Football: Holders USA shrug off weight of Women's World Cup expectations

NEW YORK (REUTERS) - Few of the 24 women's World Cup teams arriving in France for next month's tournament will bear the weight of expectation quite like reigning champions the United States.
The three-time winners will be aiming not only to retain the trophy they won in 2015 but also build on their legacy as soccer's dominant women's team and further cement their role as leaders in the fight for gender equality.
In March, they sued the US Soccer Federation with allegations of gender discrimination with all 28 members of the squad named as plaintiffs in federal court.
But if the pressure on the squad in the build-up to the World Cup is beginning to grate on the players at all, 36-year-old co-captain Carli Lloyd is not showing it.
"Physically, this is the fittest I've ever felt, sharpest I've ever felt," 36-year-old midfielder Lloyd said at a media event on Friday (May 24). "I feel at ease, I feel calm, I feel hungry, I feel motivated and I just feel excited."
Lloyd, along with striker Alex Morgan, 29, and attacking midfielder Megan Rapinoe, 33, are among the veterans critical not only on the pitch but off it, as the U.S. bring new faces to the World Cup stage, said head coach Jill Ellis.
"It falls on those players to share their experiences, make sure there's a push when there needs to be a push and make sure there's an arm around the shoulder when that's needed as well," said Ellis, who oversaw the World Cup triumph four years ago.

The trio of co-captains bring a welcome dose of stability to the team, which failed to medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
"When you look at 2016, we had a lot (of the) players that we have now but those are players that barely had 10 caps on the team up to that point. Now I think (the team) is a little more experienced," said Morgan, who was in the 2011 and 2015 squads.
"I understand that when you look at literal terms yes we're defending champions, but I don't feel like going into this tournament we're looking at defending anything because this is four years we're talking about. There's so many things that can change."
Defender Becky Sauerbrunn, another stalwart at 33, said the current US team was full of younger players, alongside the more experienced squad members, and they would all be looking to make their own history at the tournament in France.
"This team is (a) new identity. It's revamped, it's got a very young, energetic, majority to it," said Sauerbrunn. "It's a new team, we're going to try to create our own legacy."
Much is expected of 21-year-old forward Mallory Pugh, while 26-year-old defender Crystal Dunn has plenty to prove, having been the last player cut from the 2015 World Cup squad.
The Americans are overwhelming favourites to top their World Cup group, having been handed a favourable draw that includes long-term rivals Sweden alongside Chile and Thailand, who the US will play in their first match on June 11.
"All of us are solely focused on the first game against Thailand and, you know, in a major tournament like this, you can't get too far ahead of yourself," said Lloyd, who scored a hat-trick in the first 16 minutes of the final four years ago.
"It's just kind of weathering the storm. Winning, whether that's pretty, ugly - just finding a way to win."
The World Cup kicks off on June 7 when hosts France face South Korea at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

Crucial to beat Watford to stop losing streak: Moura

Crucial to beat Watford to stop losing streak: Moura
LONDON • Tottenham forward Lucas Moura has urged his team to get back to winning ways, after Spurs crashed out of two domestic Cup competitions in the past week.
After losing in the League Cup semi-finals at Chelsea via a penalty shoot-out, Spurs also suffered a shock defeat by Crystal Palace in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
This means that they are left with two trophies to fight for this season - the Premier League, where they are third and nine points behind leaders Liverpool (60 points), and the Champions League, where they face Borussia Dortmund in the last 16 next month.
Spurs have not won a title since their League Cup win in 2008 and Moura said that it is crucial that the team turn their fortunes around, starting with a home league game against Watford today.
"The most important thing now is to return to a win," the Brazilian said on the club website on Monday, a day after manager Mauricio Pochettino suggested that finishing in the top four in the league should be their priority.
"It is a difficult moment. But we need to stay together, stay strong because we know that we have talent. We need to keep our heads up.
"We have a lot of experience, great players and we will be good for the rest of the season."
Wounded by fatigue and injuries to key attacking players like Harry Kane and Dele Alli, Spurs will at least have Moura to provide some firepower up front.
The 26-year-old returned to the starting line-up against Palace on Sunday after a knee problem.
Forward Son Heung-min is also back earlier than expected after South Korea's Asian Cup quarter-final exit to Qatar, although he may not be ready to feature today after missing three games.
"He's so tired, he played three games. Very tough games," Pochettino said. "We hope he'll be available and ready on Wednesday to help the team."

