Football: Man United game is 'like a final', says Chelsea's Pedro

LONDON (Reuters) - Chelsea's crucial Premier League clash at Manchester United on Sunday (April 28) is "like a final" for the London club as both sides seek a top-four Premier League finish, winger Pedro has said.
Chelsea are currently fourth in the standings with 67 points, three points ahead of Manchester United.
With Arsenal separating the two clubs in fifth place with 66 points, neither side can afford to drop points with three league games to go.
"It is like a final for us," Pedro told Sky Sports. "It is so important to reach the top four. We need to win in Manchester but we know it is difficult to play there.
"They have very good players and are a very good team.
"Maybe they are not in a very good moment, or in very good form, but we need to fight together to win this game."
However, Chelsea are yet to win away at a top six club this season. They have lost four games, conceding 13 goals and scoring only one, and face a United side hurting from a 2-0 midweek humbling at the hands of neighbours Manchester City.

Maurizio Sarri's side were also handed a blow when impressive young winger Callum Hudson-Odoi ruptured his Achilles in the 2-2 draw with Burnley, prematurely ending his season.
But Pedro said he was ready to step up.
"It's a pity for us. He (Hudson-Odoi) is a very good young player for us and is important for us," Pedro said.
"I can only hope that he gets well as soon as possible. Now we have to continue without him until the end in these five games.
"I feel good. I might not start on Sunday but the result is the most important thing. I'm so focused on this game, I want to win. It's the only possible result for us."

They'll need every part of the side to be in form to emerge with two positive results and Mane can be key to any success thanks to being on top of his own game, says the boss. Indeed, Klopp

Football: Juventus not just Ronaldo, says Atletico coach Simeone

TURIN, ITALY (AFP) - Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone warned on Monday (March 11) that there was more to Juventus than striker Cristiano Ronaldo as the Spanish side look to "seize their opportunity" in Turin and maintain their push for a first Champions League title.
Simeone's side take a 2-0 lead into the second leg of their last 16 clash with Juve at the Allianz Stadium on Tuesday (March 12), and are clear favourites to make the quarter-finals at the expense of a team who signed Ronaldo from Real Madrid last summer with the goal of winning the Champions League for the first time since 1996.
"You can't just talk about Ronaldo, Juventus are a great team with top players who are used to fighting important battles and are very strong in defence," said Simeone, who insisted there were no favourites despite his team's clear advantage.
"These are two different matches, the first leg and second leg. We'll have to seize all the opportunities and do our best, we'll have less space than in the first leg.
"These are two strong teams, one will go through and the other won't. It's hard to talk about there being favourites." Atletico have injury worries but Simeone said central defender Diego Godin was fit to play.
"Godin is fine, he'll train today and I expect him to play tomorrow. I'll make do with what I have at my disposal," he said.
Reigning European champions Real Madrid have already crashed out of the competition, with Zinedine Zidane returning as coach of the stumbling Spanish giants.
But Simeone refused to comment on the Frenchman's return to the Santiago Bernabeu just over nine months after he resigned.
"With all the respect I have for him I don't think its right to talk about Zidane before a match between Atletico and Juventus," said the former Argentina midfielder, who played for Juve's hated rivals Inter Milan during his six-year spell as a player in Italy.
Midfielder Koke warned they were ready for a "battle" with Juventus, who are dominant in Italy but have struggled to turn domestic success into European glory.
"Anything could happen in the Champions League, a lot will depend on how we start the game," the Spain international said.
"They will certainly attack in every possible way, we're ready to do battle.
"We know that we are facing a great team. We played very well at the Wanda Metropolitano and come here convinced we can put in a similar performance, but have to give our all."

OLOMOUC, CZECH REPUBLIC (REUTERS) - Czech Republic eased to a 3-0 win over Montenegro helped by an own goal and a penalty in the second half on Monday (June 10) as they claimed a second consecutive win in Euro 2020 qualifying.
The victory moved the Czechs level on six points with Group A leaders England, who beat them 5-0 at Wembley in their opening match and have a game in hand having played only twice.
The Czechs opened the scoring against Montenegro in the 18th minute when Jakub Jankto slammed a left-foot volley into the net from a tight angle after Pavel Kaderabek sent over a deep cross.
Their lead was doubled just after the break when Boris Kopitovic deflected Patrik Schick's cross into his own goal after the forward had rounded a defender.
Schick got the third with a penalty in the 82nd which he smashed home after being sent sprawling in the area.
Montenegro - who fired Serbian coach Ljubisa Tumbakovic on Saturday (June 8)after he pulled out of Friday's qualifier against Kosovo which they drew 1-1 - have two points along with Bulgaria, who conceded an added-time goal in a 3-2 home defeat by the Kosovans, who are third with five points.

