesliga debut for Dortmund aged just 17 after rapidly progressing through the team's academy and quickly established himself as one of the most exciting prospects in Europe.
In November he became the youngest player to captain the United States' senior side, aged 20 years and 63 days.
In France, Ligue 1 club Montpellier signed promising Uruguay international defender Mathias Suarez, choosing to reveal neither details of the transfer fee nor the player's contract.
The 22-year-old arrives in France from Defensor Sporting, a club based in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo where he played more than 100 matches since making his debut as a teenager in 2013.
"It was a dream of mine to come and play in Europe and today I have made this dream a reality by signing for Montpellier," the player said on the club's website.
Suarez made his debut for the national team in a 1-0 loss against Brazil in November, before playing the full 90 minutes days later in another single-goal defeat against France.
In Spain, Villarreal released former Chile international Manuel Iturra after the 34-year-old defensive midfielder, who played 33 times for his country, started just one match for the La Liga strugglers this season after signing from Malaga in the summer.

MILAN (AFP) - Rising Italy star Moise Kean was targeted by racist abuse after he scored for Juventus on Tuesday (April 2) - but teammate Leonardo Bonucci blamed him for inciting the crowd at Cagliari.
Goals from 19-year-old Kean and Bonucci gave Juve a 2-0 victory over Cagliari that took them closer to an eighth consecutive Serie A title.
Kean slotted in his fourth goal in as many league games in the 85th minute after Bonucci nodded in the opener on 22 minutes in Sardinia.
The youngster's celebration after scoring, however, infuriated the home crowd, who had jeered the teenager throughout after he was booked for diving in the first half.
Kean, along with his French teammate Blaise Matuidi and Brazilian Alex Sandro, were targeted by monkey noises throughout the match, but they increased in intensity after the second goal.
The Juventus teenager celebrated with his hands outstretched in front of the Cagliari fans after scoring, but Bonucci claimed that Kean should not have provoked the home supporters and said his teammate was partly to blame.
"Kean knows that when he scores a goal, he should celebrate that with his teammates. He knows he could have done something differently too," he told Sky Sport Italia.
"There were racist jeers after the goal, Blaise heard it and was angered. I think the blame is 50-50, because Moise shouldn't have done that and the Curva (Cagliari fans) should not have reacted that way.
"We are professionals, we have to set the example and not provoke anyone."

Objects thrown

Cagliari fans appeared to throw objects at Kean, and the match was momentarily stopped and an appeal made over the stadium speakers.
Former Paris Saint-Germain player Matuidi appeared furious at the jeers at the same stadium where he was targeted last season.
The abuse came on the day that Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said he was "ashamed" by the recent outbreak of racist abuse and vowed to ask referees to stop matches in the future if racist chanting breaks out.
Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri called for the culprits to be identified and banned.
"As usual, there are some idiots, but also normal people," Allegri said. "We have cameras, we identify and ban them."
Cagliari president Tommaso Giulini, however, blamed Kean for stirring up tensions and said criticism of his club's supporters was "self-righteousness".
"If (Federico) Bernardeschi had done what Kean did, the reaction would have been the same," said Giulini.
"Nobody had heard anything up to that point. Kean made a mistake, he's 19, that's understandable," he added, saying he "mostly heard whistles".
"There is a drift towards self-righteousness that I don't like, this club has always been exemplary and has always denounced racist behaviour."
The win put Juventus back 18 points clear of second-placed Napoli, who travel to lowly Empoli on Wednesday, with only eight matches to play.
The champions' next game is at home against AC Milan, who were held 1-1 by Udinese.
Juventus shrugged off the absence of star duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala, with Mario Mandzukic also out suffering from flu.
Cagliari goalkeeper Alessio Cragno denied Kean twice before the teenager finally broke through, scoring from Rodrigo Bentancur's pass.