Football: Klopp hails 'best night' of his life after ending final hex

MADRID (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp revelled in the biggest night of his managerial career on Saturday (June 1) after winning Liverpool's sixth Champions League title, ending a run of six straight losses in finals.
Klopp had lost his two previous Champions League finals, against Bayern Munich as Borussia Dortmund boss in 2013 and last year against Real Madrid, the 2016 Europa League final and three domestic cup finals in Germany and England.
"I'm so happy for the boys, I'm so happy for my family, they suffer every year when we go to a final... they deserve it more than anybody," Klopp said to BT Sport.
"It's maybe the best night of my life."
Liverpool clinched their first European trophy since 2005 after a poor contest with fellow Premier League outfit Spurs, and Klopp hailed his side's guts to win the title despite obvious tiredness.
"Did you ever see a team like this, fighting with no fuel in the tank any more?" a jubilant Klopp added.
"This is great for our development because it's always like we'd be doing good steps but people say 'so what you didn't win anything'."

Managers in Germany are usually doused in beer after winning a trophy but when asked about that tradition, Klopp laughed: "Usually 20 minutes after the game I'm already half pissed, and here I didn't even get a water!"

Football: Southampton earn point against Chelsea in dour 0-0 draw

LONDON (REUTERS) - Southampton held Chelsea to a goalless draw on Wednesday (Jan 2), debutant Saints' goalkeeper Angus Gunn proving a bright spark in an otherwise lacklustre Premier League encounter at Stamford Bridge.
The 22-year-old made a series of fine saves to earn the struggling visitors a point and leave Chelsea in fourth, 10 points adrift of leaders Liverpool.
Chelsea, as expected, dominated possession and top-scorer Eden Hazard had the best chance of the first half but Gunn blocked the Belgian's point blank shot in the 34th minute.
Southampton started the second half with more purpose and, minutes in, midfielder Stuart Armstrong tested Kepa Arrizabalaga in the Chelsea goal for the first time, the Spanish keeper having to dive to push the ball clear.
Gunn denied Hazard again in the 56th minute with a fine save after the Belgian had danced round the Southampton defence.
Hazard, at the centre of most dangerous-looking Chelsea moves, put Alvaro Morata through in the 70th minute and the Spaniard's shot hit the back of the net but was judged offside.
Gunn smothered another Morata shot eight minutes later after the striker had been put through by substitute Ruben Loftus-Cheek and kept out Marcos Alonso in the dying moments of the game.

Football: Lukaku shines again as Man United rally to beat Southampton

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku continued his rich vein of form by scoring two goals, including a late winner, to give his side a comeback 3-2 home win over Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday (March 2).
It took the Belgian's tally to four goals in two games after he netted a brace in Wednesday's 3-1 win at Crystal Palace, with playmaker Andreas Pereira grabbing the other for the hosts in a rip-roaring clash at Old Trafford.
The result lifted United back into fourth place on 58 points from 29 games, one ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal who were held to a 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur in the early kickoff.
Sixth-placed Chelsea, who are on 53 points, have two games in hand and visit second bottom Fulham on Sunday.
Lukaku, who has endured dips in form during what has been a turbulent season at Old Trafford with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer taking over from Jose Mourinho as caretaker manager in December, was back to his lethal best.
"I was focused on the win and help my team mates," Lukaku told the BBC.
"We knew we had to win the game today and did it. Not our best game but we have to be happy.
"The manager gave me another chance today. We have to look one game at a time and are working hard on the training ground. We are ready for the challenge."

SPECTACULAR GOAL

Having weathered an early storm in which United missed three gilt-edged chances, Southampton took the lead in the 26th minute when Yan Valery scored his first goal for the club in spectacular fashion.
The 20-year old French wing-back, who joined Southampton from Ligue 1 side Rennes during the close season, unleashed a thunderbolt from 25 metres which beat United's stunned keeper David De Gea at the near post.
The home side equalised in the 53rd minute as the lively Pereira teed himself up for a long-range shot and curled it brilliantly past Saints keeper Angus Gunn.
Six minutes later, Pereira released Lukaku with fine footwork and the striker side-stepped a defender before he drilled a low shot with his weaker right foot into the bottom corner of the net.
James Ward-Prowse appeared to have snatched a point for the Saints with a stunning free kick from 25 metres before a frantic finish as Lukaku sent the home crowd into raptures.
A slick move ended with Lukaku turning his marker on the edge of the penalty area and drilling in another right-foot shot into the bottom corner in the 88th minute.
Gunn saved a poor stoppage-time penalty by Paul Pogba but the Frenchman's blunder did not dampen the mood at Old Trafford after Solskjaer stretched his impressive league start to 10 wins and two draws.
"It was one of those games, it had everything," said Solskjaer.
"My team did fantastic and the boys did great in the second half. The belief is there, they have gone so long without losing games (domestically) and are raring to go.
"They want to get on the ball and the confidence is high. They were class finishes from Romelu Lukaku and I am so pleased for Andreas Pereira."