Football: Goal hero Kompany makes good on promise as Man City go top again

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany said he had lived up to a vow to "one-day" score a long-range goal after his wonder strike secured a 1-0 win at home to Leicester that left the champions in charge of the destiny of the Premier League title with a match to play.
City were heading for a frustrating evening at the Etihad Stadium on Monday until Kompany let fly with a 25-yard shot into the top corner 20 minutes from time - the centre-back's first City goal from outside the box.
Victory saw City go top by a point from Liverpool heading into Sunday's last round of league matches.
"I hadn't scored this season but I always feel in big moments that I'm going to do something, I don't know if it's a header or what," Kompany told Sky Sports.
"Today was a little bit of frustration, everyone was saying 'don't shoot, don't shoot' and I could really hear it; I thought hold on a second, I've not come this far in my career for young players to tell me if I can take a shot, and I just had a go!" Kompany insisted: "I've scored goals like that in training!
"It's 15 years I've been in top-level football, midfielders telling me 'don't shoot, play the ball wide' and every time they miss, for 15 years I've been saying 'I promise you, one day I'm going to have a shot from outside the box and I'm going to score a goal and you're going to be really happy with that one'."

'Big believer'

City manager Pep Guardiola admitted he too was among those who didn't want Kompany to let fly from distance.
"Don't shoot! Pass the ball, pass the ball!," said Guardiola when asked about his thoughts as Kompany took aim.
"Honestly, I wasn't too confident but football is mad for that. The artists are the players, they have to decide things in a fraction of a second and what's important isn't the goal, it's him shooting while believing he was going to score.
"He's a big believer and that helped us to win the game," the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss added.
"Now we don't have games every three days, he's not young and to be consistent is difficult for him every three days, but when we have a game once every week, he's an incredible player." City will be assured of retaining the title if their result away to Brighton is equal or better to what Liverpool achieve against Wolves at Anfield on Sunday.
However, a win for Liverpool and anything less for City would see the Reds secure their maiden English championship since they last won the old First Division title in 1990.
And Kompany warned: "It's a big goal, we've not achieved anything but it was an important win against a very, very strong team."
But Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who made several fine saves on Monday, said: "City are a top-class side, and we have lost to the potential champions.
"I can't see them losing their next game."

Football: Barca want to seal La Liga title before Champions League tie with Liverpool

MADRID (REUTERS) - Barcelona are fully focused on winning La Liga and if possible want to wrap up the title before next week's Champions League semi-final clash with Liverpool, coach Ernesto Valverde said on Monday (April 22).
The Catalans, who are on 77 points and are nine ahead of second-placed Atletico Madrid, travel to Alaves on Tuesday.
If they beat Alaves and Atletico Madrid fail to win against fifth-placed Valencia 24 hours later, then Valverde's side will be crowned champions on Wednesday.
"A lot of people ask me if we want to get La Liga boxed off and that's what anyone would want to do," Valverde told a news conference.
"We want to win La Liga, whenever that may be and we'll see if we can get that done.
"It looks easy on paper: a win here, a draw there, we win it on a certain day but we have a lot of good teams to face with a lot to play for and things aren't easy."
Valverde is likely to give winger Ousmane Dembele a run out as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury suffered last month.
"He's not at 100 per cent. He will be getting his rhythm (back) little by little; he brings us a lot of speed and that will come in useful against sides who want to press high as we can use him in the spaces that leaves."
The 55-year-old was curt when asked whether Dembele would replace Philippe Coutinho in the pecking order now that the Frenchman was back from injury.
"Here nobody has gone in front of anybody. Everyone we have here is a great player and while we might have had situations where one has replaced the other one, that kind of thing happens in all clubs," he said.
"Each player is looking for his place and to be in the best shape they can be. In this case, Dembele has played, or Coutinho has played. They can even play together."
Valverde will be without long-term absentee Rafinha for the trip to the Basque country, while Thomas Vermaelen and Samuel Umtiti remain doubts.
Alaves, who are eighth on 46 points, will be without Jonathan Calleri (suspended) and injured trio Guillermo Maripan, Takashi Inui and Jorge Burgui.