A bankruptcy case normally begins when the debtor files a petition with the bankruptcy court. A petition may be filed by an individual, by spouses together, or by a corporation or other entity. All bankruptcy cases are handled in federal courts under rules outlined in the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.

Calling on Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino to drop the 32-year-old, he added: "Tottenham's priority now is not about sentiment… All that matters is finishing in the top four, because getting Champions League football next season is so important for the club's future." However, former Spurs goalkeeper Erik Thorstvedt has backed Lloris.

Game of many returns for Gunners

Game of many returns for Gunners

LONDON • Arsenal manager Unai Emery will face a familiar foe when the Gunners look to move a step closer to Europa League glory at Rennes today.
French midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa endured an unhappy two years under Emery at Paris Saint-Germain where he was frozen out for an entire season and made to train with the club's reserves.
However, his mercurial talent has now helped Ligue 1 side Rennes reach the last 16 of an European competition for the first time.
At 31, Ben Arfa has relaunched his career in the more modest surroundings of Roazhon Park and will aim to inflict revenge upon Emery today.
Rennes may lie 10th in Ligue 1, but shocked a highly fancied Real Betis in the last 32 with a thrilling 6-4 aggregate win.
"We know it'll be a level up against such a club," said Rennes midfielder Benjamin Andre.
"Arsenal is a name that resonates throughout Europe. They will obviously be the big favourites."

Arsenal's struggles on the road in Emery's first season in charge should give the French side reason to believe. The Gunners have won just once away from home since November, suffering an embarrassing 1-0 defeat by Bate Borisov in the last 32 before turning the tie around at the Emirates.

French international Alexandre Lacazette will miss out on a return to his homeland as he is suspended, but there will be a homecoming of another sort for Petr Cech, who spent two years at Rennes before joining Chelsea in 2004.
The Blues, meanwhile, are aiming to win the competition for a second time in six years starting against Dynamo Kiev at Stamford Bridge, with Maurizio Sarri having seemingly bounced back from the brink of losing his job.
London derby victories over Tottenham and Fulham have given the Italian breathing space after a 6-0 Premier League thrashing by Manchester City and then seeing his authority questioned by goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga's refusal to be substituted in the League Cup final.
Sarri's fate, though, will likely depend on sealing a return to Champions League football next season and winning the Europa League may yet prove the best means to that end with Tottenham, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea fighting for the final two places in the Premier League's top four.
Off the pitch, Fifa confirmed on Tuesday that Chelsea have appealed against a transfer ban imposed after they were found guilty of breaching rules on recruiting 29 foreign players under the age of 18.
The Blues, banned from the next two transfer windows and also fined 600,000 Swiss francs (S$810,850), had already said they would appeal against the decision taken by Fifa's disciplinary committee last month.
Fifa said in a statement that it could neither offer a schedule for the process, nor whether the ban would be lifted pending the hearing.

I do agree and have said so in many posts, the lack of control over the games is a major cause of our defensive problems. But even after that, individually the back line is not good enough. 1 vs 1, playing from the back, tracking runners, tackling the ball off the opp or generally dealing with technical players…etc All are glaring problems.

Ronaldo allays fears about hamstring injury in 1-1 draw

LISBON • Cristiano Ronaldo has played down the hamstring injury he suffered during Portugal's 1-1 Euro 2020 qualifying draw with Serbia, which could leave him facing a fitness race for the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
The star forward was forced off in the first half as his team stumbled to their second straight draw in Group B to leave them in third spot behind Ukraine and Luxembourg.
Danilo Pereira equalised for the home team after Dusan Tadic had opened the scoring for the visitors.
However, the 34-year-old sought to allay fears he will not be able to travel to Amsterdam, where Juventus will play the first leg of their quarter-final tie against Ajax on April 10.
The seven-time defending Italian champions smashed their transfer record to sign Ronaldo from Real Madrid in a €100 million (S$152.7 million) move last summer, with the aim of ending their 23-year European Cup drought.