Football: Ronaldo and Juventus will avoid US amid rape investigation

NEW YORK (NYTIMES) - Organisers of a high-profile summer tournament for world soccer's biggest club teams have decided to keep Juventus and its star Cristiano Ronaldo away from the United States this year, eliminating the risk of the Portuguese star's being detained by authorities as part of a rape investigation in Las Vegas.
While the bulk of the games in the tournament, the International Champions Cup, will take place in the United States as usual, Juventus' games will be a part of the Asian version of the annual event.
Juventus will be joined there - most likely in China and Singapore - by Premier League teams Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.
Ronaldo, a five-time world player of the year, is in his first season in Italy's top league after Juventus paid more than US$114 million (S$154 million) to acquire him from Real Madrid last July.
Only months after his transfer, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said it had reopened an investigation into accusations by an American woman, Kathryn Mayorga, who said Ronaldo raped her in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2009 and later paid her US$375,000 for her silence.
Ronaldo and his lawyers repeatedly denied the rape accusation when it emerged in September; Ronaldo labelled it "fake news" in a video posted on one of his social media accounts, and at one point his lawyers threatened to sue the German newsmagazine that was the first to publish Mayorga's accusations.
Juventus stood behind its star, too, expressing appreciation for his "great professionalism and dedication" and saying Mayorga's accusations "do not change this opinion."

Juventus has a multiyear agreement to play in the International Champions Cup, which is organised by New York-based Relevent Sports.
Ronaldo's legal troubles played a role in shaping plans for Juventus' participation, according to people familiar with this summer's schedule, which will be released next week.
A spokesman for Juventus, which is on course to win an eighth straight Italian league championship, said "going east" to Asia was normal after spending recent preseasons in the United States.
While preseason tours are not seen as serious competition, they are vital for teams' preparations before the new season, and Juventus would have drawn unwanted scrutiny had it travelled to the US without Ronaldo, its star attraction.
The case against Ronaldo resurfaced after German magazine Der Spiegel said it had obtained confidential documents related to the case, and the purported payment by Ronaldo to settle it, from whistleblower platform Football Leaks.
Around the same time, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said it had reopened its investigation into the rape accusation, following up on information it said had been provided by the victim.
Ronaldo, now 33, was a star at England's Manchester United when he met Mayorga, now 35, at a Las Vegas nightclub in 2009, just before his record-breaking transfer to Real Madrid. He invited her and others to his suite in the early hours of June 13, 2009, she said, where she says he sexually assaulted her.
A number of the documents Mayorga's lawyers say support her claim were published by Der Spiegel, which also published a lengthy interview with Mayorga. Ronaldo's lawyers have questioned the authenticity of some of the documents published by Der Spiegel but have not denied that Ronaldo and Mayorga had a sexual encounter, which they contend was consensual.
According to her lawsuit, Mayorga reported being assaulted to police later that day and underwent a medical examination, during which evidence was collected in what is sometimes known as a rape kit.
Las Vegas police have acknowledged that Mayorga filed a report and was examined, but police said she did not name her attacker at the time.
The case was reopened at Mayorga's request in September.

Football: Klopp charged by FA over referee comments in West Ham draw

LONDON (REUTERS) - Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp was charged by the English Football Association (FA) on Wednesday (Feb 13) over comments he made about the referee after his side's 1-1 draw with West Ham United in the Premier League on Feb 4.
The German manager said referee Kevin Friend's performance was affected by the decision to allow Sadio Mane's opening goal, which should have been ruled out for offside.
The FA said Klopp had been charged as the comments "questioned the integrity of the referee and/or implied bias".
West Ham equalised through Michail Antonio's goal before the interval but Klopp said Friend "did not want to open the gap any more" in the second half.
"As a human being, if I know I have made a big mistake in the first half, I don't want to open the gap any more," Klopp said after the match at the London Stadium.
"Referees are obviously human beings, and I understand that, but I didn't during the game because I had no clue that our goal was offside."
Klopp has until 1800 GMT on Monday (2am on Tuesday, Singapore time) to respond to the charge.