Weeks Cristiano Ronaldo has given himself to return from his hamstring trouble.

Telling reporters he would "know more in 24 or 48 hours", the Portugal captain said: "I'm not worried, I know my body. It happens, it's football. If you go out in the rain, you get wet... I'm calm, I'll be back in one or two weeks."
Portugal struggled to breach Serbia's defence in his absence, although the hosts should have been awarded a penalty in the second half after defender Antonio Rukavina had handled the ball from Andre Silva's header.
Post-game, Ronaldo and coach Fernando Santos both said Polish referee Szymon Marciniak, who initially pointed to the spot, had apologised for overturning the decision.
Ronaldo said: "It was very clear, the referee should have given it. The linesman was 40 metres away, so it seems a bit strange."
Santos added: "We saw the incident in the dressing room afterwards, and neither we nor he (Marciniak) had any doubt, it was a penalty."
He also told Portuguese TV channel RTP: "He had no doubt, but that honesty does not help me. He gave a penalty... no one 40 metres away can make the decision it was not, especially when the referee saw it clearly.
"What will I do with the excuse? At least he called me to analyse. The assistant was there and I said that it was his fault."

Gunners can only loan, not buy players: Emery

Gunners can only loan, not buy players: Emery
LONDON • Unai Emery has said Arsenal will be able to sign players only on loan this month.
The Arsenal manager, who has no issue with Aaron Ramsey reportedly close to leaving for Juventus on a free transfer at the end of the season, has been linked with moves for Barcelona's Denis Suarez and Sevilla's Ever Banega.
Speaking ahead of today's trip to West Ham, the Spaniard admitted he would have to wheel and deal in the January transfer window as funds were limited.
"We cannot sign permanently," he said. "We can only loan players. I know the club is working on possibilities of which players can help us with big performances like we need now. I cannot say more."
Emery worked with Banega and Suarez at Sevilla and the latter is out of favour at the Nou Camp and would help to solve Arsenal's lack of attacking width.
However, it remains to be seen whether the club can secure a loan for the 25-year-old midfielder, with Barcelona asking for £10 million (S$17.2 million). Sevilla are likely to place an even heftier price on Banega, who has been a key figure for Emery in the past.
"I know this player and he's a very good player," the 47-year-old said.

MAKING ENDS MEET
We are working with the players who are with us now. Also, we are giving chances to the young players and finding with them the regularity to be consistent when we need them to be.
UNAI EMERY, Arsenal manager, is counting on youth to meet fixture demands.

The former Sevilla boss also insisted he was not unhappy with Arsenal's financial restrictions.
He added: "We are working with the players who are with us now. Also, we are giving chances to the young players and finding with them the regularity to be consistent when we need them to be.
"I am very happy. I know it is not easy for us now in this transfer market and, if we can find one player who can help us like we need, with the quality and a different player for getting in our squad, we are going to do it.
"But I am happy with every player today. It is really some injuries that didn't help us in the last matches because we struggled with different injuries with the players... if one or two players can come and help us, that is perfect."
The Gunners' defensive problems have eased for their visit to the London Stadium, with Hector Bellerin, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Shkodran Mustafi and Nacho Monreal all returning to full training earlier this week.
Midfielder Mesut Ozil could also play against Manuel Pellegrini's men, after shaking off the knee injury that has kept him out since Boxing Day.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

Manchester City 3 Everton 1
LONDON • Manchester City did not have things completely their way against Everton so in emerging with the 3-1 Premier League win, the champions illustrated why they remained title favourites despite losing top spot last Saturday.
They also leapfrogged Liverpool to become leaders again until, at the very least, Manchester United visit Anfield today.
Everton arrived at the Etihad yesterday as the only side not to lose at City's home ground in the two league outings since Pep Guardiola took over in 2016, but left with the record shredded.
City did this by retaining the relentlessness that steamrollered most opponents and that finally wore the visitors' resistance down.
Guardiola made four changes from their midweek Champions League win over Hoffenheim, bringing in Fabian Delph, Riyad Mahrez, Fernandinho and Kyle Walker.
The City boss also resisted starting Kevin de Bruyne and Sergio Aguero, despite the duo recovering from their respective injuries.

  • 11

  • League matches Gabriel Jesus has gone scored in since August, a total of 487 minutes and 18 shots without netting.

Fears in recent weeks that City lack a natural predator in front of goal in the absence of Aguero were quashed by two fine finishes from Gabriel Jesus, who had previously scored only one league goal in 13 games this season.
Having not netted in City's past five games, the Brazil forward was delighted to break his scoring duck, saying: "I'm so happy with the game and with the win. This season is more difficult for me because other clubs are stronger.
"This game was difficult so I am happy. The game was amazing."
Teammate Bernardo Silva was equally thrilled with his side's response after last weekend's defeat at Chelsea, which ended their unbeaten league run, telling reporters: "We are happy especially as we knew we were playing a very tough team. To get the three points is very good."
With temperatures approaching freezing in Manchester, City were nearly caught cold by an early Everton break when Richarlison fired the first big chance of the game over from Lucas Digne's cross.
The Toffees, however, played a big part in their own downfall as Jesus opened the scoring midway through the first half.
Yerry Mina's hopeful punt gave away possession and the defender then played Jesus onside as the latter ran onto Leroy Sane's pass to fire low past Jordan Pickford.
Guardiola's men had to wait just five minutes after the break to make it 2-0, when a patient build-up again found Sane on the left and the Germany winger's cross was met by a bullet header from Jesus.
Marco Silva's players had barely offered any threat in the second period but they got a lifeline 25 minutes from time after Dominic Calvert-Lewin's header flicked off Delph and past the helpless goalkeeper Ederson.
Guardiola responded by sending on Raheem Sterling for Sane and in a week in which the England forward spoke out bravely about the alleged racist abuse he suffered last weekend at the hands of Chelsea fans, he also made his mark on the field by scoring immediately.
Jesus was involved again as he freed Fernandinho, who picked out Sterling to head home for his ninth league goal of the term.
De Bruyne then made his first appearance since Nov 1 - just his fourth in the league this term - after being sidelined by two separate knee injuries and his return will be an early Christmas present ahead of Liverpool's league visit on Jan 3.

Football: Mixed reactions to Manchester United's appointment of Ole Gunnar Solksjaer

LONDON • Manchester United yesterday turned to former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to steady the ship until the end of the season, confirming him as caretaker manager in the wake of Jose Mourinho's sacking.
The Norwegian, who leaves his role as manager of Molde, whom he led to two Norwegian league titles in 2011 and 2012, will be joined by Mike Phelan as assistant manager.
The Englishman previously carried out that role under former United boss Alex Ferguson for five seasons before leaving in 2013.
On Tuesday, United parted company with Mourinho with the club in sixth spot in the English Premier League, having made their worst start to a season for 28 years.
The appointment of Solskjaer to inject some life into the Red Devils in some ways mirrors his playing career at the club, where he scored 126 goals between 1996 and 2007, often as an impact substitute.
His most memorable contribution came in the 1999 Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich, when he netted the stoppage-time winner.
"Manchester United is in my heart and it's brilliant to be coming back in this role," the former Cardiff manager said in a statement. "I'm really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club."

CROWD PLEASER
We are confident they will unite the players and the fans as we head into the second half of the season.
ED WOODWARD, United's executive vice-chairman, on the appointment of 1999 Champions League final hero Solskjaer as caretaker manager and another former player Mike Phelan as assistant manager.

POOR DECISION
If they appoint a new manager in the summer, he's not going to have much time to look for players. There is a real concern that you could have two seasons of rebuilding again.
DARREN FLETCHER, ex-United midfielder, criticising the move not to hire a full-time coach immediately.

Coincidentally, his first task will be to try and guide United to a much-needed league win at Cardiff - the club who were relegated from the English top flight on his watch in 2014 - on Saturday.
But United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward expressed his confidence the "club legend" would be able to bring some cheer to the Old Trafford faithful.
He said: "His history at Manchester United means he lives and breathes the culture here, and everyone at the club is delighted to have him and Mike Phelan back.
"We are confident they will unite the players and the fans as we head into the second half of the season."
The club are also understood to be looking for a director of football - a first for United - to oversee operations, a position which Mourinho was opposed to.
Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna, both part of his backroom staff, will be retained to work under Solskjaer, whom the Manchester United Supporters' Trust labelled the "ultimate super-sub and was just the man for the job".
The "Baby-faced Assassin", as he was popularly known by during his playing days, was given the blessing of Molde and earned plaudits from Ms Erna Solberg, the country's Prime Minister.
She tweeted: "Finally confirmed! Great day for Norwegian football."
Pundit Gary Neville, who has been vocal about United's need to hire someone who meets the club's "key principles", felt his former teammate could "bring the feel-good factor back".
He told Sky Sports: "At this moment in time, I can see where an interim appointment becomes someone who brings favour and goodwill, and he absolutely would.