Football: Kane starts for Tottenham in Champions League final

MADRID (AFP) - Harry Kane returned from almost two months out with injury to start for Tottenham in the Champions League final against Liverpool on Saturday (June 1).
Kane has not played since damaging ankle ligaments in the first leg of the quarter-finals against Manchester City on April 9 but gave Spurs a major boost by being passed fit in Madrid.
“I think we believed and we felt that in the last few weeks he was ready to compete,” coach Mauricio Pochettino told BT Sport before kick-off.
“We give him time to feel that emotion and determination, and yesterday we confirmed that he was ready.”
Coach Mauricio Pochettino dropped Lucas Moura to make room for Kane, despite Moura scoring an incredible hat-trick as Tottenham came back to knock out Ajax in the semis.
Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min were selected behind Kane in attacking midfield.
Liverpool's own centre forward Roberto Firmino also made it into Jurgen Klopp's starting line-up at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Firmino had missed Liverpool's last three games with a groin injury, with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane completing the front three.
James Milner dropped to the bench, as Klopp picked a midfield trio of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Georginio Wijnaldum, who scored twice in Liverpool's stunning semi-final fightback against Barcelona.
Starting line-ups for the Champions League final between Liverpool and Tottenham at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday (kick-off 1900 GMT):

Football: Former England star Paul Gascoigne faces assault trial for kissing incident

LONDON (AFP) - Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne will stand trial for sexual assault in October after allegedly kissing a woman without consent on a train, a judge ruled on Tuesday (Jan 8).
The 51-year-old ex-Tottenham and Lazio player was arrested on a train between York and Newcastle in August.
He appeared at Teesside Crown Court in Middlesbrough in north-east England to formally enter a not guilty plea, the Press Association news agency reported.
His lawyer Michelle Heeley told the court that a number of character witnesses will give evidence "about his propensity to kiss people in a non-sexual manner".
Gascoigne, who has struggled with alcoholism since he retired from top-flight football, wore a blue suit and an open-neck shirt and spoke out during the hearing.
"I'm worried to bits. I'm scared," Gascoigne told judge Simon Bourne-Arton, who granted him unconditional bail.
When told he would have to turn up for the trial, Gascoigne said: "I cannot wait. I have done nothing wrong".
The trial on one charge of "sexual assault by touching" is set to be held on Oct 14.
Gascoigne - known as "Gazza" - made his name with Newcastle before going on to play for Tottenham, Italian giants Lazio and several other teams including Rangers.

The midfielder, widely regarded as one of the most talented players of his generation, was also a key member of the England side that reached the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup in Italy. He won 57 caps in total.
Gascoigne was one of the first big-name footballers to arrive in China when he made the shock decision to be a player-coach of second division Gansu Tianma in 2003 but he lasted just a handful of games.
In an interview published on Tottenham's website last year, he said: "Sometimes when I look back and people say to me 'do you regret anything in your career'?
"Perhaps I left Spurs too early. I loved it there. The players, the staff, everyone was class and the team spirit was phenomenal, absolute class. We had a great team."

Handsome payouts for Mourinho - three sacks full

LONDON • Another three-year cycle has ended with yet another Jose Mourinho sacking and a handsome payout.
The Portuguese manager's reign at Manchester United - despite signing an improved deal to 2020 just 11 months ago - was cut short last Tuesday after the English Premier League football club's worst start to a season in 28 years.
His third firing - twice with Chelsea - was also partly triggered by a much-publicised breakdown in the relationship he had with several United players, notably Paul Pogba, Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial and Antonio Valencia.
The "Special One" has long had a history of falling out with those under his charge - from Iker Casillas at Real Madrid to Adrian Mutu and Mateja Kezman during his first Chelsea spell, and Juan Mata when he was reappointed.
Mourinho leaves Old Trafford with his reputation as one of football's most divisive characters even more pronounced, but he still remains a tempting proposition for any club willing to eschew aesthetics for short-term success.
However, there is a price to pay for appointing Mourinho as his past teams can attest to - not only the dressing room rifts and trail of bruised egos, but also the huge compensation figures he will command should things not work out.
According to The Daily Mail, United owe him £22.5 million (S$39 million) as the club are still in the running for the Champions League, entitling him to a 25 per cent bonus on top of his basic salary package of £18 million.