"(He would) hold the fort until the end of the season and then United can go and get the next manager of this club for the next five to six months."
However, the former United defender warned the club's floundering stars their "excuses were gone now" and they "had to perform" as there would be no more flare-ups.
But not all were sold on Solskjaer taking on one of the biggest jobs in football as an interim boss, with former United midfielder Darren Fletcher declaring the announcement akin to "writing off this season and next season".
He told the BBC: "United should never be in this position. If they appoint a new manager in the summer, he's not going to have much time to look for players. There is a real concern that you could have two seasons of rebuilding again."
Former United midfielder Paul Ince was even more scathing, slamming the decision to opt for Solskjaer over former defensive stalwart Steve Bruce as "absolute madness".
He told bookmaker Paddy Power: "That has to be a joke. Yes, he's (Bruce) been sacked (as Aston Villa manager in October), but we've all been sacked before. Between him and Solskjaer, there's no comparison."

While mentoring can be time consuming, it is often also very satisfying. Football: Salah now in Emery's top five after PSG snub

LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal manager Unai Emery believes Mohamed Salah is now among the world's top five players, despite failing to sign him when he was in charge of Paris Saint-Germain.
The Gunners boss will be in opposition to the Liverpool forward when his Arsenal side face the unbeaten Premier League leaders at Anfield on Saturday.
Egypt international Salah, 26, has scored 59 goals in 78 matches since arriving at Anfield from Italian club Roma before the start of the 2017/18 season.
Emery was coach of Ligue 1 champions PSG at the time and on Friday (Dec 28) he admitted to being uncertain as to how Salah would cope with the pressure of playing for a major club.
"We spoke about the possibility to sign Salah to Paris St Germain when he was playing at Roma," Emery said.
"We had some doubts - and then he signed for Liverpool and these doubts he has broken at Liverpool. Now, if you are speaking about the five top players in the world, one is Salah."
Emery, asked about the nature of his reservations regarding Salah, added: "Can he take the performance into one big team?
"For example like PSG in Paris. And today I can say to you...if we signed him, we signed one player in the top five in the world."
Emery said the signings of Salah and centre-back Virgil van Dijk had been central to Liverpool's progress under Jurgen Klopp.
"I remember three years ago they had a problem in their defensive moments and bought some people - for example van Dijk - with a good investment and the result is we are looking at them today and their progress," he said.
"They are very strong in defence and also they are improving a lot when they bought Salah and now offensively they are a very big team."
The Spaniard added: "I think the Premier League is now the best and most important competition in the world for the teams, with Spain, maybe Italy and Germany.
"But I think here are the best teams and players and now the leader in the table is Liverpool - and it is because they are doing things very well."

Football: West Ham pass evidence to police on racist abuse of Liverpool's Salah during EPL game

LONDON (REUTERS) - West Ham have handed evidence to the police after completing an investigation into racist abuse shouted at Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah during their English Premier League match at the London Stadium on Monday (Feb 4).
A video emerged on social media in which audible racial slurs were directed at the 26-year-old Egypt international as he was taking a corner. The match finished in a 1-1 draw.
The user who posted the video on Twitter said: "I went to watch West Ham vs Liverpool and I was disgusted by what I was hearing. People like this deserve no place in our society let alone football matches."
The Metropolitan Police had told Reuters in an e-mail that officers were in the process of reviewing the footage and West Ham said in a statement on Thursday (Feb 7) that they had given all of their evidence to the police.
"After a thorough and immediate investigation following the abhorrent racist abuse aimed at Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah on Monday night, West Ham United can confirm that it has handed evidence to the Metropolitan Police," it said.
"The club is unequivocal in its stance - such abuse will not be tolerated. There is no place or excuse for this kind of behaviour."
Salah was last year named PFA Player of the Year and the Football Writers' Association's Footballer of the Year after he scored 44 goals for Liverpool in all competitions last season.