  • $86.8m

Jose Mourinho's reported sum of payouts (£50 million) from his sackings at Chelsea (twice) and Manchester United.

The 55-year-old reportedly pocketed £18 million from Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich when he experienced his first dismissal in September 2007 after a series of rows with the Russian, despite leading the club to six trophies in three years at Stamford Bridge.
While the pair patched things up, leading to his re-hiring by the Blues in the summer of 2013, The Mirror claimed Mourinho received another £9.5 million payoff after a run of nine losses in 16 Premier League games left his position untenable on Dec 17, 2015.
The only club where Mourinho has not been richly rewarded despite things ending on a sour note has been Real. Club president Florentino Perez insisted in May 2013 that there was "no compensation" for him. The LaLiga giants then announced they had reached a "mutual agreement" to end their three-year relationship at the end of the term.

Football: Sven cancels dinner as China beat 'Street Dogs' 3-0 at Asian Cup

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Sour Swede Sven-Goran Eriksson scrapped dinner plans with old foe Marcello Lippi after China thrashed his Philippines side 3-0 on Friday (Jan 11) to reach the last 16 of the Asian Cup.
China's star striker Wu Lei fired a brilliant double against the Filipino "Street Dogs" in Abu Dhabi as Lippi emerged victorious in a heavyweight coaching clash.
As is custom between the two elder statesmen of the game, the loser buys the other dinner, washed down with a vintage bottle of wine.
But Eriksson had little stomach for the old pals' act when the septuagenarians embraced after the match.
"No, no dinner plans," snapped the former England manager.
"I was not in a very good mood for a long discussion. I just wished (Lippi) good luck for the future."
"We forgot about Wu Lei - twice," grimaced Eriksson, who previously coached the match-winner at Chinese club Shanghai SIPG.
"If you do that he will punish you and he did with two great goals. We paid a heavy price but we are not home yet. We still have hope - but small hope, probably."
China, runners-up in 1984 and 2004, top Group C with a perfect six points from two games - ahead of South Korea on goal difference - after beating Kyrgyzstan 2-1 in their opening game.
But they looked far sharper against the Philippines, like the former Soviet republic also appearing in their first Asian Cup.
"I'm very proud of my players," said Lippi, who led his native Italy to World Cup victory in 2006.
"They were aggressive, focused and showed a lot of quality. If we can continue to play like that we have nothing to fear from any team at this Asian Cup."

WU MAGIC

Lippi's side should have led after 32 minutes when Wu Xi headed wastefully wide from point-blank range.
But Wu Lei provided the spark five minutes before half-time, turning on the edge of the box and whipping a right-foot shot into the far corner.
His second was even better as he swivelled to slam a Hao Junmin free kick past goalkeeper Michael Falkesgaard on the volley after 66 minutes to effectively finish the tie.
Substitute Yu Dabao added a third 10 minutes from time for China, who are looking to improve on their quarter-final finish in Australia four years ago.
Lippi waxed lyrical about the prolific Wu Lei, China's most coveted player and Shanghai's record goalscorer, who has been linked with a move to English Premier League side Wolves.
"He looked very sharp and scored two goals of fantastic quality," said the Italian.
"But we are used to seeing that quality from him. It is no wonder teams in Europe are interested in him."
Pulverised 8-1 the last time the teams met in 2017, the Philippines gave China more of a fight this time, having lost 1-0 to South Korea earlier this week.
Kevin Ingreso forced a fingertip save from China goalkeeper Yan Junling in first-half stoppage time, but Eriksson's players faded badly after the break.
South Korea, runners-up in 2015, beat Kyrgyzstan 1-0 in a late kickoff in Al Ain to advance to the knockout stage.

Football: Nervy wait for Liverpool and Manchester City fans as Premier League climax approaches

Football: Nervy wait for Liverpool and Manchester City fans as Premier League climax approaches

SINGAPORE - Aaron Kok has been to Anfield 16 times but the 17th time might be the most memorable of them all.
Or not.
The travel agency owner , who regularly organises trips to Liverpool's home ground, is bringing 45 other fellow Reds fans for the final game of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday (May 12).
The group will join thousands of supporters on Merseyside hoping to will Liverpool to their first top-flight title since 1990.
Kok, who leaves on Saturday (May 11), said: "I have a few friends who are already there and they've said there's a very festive mood there because everyone has been buzzing from the Champions League win."
"It's a dream for every fan to visit Anfield, to be able to go to the grounds and watch the team that they support. It will be a crazy day and everyone will be enjoying themselves with the atmosphere in Liverpool."
But with the odds stacked against them, Kok, 42, admitted the title might be out of Liverpool's hands.

"As long as we try our best, if Manchester City wins it's not within our control. We've already done brilliantly this season."
Fellow Reds fan and estate planner S.Kavindran, 36, is also holding on to that dream.
"One thing about Liverpool that's very different from other football clubs is that the whole Anfield vibe is not just a football ground, it's a holy ground.
"In the last few games we've been scoring late to win so I'm hopeful that we'll be able to pull it off again.
"Even if we fall short, we have to give it to the team. The way that they played the whole season, none of the other teams gave City a fight like we did."
Knowing a win at Brighton will secure City back-to-back Premier League titles, their fans here are largely optimistic.
Civil servant and Manchester City Singapore Supporters committee member Haizam Shah, 34, noted Brighton's improved recent form (1-1 draws against Newcastle and Arsenal) but believes the Citizens will not falter at the final hurdle.
He said: "Brighton are already safe from relegation, they have nothing to play for. But Liverpool are playing Wolves who are doing quite well. I won't say Brighton are pushovers but I'm confident in my team, that's for sure."
Jess Chen, who is self employed, has been supporting the Sky Blues since 1995. The 37-year-old said: "It's unbelievable seeing them transform from a team fighting relegation to where we are today. We're enjoying every moment and not taking anything for granted.
"Even if we don't win, we can't really blame anyone because the team has surpassed all expectations. They got maximum points since their last defeat (to Newcastle United in January) so you really can't ask for more.
"They've had several challenging tests in the final period in terms of quality of opponents and pressure from Liverpool. The toughest part is already past them so now it's just about crossing the line and finishing strong."

Football: Inter Milan fan dies after clashes at Napoli game

ROME (AFP) - An Inter Milan supporter died on Thursday morning (Dec 27) after being hit by a vehicle during clashes with Napoli fans on Wednesday before the Serie A match between the two teams at the San Siro.
Milan police chief Marcello Cadorna told journalists that the incident happened after around 100 Inter fans attacked Napoli supporters' minibuses with chains and hammers.
Cadorna, himself a former Serie A referee, said that four Napoli fans were injured in the "despicable and absolutely impossible to prevent" attack.
In the ensuing confusion, Inter fan Daniele Belardinelli, 35, was hit by a vehicle, likely a dark SUV and not one of the Napoli minibuses, according to mobile phone footage of the incident, Cadorna said.
Inter fans carried Belardinelli to a nearby hospital where he died of his injuries despite being operated on.
"You can't die for a football game," said far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, adding that he would summon fan organisations for talks in January.
Police arrested three Inter fans over the violence, Cadorna said.
Inter Milan won the match 1-0, as Napoli had two players sent off late on.
The game was marred by racist chanting towards Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, with the away side asking for the match to be halted after the 27-year-old Senegalese international was repeatedly subjected to monkey noises.
The Mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, made a public apology on Thursday, describing the racist chanting as a "shameful act" and asking Koulibaly's forgiveness.