Hammers pack a punch: Klopp

Hammers pack a punch: Klopp

LONDON • West Ham may have a raft of injury problems, with a number of key players either missing or rated touch and go, but Jurgen Klopp is not taking their trip to the London Stadium lightly as their opponents are "nearly a top-six side".
Manuel Pellegrini's men are like the walking wounded at the moment, with only 15 players confirmed fit as they host Premier League front runners Liverpool today.
To add to their troubles, Marko Arnautovic, Lukasz Fabianski, Aaron Cresswell and midfielder Samir Nasri are all doubts for the game, but Klopp is still expecting "a really good football team".
At his pre-match press conference, the Liverpool manager said: "(They have) the most experienced manager in the Premier League at the moment, really good signings in defence.
"They are experienced in the full-back positions, (Declan) Rice, fantastic development this season next to (Mark) Noble in midfield, experience and youth.
"Then you have the wings - (Felipe) Anderson, fantastic signing, and Arnautovic, an outstanding striker... That's a really good football team, that's what we have to be ready for."

  • 4

  • Goals West Ham conceded in each of their last four games (0-4, 1-4, 1-4, 0-4) against Liverpool.

Despite the praise lavished on the Hammers, it will be a surprise if the Reds do not pick up all three points on their travels, with the German backing his players to handle any "nervous moments" as the season enters squeaky-bum time.
He added: "Yes, there is pressure. There was pressure last year... There were nervous situations last year, two years ago, three years ago.
"That is part of the game of the football. People are in a little bit of doubt about this and that, I understand yes, but people understand in general.
"This club has not been champions for 29 years. So how can people sit there and watch it like (Manchester) City? I don't know how often they have been champions in the last five or six years.
"We really, the people really, desperately want it, that is how it is, they really want it (the league title). I get that and we try with all we have. But there are no guarantees. I am not a nervous person."
While Liverpool are not as short-handed as West Ham, they will not be able to call on Dejan Lovren, who has a hamstring injury.
Klopp also confirmed that fellow defender Joe Gomez, who has been out since Dec 5 with a fractured leg, will also not be returning to the fold any time before the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Bayern Munich on Feb 19 as his rehabilitation "is not exactly going how we want", with another operation likely.

Football: Diaz future in his hands not City's, says Guardiola

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Manchester City will be unable to do anything to keep highly-regarded midfielder Brahim Diaz if he decides to join Real Madrid the English champions manager Pep Guardiola said on Saturday (Dec 29).
The 19-year-old Spain Under-21 international has been in discussions over a move to the European champions, having become frustrated by a lack of first-team opportunities at the Etihad Stadium.
If the move goes through, it would be the second time in 18 months that City has lost a talented young player who has become frustrated at not playing.
Jadon Sancho left City for Borussia Dortmund in 2017, and has since gone on to make 29 Bundesliga appearances and win three full England caps.
Guardiola claimed he was not aware of how far discussions had progressed between City and Real over Diaz, but a deal is expected to go through in the coming days for a player who is out of contract at the end of the season.
"I don't have any new information on that," said Guardiola at Saturday's press conference on the eve of their match with Southampton.
"I know they are in conversation, but I don't have any new information about the situation. Today (Saturday), he trained with us.
"I was clear last week when I spoke about it. We do everything to keep them (the young players) but they decide."
Guardiola takes his City team to Southampton looking to end a disappointing run of results, with his side dropping to third place in the Premier League after losing three of their past four matches.
The City manager said he saw it as his responsibility to lead the team back to form as they attempt to catch leaders Liverpool, after the disappointment of consecutive defeats against Crystal Palace and Leicester.
"It is a big challenge for me; I have to show whether I'm good or not," he said.
"I wouldn't say I like the situation but I know it's common in football and I like to handle it.
"I will help them and assist them to help each other and we will come back who we are. We will move forward."
City have struggled in the absence of holding midfielder Fernandinho, who missed the defeats by Crystal Palace and Leicester because of injury, and who remains doubtful for the Southampton game, even though he has returned to training.
Guardiola insists he has no plans to change his mind and buy players in January, repeating a statement he made in November.
"I think the answer was clear two times," he said.
"It is still the same."
The manager said he tried to sign cover for Fernandinho before the start of the season, but was thwarted because his targets could not be persuaded to come to the club.
"We tried in the summer but the players don't want to come. What can we do?
"We wait until the end of the window but it didn't happen."