Football: New signing Fabregas hands Monaco first win in seven French league games

PARIS (REUTERS) - Cesc Fabregas netted his first goal with Monaco to give the struggling principality side their first French Ligue 1 win in seven matches as they beat visiting Toulouse 2-1 on Saturday (Feb 2).
The Spanish midfielder, who joined from Chelsea last month, fired home in the second half to help Monaco move from 19th to 18th in the standings and claim their first victory at home in the league.
They have 18 points from 23 games and are level on points with 17th-placed Caen, who have a game in hand.
In coach Leonardo Jardim's second game since he returned to the bench after Thierry Henry was sacked last week, Monaco showed some steel.
"I have congratulated the players for the first three points of this mini-league. Now we have to prepare for the next game," said Jardim.
"The last minutes were difficult. Even if we manage to forget the past, we hadn't won in a long time and it can get a little scary."
Monaco opened the scoring after 15 minutes when Aleksandr Golovin latched on to a Gelson Martins cross, only for Christopher Jullien to level five minutes later from close range.
The 31-year-old Fabregas, however, restored the advantage with a right-footed striker from the spot that went under the bar in the 62nd minute.
In Jardim's first game in charge earlier this week, Monaco were knocked out of the League Cup semi-finals by Guingamp on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
Marseille dropped to 10th on 31 points after they lost 2-1 at Reims, with Clinton Njie's last-gasp goal being too little, too late after Tristan Dingome and Suk Hyun-jun had put the hosts in a comfortable position.

Real top football's rich list, United down to third
LONDON • European champions Real Madrid displaced Manchester United as the world's highest-earning football club after the Premier League side's underperformance on the pitch in recent seasons ate into their dominance off it.
United slumped to third place, below both Real and Barcelona based on revenue for the 2017-18 season, financial services firm Deloitte said in its annual Football Money League yesterday.
The Red Devils have been the wealthiest club for two of the past three years and eight times in the last two decades.
Clubs in the Premier League - which has the highest broadcast revenue - took six of the top-10 spots, but LaLiga's two biggest teams prevailed thanks to their Champions League prowess and supremacy at home.
The changing of the guard in football's financial list mirrors the contrasting on-field fortunes of United and Real of late. Santiago Solari's men have won the Champions League for the last three seasons while, in the same period, United have failed to get past the last 16.
Their annual revenue was also hit by a slump in the British pound, growing only 1.5 per cent to £590 million (S$1 billion). Real, on the other hand, surged 11 per cent to €751 million (S$1.1 billion).
A spokesman for United said the club were "not too concerned" about financial league tables from year to year as the team remain a top global sports brand by any measure.
Part of their confidence lies in the fact that the Premier League still dominates the money pile.

There are a further five English top-flight teams in the top 10, including Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal, with even relegation-threatened Newcastle making the top-20 cut despite going trophyless since 1969.
Tottenham, who are waiting to move into a 62,000-capacity stadium, re-entered the top 10 for the first time since the 2006-07 term.
Italian Serie A champions Juventus, meanwhile, dropped out of the top 10 for the first time since the 2010-11 season despite signing former Real talisman Cristiano Ronaldo in the close season.
Weaker broadcast revenue in Italy relative to other big European leagues means Juventus have to do better than their rivals in the Champions League to bridge the gap.
Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, who are backed by wealthy Middle East owners, are in fifth and sixth place.
Both are, however, facing claims they have breached the Financial Fair Play regulations, but City and PSG have denied any wrongdoing.

Football: Japan's golden oldie 'King Kazu' Miura renews J-League contract before 52nd birthday

TOKYO (AFP) - Former Japan striker Kazuyoshi Miura, who turns 52 next month, has extended his record as the J-League's oldest player after renewing his contract with Yokohama FC, the club said.
The veteran footballer, admiringly nicknamed "King Kazu" for his spirited on-field style, will kick off his 34th career season this year, the second division club announced on Friday (Jan 11).
"I thank fans for supporting me all the time," Miura said in a brief statement.
"I want to work out at full stretch every day... and play as many games as possible by making every minute count."
In 2017, Miura surpassed football's previous professional longevity record and became the oldest player to score a competitive goal in a professional match. Both records were previously held by English legend Stanley Matthews.
Last year he played nine games for Yokohama but failed to score.
Miura left Japan for Brazil in 1982 and signed a contract with Santos FC in 1986 to make his professional debut.
He made his Japan debut in 1990 and pushed for the country's first ever World Cup appearance in 1998 but failed to join the final squad for France despite scoring 55 goals in 89 games for the national side.
He was one of the stars of the professional J-League at its 1993 launch before joining Italy's Genoa on loan the following year.
Miura, who has played for Yokohama since 2005, has said he wants to play on until he turns 60.
Yokohama lost in the first division play-offs last year. Their 2019 season kicks off on February 24.
